Is Summer Homework Beneficial Summer is the time when kids get out of school and have nothing to do for two months, but would it be better if there was homework during to summer to keep the kids sharp and ready for the next year of school? Many studies have gone into this summer homework plan and quite a few have come back saying the benefits are questionable. Then on the other hand your kids have something to do instead of watching T.V. all day or playing video games and not even seeing the outside for about a week or two at times. This topic is very heated over and many believe that if their kids don’t have summer homework their kid’s brain with turn into mush and they will have bad grades; while others are happy that they do not have homework …show more content…
Homework during this time of long drive to the mountains is not going to help any because they are not going to do the homework they are given. Many students do not finish the homework that is given to them during the school year anyways adding more homework during the summer is a bad idea because it will not get done at any time. With almost everyone having in sports having camp or even practice during the summer it is harder on people who do sports then the people who sit at their house doing nothing all day. Teens will most likely find jobs to do in the summer to get some extra money and they don’t have time to work on the amount of homework they get during school because if they could work though the homework wall they would already have …show more content…
Learning new things is hard when you do not have people who know what you are trying learn and help you, that is the problem when teach have summer homework on new and hard things without giving a help to the students that need it. Families are usually away from their homes for long periods of time and have chance to work on the homework that is given to them because their parents want to get way from everything that has to deal with work and students want to get away that has to deal with anything that involves school or homework. The students have worked year around with being given a break from the homework and due dates that loomed over their heads; they need the summer away from school and everything that deals with it. Having year around school is better than having homework during the summer for the students because during the summer the students are not thing about passing the next test or I have finish this by the period; plus with no homework during the summer means more sleep for the students which need it because most of them never get more than maybe 6 hours of sleep each night because of the homework they have to
“It was a pleasure to burn,” (Bradbury 1). It was at that moment did Dylan realize that he was about to read a long and confusing novel. He was even going to take a test on the book when September arrives. Summer reading/homework is designed to help students keep their knowledge over the long, non-educative hours of summer. Teachers think that making children read in the summer helps them. In fact, the opposite happens. Not only does the work stress and bore kids to death, it decreases the want to learn, not to mention taking time away from other tasks. Thus, summer homework should not be given because it does not help students as much as they think.
For years, parents and educators have debated the advantages and disadvantages of the traditional school calendar, which has long summer vacations for all students. The longer you are away from school, the more you lose what you learned in the previous year. Studies have shown that children who know English as a second language benefit the most from year-round education because during the long summer break, they may not hear English for several months. Long summer breaks is a problem for traditional schools and the solution is to substitute traditional schools for year-round schools.
Summer is a time where people have gatherings, goof around, take vacations and spend time with their family. Many students are used to having two week winter break, one week spring break, and three months of summer break. Changing this traditional format could lead to negative effects for many students, educators, and families. A balanced school year would not have enough benefits to change schedule.
A large portion of the knowledge gained during the last school year is lost over the long idle months and must be retaught for weeks, which wastes a lot of time that could be spent learning new material. This puts students behind in that year’s curriculum, and over many summers, can add up to students being months or years behind where they would be if no learning was lost. There is a solution to this problem, however: year-round school. Year-round school provides many advantages for both students and adults over the traditional summer vacation schedule.
Likewise, summer gives time for kids to relax and prepare for the fall quarter (Chu). Kids need summer break, so they have time to recover. In addition, Chu reports that summer is needed because kids who don’t take the summer off feel less motivated. Summer break helps kids recuperate from the social pressure. Furthermore, break gives kids time to work on something and follow their dreams.
The summer vacation students on a traditional schedule receive could be very beneficial since summer gives time for the students to attend camps or other activities that would allow them to learn. The camp may not be like the learning in school, but students would be able to get a different style of education while having fun. Lynn-nore Chittom and Jeff Klassen, two authors who wrote about year-round vs. traditional schooling say,
When you think about school one of the first things that pops into people’s mind is homework. Basically if you have asked your parents or your grandparents they would say that they remember the homework load. Now we all know that homework can be beneficial but also can be very unhealthy with all of the stress that it causes. Over the years the homework load has increased because of the fact that schools think that they need to try to keep up with other countries in academics. And will doing all of this homework now be all for nothing later? The homework load has increased these past couple of years and it is causing a lot of stress on kids and overall is not helping their academics in the long run.
Every summer children lose valuable information. When school is back in session, students spend months trying to recall everything that was forgotten over those few weeks off. The arrangement of days in the academic year does play a role on how students perform in school, but not so much on the expenses. Therefore, schools should implement Year-Round education because it more affordable and is better for the children in the long run.
First, the students won’t be as bored as they are in the summer. For example, kids my age are addicted to our phones. We usually spend our time on them 24/7 and after awhile we get bored and have nothing to do. Doing work distracts students from being bored and gives them something to do. Having all year school can prevent boredom
Despite the fact that students would no longer be getting the two month duration break that they are familiar with, they still do get one. The change in the students schedule would be very beneficial allowing for the students, as well as the teachers to achieve their academic goals. I am certain that teachers can agree that it just frustrating having to re-teach material over again. Well by attending class year-round, teachers would be able to avoid re-teaching material that students have forgotten over the summer. There may be concern that a change in the curriculum or the teachers is just what is needed, but this is not what is going to change or improve student’s grades. In fact it is not that the material being taught that is too difficult; it is that the long breaks that are given cause students to forget what they were taught. These long summer breaks only disrupt a student’s education, resulting in loss of learning. School should go on year-round so that students have the chance to develop their
In conclusion, homework is a waste of time. Time that can be better spent is with family and having fun participating in extracurricular activities. Eliminating homework allows students the reward of free time and the invaluable time spent with family. Homework creates unnecessary stress and strain for parents and students alike. Also, homework allows teachers to pawn off their own teaching responsibilities to students and parents with hours of homework. Homework is not beneficial and it should be banned for students Kindergarten thru 8th grade.
These students spend a lot of time working during the summer. These high school kids need the summer break to make money. Some families that do not have enough money might need these students to help around the house, doing chores and taking care of their brother and sister and other things. If we make school all year round these students will not be able to help their families during the summer months.
Year round school will avoid students from forgetting information that they forget now over the long summer breaks. I surveyed 10 Euclid High School Students and 9 of them said that they forget the information that they learned over summer break. I also forget information over the summer.Since students forget so much of the information, teachers often find themselves re-teaching criteria from the previous year ,time that could of been spent on learning new things. Also, due to a lack of educational activities, students suffer from what is called a learning loss. On average students lose 2.6 grade
Homework isn’t that hard, it’s just too much and there isn’t a lot that has any meaning. So, I think that homework is just a piece of paper that so many people work on just to get one single grade in that barely does anything to your overall grade, it should be a voluntary/ extra credit and practice kind of thing, which basically means kids and teens should have a choice whether or not they want to do it or not and if they choose not to and fail it’s their own fault.
Although homework may seem like drudgery, the hard work that is put into homework may pay off in the long run. In the article, “Does homework really work for students?” Jacqueline Carey, the mother of seventh grade student Micah Carey, stated that “homework gives [students] a good foundation for when they move on further in school” (Johnson). Not only that, but according to Donyall Dickey, principal at Murray Hill Middle School, “if students do not acquire things in class, they will acquire them through homework” (Johnson). As we can see, homework helps and prepares us for higher grade levels while in primary school that can possibly prepare us for college.
