Dorothy was a young lady, full of spirit, living with her aunt and uncle on a farm in Kansas. She was full of energy and really loved her little dog Toto. A whirling cyclone landed her house on a witch in Oz; she started her journey to the Emerald City to ask the Wizard of Oz how to help her return to her hometown of Kansas. Dorothy was really nice and kind and she had many traditional moral values. She didn’t worry about the past events; she somehow made the best out of thing that was happening in the present. Her goal was to return home despite the difficulties she encountered in the magic city of Oz.
The wicked witch of the east was killed when Dorothy's house landed on her in the Land of Oz; she gave the munchkins many problems for years by enslaving them. After she died, the magic slippers appeared on Dorothy’s feet. Somehow Dorothy became the munchkin’s savior, and some of them thought she was a good witch. This was the beginning of Dorothy’s problems. She became a leader, but she inherited enemies in the process. The biggest and baddest enemy was the wicked witch of the West. Not knowing the power of the slippers, Dorothy wanted them off her feet immediately. She was more afraid when the Witch of the West demanded them. One of the two good witches, named Glenda, the Witch of the North greeted Dorothy upon her arrival in Oz. She was older but beautiful woman. She gave Dorothy great advice for making to the wizard, but she no power to help Dorothy make it back home to her family. She also told Dorothy to never take the glass slippers off. The munchkins told her to follow the yellow brick road and Dorothy started her journey. She met the Scarecrow along this journey. He was being roasted by crows, and they we...

...d the Wizard of Oz he told them to give them everything they wanted if they could kill the Wicked Witch of the West. After completed the task, they returned to find out he was not even a great wizard. He was only an imposter; however he helps the Scarecrow, Tin Woodman, and Lion with their wishes and tries to take Dorothy back to Kansas in a hot air balloon, but it unfortunately departs without her.
Dorothy learned on this journey that she was a great leader. She was able to help several characters reach goals that they never knew could possible to accomplish. She wasn’t just the little girl from a farm in Kansas that she thought she was. She was able to help them because she had all the things inside of her they wished to achieve; she had courage, brains, and a heart. The biggest thing I saw in Dorothy was the will power, drive, and motivation to lead.
Justice is a fair treatment among all individuals in which they deserve. One example of justice being shown in the movie is when the staff members say “We joined the catholic worker because we wanted to change the world.” The staff members were working for the poor and vulnerable people around them. They wanted to give them the basic needs they deserve as a human being. "I've been arrogant and self righteous and I’m sorry for all of that,” said Dorothy Day to her staff when they had misunderstood what she was doing with serving the poor. They thought she was doing it to be selfish and only for herself and by herself, however that is not what she intended. Dorothy is serving justice to her staff and apologizing for what has come across them. She knows they do not deserve that and age truly did not mean for that to happen. As Dorothy states this quote, it allows justice to served between not only Dorothy and her staff but also God. Lastly, another example of justice being shown throughout the live is when Dorothy states "I know God will fill me with love.” She notices the justice she deserves from God and puts her faith in him. She is talking about how her life has been lonely up until this point because she knows that with God she will feel abundant. She states that through her neighbors that she is serving, God will serve her justice and fill her with love. All of these quotes are important to the movie and without the theme of justice, Entertaining Angels would not have portrayed Dorothy Day's conversion to God to be as realistic as it truly
Hopefully, the rest of America will begin to appreciate her contributions to Hollywood. She was overlooked in Hollywood because she was shown lots of subtle and not so subtle racism which caused her to have limited opportunities in Hollywood. People need to know about Dorothy because she’s just one of the many unknown celebrities in the more cultural side of Hollywood. If the world gets to know a little bit more about other cultures unspoken heroes then we will be able to come together. Dorothy doesn't just speak for the underappreciated of the black community she speaks for all cultures unknown idols. She has proven that one day they will no longer be unknown or underappreciated that they will find their
The first major connection in The Wizard of Oz was the Scarecrow. The scarecrow was used to symbolize the farmers and their struggles in America in the 18th century (Foner, Eric 636-640). The scarecrow made of straw was vulnerable with no brain. The scarecrow had little control over the circumstances he was facing just as the farmers did in the 18th century. The western farmers had issues with overproduction and when prices fell farmers suffered ended up losing their farms (Foner, Eric
After coming back from jail and going back to Washington, she turned toward the church again, because she felt the need to connect to God again. “Certainly I felt again and again the need to go to church to kneel, to bow my head in prayer...I put myself in the atmosphere of prayer- it was an act of the will,” (85). She gradually began to realize that her mind, body, and soul can be brought into harmony through the peace she gets from practicing her faith. When Dorothy decided to become a nurse and help out victims of the war, she began to question the way of life and her thoughts began to change about religion. “I felt that it was necessary for man to worship, that he was most truly himself when engaged in the act,” (93). It was almost as if she found her true self when she went to
Frank Baums, The Wizard of Oz is arguably one of the most popular films made. Even though it was released in 1939, nearly three-quarters of a century ago, the film continues to entertain audiences and speak to them in a personal way. The question that comes to the mind when analyzing this film is: What is it about this film that gives it such timelessness? When reflecting on the film’s timeless qualities, it seems clear the plot is one of the things that enable it to maintain its relevance. Primarily, the plot of The Wizard of Oz is timeless because it is such an excellent example of the heroic journey, both in literally and cinematically. This journey of self-awareness is a metaphor for growth, which is something we all search to discover at some time in our lives.

As Bell goes through her young life she learns to play the piano, that death was not something to be afraid of, and she eventually learned how to use a camera. Granted that everyone back then did not have cameras or picture boxes as they called them, so this was a big deal. The most influential person in her life was her grandmother. ...lf-confidence. The Scarecrow was the one who believed that he had no brain even with him coming up with brilliant and clever solutions to the many problems that they faced on their journey. The tin man believed that he didn’t have a heart, but cries when bad things are brought upon the creatures they come to encounter. The lion believed that he had no courage even though he was the one brave enough to continue the journey, he always stated how brave he was and pushed forward even when the others did not want to. A famous quote from Carl L. Bankston III of Salem Press stated that "These three characters embody the classical human virtues of intelligence, caring, and courage, but their self-doubts keep them from being reduced to mere symbols of these qualities” (). This is an important quote because it highlights the self-confidence that Baum explored in his story.
Scene: This scene in the film comes just after the house has been picked up in the twister. Dorothy's house has been lifted up into the sky and suddenly dropped back down to earth in the middle of the Land of Oz. In the scene itself, Dorothy leaves her home to see that she is "Not in Kansas anymore," and finds the new and amazing world of the munchkin city in front of her. She also meets Gwendela the good witch as her journey in Oz begins.

The role gender holds in The Wonderful Wizard of Oz is not one many were familiar with at the time it was written. The Wonderful Wizard of Oz reverses the accepted gender roles of its time, women taking control, even helping men in times of need. This idea is depicted throughout the entire novel, affecting almost every character introduced. This novel essentially questions and challenges the accepted beliefs on the roles of gender in the society at that time, showing how things would be if roles were different. With this, through a description of the characters, you can see who was empowered by Baum and who held an inferior role.
