Introduction
This paper will summarize my Interview with Keith Richardson the Chief of Police of Guthrie, KY. The interview will show some of Keith’s back ground of why I picked him for my interview. It will look at the Critical analysis and reflection of the interview. It will go over the critical research and vision of the solutions used.
The Person I Interviewed and what I was Interviewing About
My Interviewee is Keith Richardson the Chief of Police which has been in law enforcement for 18 years. He has been the Guthrie Police Chief for only 7 years. He was working prior to this at Florida State Police as a patrol officer. Keith has a bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice from the University of Tennessee. I choose Keith because of the experience he has in dealing with different cultures here and in Florida plus his experience in Law Enforcement. My main focus of the interview was on what he deals with the most here in Guthrie. I wanted his thoughts on the different races, sexual orientation and the different financial classes here in Guthrie. If we had time I wanted to ask about what he thought of the different Religious preferences, Culture traditions/beliefs we have here in Guthrie.
The Interview
My Interview took place on March 15, 2014 at 10:00 am. It was at the Guthrie, KY Police Department. I confirmed the Interview on March 13, 2014 at 9:15 am. I want my interviewee to be relaxed in his environment so we can discuss the many cultures and races in our community. My interviewee and I sat in his office in a very relaxed environment for both of us. We discussed the different cultures that Guthrie, KY has in it. But I’m also part of the solution by gaining the education and understanding of these things to help others to understand them also. I have realized that change starts with understanding what it is you are want to change. When Guthrie was forced to change by segregating the schools a few people tried to fight it. The good people stood together and made sure what was right happened. The police department all over are trying to teach their officers about social diversity through educating them each year on the subject. Maybe in time we as a country will finally have it were everyone is actually equal.

The Thompson Valley Police Service is seeking to double the number of police recruits over the next three years. In an attempt to attract more applicants, the newly appointed Police Commissioner, Commissioner Jason DeVillain is proposing two key changes to the current selection process. Firstly, Commissioner DeVillain is proposing to eliminate the requirement for partial or completed tertiary education. He tells me that he treats everyone the same and that he does not have to be cautious about one culture specifically but he is exposed to many cultures everyday and he enjoys learning about the different cultures in society.
There is change trying to happen, in a rural Pacific Northwest police department (PD) that is nestled in the corner of Washington’s Olympic Peninsula. This Department serves a diverse population of 9000 people and encompasses roughly 4 mi.², as well as being surrounded by water on three of those four sides. When evaluating police departments, according to the state and national averages it is undersized for the population it serves. As one would expect it is a department with a long and rich 126-year history JCHS (2014). As well, as with the majority of all municipal departments, it has suffered its ups and downs, as well as suffering and prospering through healthy and poor administrations.

This era is where the shift from a centralized task force has gravitated to a decentralized task force, causing some friction from both the community and the officers that serve it. Police are told that they are needed to listen to the concerns for the community; however, law enforcement is still the primary goal. Another theme that was repeated quite a bit was when people try to guess another person’s personality. I remember many Asian interviewees wished that people would just ask what nationality they are as opposed to trying to guess. I can relate to this because I do not really look just one nationality. I do not believe people do this to try and be rude. Sometimes, people may not realize that what they are doing is offensive. Everyone has been guilty of this at some point in their lifetime. It was just good to be reminded that it is much nicer to ask a person their ethnicity as opposed to trying to guess.
The purpose of this assignment was to interview someone who is more than 30 years of age and who is of a different race than oneself. Research on the person being interviewed ethnic background had to be conduct, in addition to, materials covered in class and previous experiences were compiled into 7-10 open ended questions that were discussed during the interview. He was such a loving, caring and genuine guy. Tom hopes Josh is in a better place now. He carefully reminded me, “If you see a gay person or anyone being treated with disrespect or unfairly, you should stand up for what I believe in and protect that person unconditionally, maybe you can save a life.” Lastly, I ended my interview with questions regarding myself. I asked him how he thought I should behave or act in order to befriend and respect another homosexual person. He replied with a bit of sarcasm: “All you have to do is be yourself. Don’t pretend to like us “gay people” because we can sense whether you fake it or not.”
“Before new chiefs can set a path for a new vision, they must have a clear understanding of the past. A police department’s organizational culture is a deeply ingrained, personal aspect of its functioning that must not be trivialized. Years of hard work and dedication by scores of individuals went into the creation of that culture, and it must be respected. However, if the culture is no longer in step with the expectations of the community, then changes must be made. Changes for the future must be carefully crafted to achieve the desired goal without disregarding the past. There will be a summary on the research found on the process used to recruit police officers. It will also show their current hiring trends and what hiring practices they have that are successful or not successful.
