The article “15 Critical Facts Everyone Should Know About Summer Learning Loss”, made me rethink about how I spend my summers. Over the summer, school is the last thing on many students minds. The schools did start up summer work. Summer reading projects are not put in place at Mount Carmel Area and have been for the past couple of years.
Summer is not only about students losing the knowledge they gained during the school year, but it's also about the care the school gives them diminished. Many children are not taken care of at home. Many students come to school just for the food because they are not fed at home. School is also a safe warm place in the winter and a safe cool place when it gets warm for these students.
Another reason why summer

They may score less due to not having the knowledge fresh in their minds. Over the summer, students tend to not want to think about school. So, it is not a question why they score less coming back from summer vacation.
Many students get in trouble when there is no authority to control their actions. During the school year, most students are more focused on school work then going to parties and doing illegal things. By having schoolwork to do, students will have other things to take care of, other than partying.
My opinion would be on both ends of the spectrum. I believe students should still learn over the summer. Some students do. For example, most AP classes has work over the summer. That keeps those teens active in learning, while still receiving a break. I as a student do like the summer break. It allows me to relax and take my own time to think about things and not worry about school work. I feel like students get tired of school and begin to slack in their school work. Seniors call it “senior sliding”, but I believe every student has that towards the end of the year. If a student goes to school year round, it would be good for the student to receive fresh information, but they may be tired of going to

On average, students lose about 2.6 months worth of grade level equivalency in mathematical computation skills during their summer break. With many schools struggling to meet state and federal standards in math, these kinds of losses aren't doing anything to help matters”, I agree on the idea how math is loss over the summer. Math is a difficult subject for many students. Most students have trouble remembering the math they learned last week, let alone math from 2 months ago. Many classes grow off of the ideas learned in the previous class. Many students have a difficult time trying to remember the material they were taught the last school
Nonetheless, there is some resistance to schools converting to a year-round calendar. Most of that opposition comes from the reduction in intersession length, and some students and/or parents don 't like the idea of year-round education from the start. This gives families a reason to voice their opposition when both the parents and child 's schedules do not line up with one another. This usually affects households that wish to take long vacations over the course of a summer. Parents, in some cases, may oppose this change because of child care needs. Child care raises opposition since there is a shift in the school year calendar. Parents may not be able to find nannies or babysitters. In addition, parents will have to check for or maybe even search for new or different childcare services. To add, parents with multiple children may have to worry about their children being put
Another significant reason is summer vacation needs to be longer. The primary reason for this is children need time to wind down and relax before they have to go back to school. For instance, during the summer children relax and prepare for school, if they...
First, the pros of year round schooling can include; effects on absence and burnout rates, effects on budget, more frequent breaks, and also a big effect on academic achievement. The way that year round schooling works to reduce burnout and also reduce absences is that by having more frequent breaks; students are less likely to want to skip class. This is definitely noticeable after spring break where most schools don’t have any days off until the end of the year that is usually more than 2 months straight. In other words the “April, May, June stretch”. Year round schooling will also help students with their academics as well because with the way the schedule is set up, students do not ha...
...on what they have learned by attending more days in school but not getting burned out on a traditional nine month school schedule. A few short breaks allows the mind to rest but not forget everything they have worked hard to achieve educational greatness. American society will achieve great things if the education system takes a step in all schools operating on a year round calendar.
18 Nov. 2011. Cooper, Harris. Interview. The. “More Than a Hunch: Kids Lose Learning Skills Over the Summer” months.”
The summertime is when kids play outside and do whatever they want. Some kids even go to day care or their friends’ house to do something different, “Many children go to summer camps where they learn many of important skills not covered in school” (Cooper 3). Doing work in the summer that does not interest them will make kids despise summer. It also will not let the kids do want they want to do in peace, because they will worry about the huge assignment they still have to finish, “…the backbreaking obligation to read Charles Dickens blighted June, ravaged July obliterated August” (Queenan,1). Some might argue that the long summer will make the children forget what they learned, but if the students cannot relearn what they already knew in a month or less, that means that they are not being taught correctly. In general, summer reading makes a students' summer into more school time, which is not helpful to them.
In conclusion, the advantages of year-round schooling are beneficial to all. If all schools did change to year round schooling, I believe we would be able to teach all the students without having to reteach skills from previous years, it could be done during intersessions. Year-round schooling benefits both the teachers and students. Teachers are able to reflect on their teachings and adjust in time before the next session would begin. The students would feel positive about themselves in school. With this change, we may even be able to accomplish No Child Left Behind.
According to a report from the National Summer Learning Association, it’s common practice for teachers to dedicate at least one month to re-teaching material students have forgotten over the summer[3]. Reviewing material is one thing; completely re-teaching it is quite another. Instead of continuing the educational momentum of the previous school year, teachers and students lose at least four weeks of valuable instruction time in order to relearn the same material, but beyond this - summer slide can affect students on an individual level.
For years, parents and educators have debated the advantages and disadvantages of the traditional school calendar, which has long summer vacations for all students. The longer you are away from school, the more you lose what you learned in the previous year. Studies have shown that children who know English as a second language benefit the most from year-round education because during the long summer break, they may not hear English for several months. Long summer breaks is a problem for traditional schools and the solution is to substitute traditional schools for year-round schools.
Us kids go through a lot during summer we focus on many things like work, finding extra curricular activities to do during the summer and trying to help our parents around the house. In her essay “School’s Out for Summer”, she states how if some parents can’t schedule these activities they set their children in front of a T.V. which shows that us kids don’t like to go outside during the summer when school’s out. Her purpose for writing this was to show us how our parents have to deal with us the whole summer when school’s out and we don’t want to do anything because we want to sit in the house and do nothing all summer long which can lead us to forget everything we wanted to do over the summer when we go back to school. During her essay she gives some details on world hunger in many small cities that rarely don’t have a school kids go to learn.
The summer vacation students on a traditional schedule receive could be very beneficial since summer gives time for the students to attend camps or other activities that would allow them to learn. The camp may not be like the learning in school, but students would be able to get a different style of education while having fun. Lynn-nore Chittom and Jeff Klassen, two authors who wrote about year-round vs. traditional schooling say,
Should school be year round? Well, I say yes because our young people will get done with High School faster. And if school was year round, students will not have a chance to get in a lot of trouble and they will not be able to join a gang or have time to hang on a block because they will not have a long summer break. Somebody needs to bring this problem to the school board to see if they will make the change to save many students’ lives by keeping them off the streets and keeping them in school all year long. If the children were in school longer, they will most likely turn out better, but it’s up to the people of communities to push kids through school. I believe parents need to stand up for their kids’ rights to help them have a better future by helping to make school last all year.
The first reason why year round schooling wouldn’t be a good idea is because of focusing for long periods of times for some students. First of all, many kids with disabilities or elementary school would have a hard time focusing that long of a time without their traditional three month summer break. Second, the more breaks students have might make it harder to focus before and after breaks. Before breaks many kids would be excited to
This could get very dangerous and children could stay out of harm by not being at home alone for long periods of time. One last reason that I believe year-round school can be beneficial to students is to help relieve the stress that students get during school.
Staying with a traditional school year and keeping the 3 month summer allows kids to recover from the stress of the school year and fully relax for the upcoming year. More frequent, shorter breaks would be nice, but that would require that I go to school during some of the summertime when I would normally be decompressing and having fun with my friends and family. Additionally, requiring schools to be open during summer months would cost the schools more money to cool the buildings due to the heat. Also, if the schools stayed open all year due to overcrowding, they wouldn't recover those expenses when the school was closed because it wouldn't ever be closed.
