Stanley Yelnats is under a curse, one that began with his no-good-dirty-rotten-pig-stealing-great-great-grandfather and has followed generations of Yelnats. Stanley has been falsely convicted of stealing Clyde ?Sweet Feet? Livingston?s, a famous baseball player, sneakers from a homeless shelter. Now he must attend a boy?s detention center, Camp Green Lake, where bad boys dig holes all day, every day, digging holes five feet wide and five feet deep, to become good boys. There is no lake at Camp Green Lake, But there are an awful a lot of holes.
When Stanley first gets to the camp he meets Mr. Sir a man that dresses like a cowboy and has just quit smoking. Mr. Sir tells Stanley that if he wants to run he can run, but that Camp Green Lake is the only place with water for a hundred miles. Then Stanley goes to his tent, tent D, and meets his guidance counselor Mr. Pendanski who everyone else calls ?Mom?. He is introduced to his fellow inmates who are Squid, X-ray, Magnet, Armpit, Zigzag, and Zero. Stanley quickly learns that there nicknames are there only names to call them when he calls Armpit ?Theodore? and gets thrown to the ground.
The kids ask Stanley why they sent him to the camp and he tells them it was his no-good-dirty-rotten-pig-stealing-great-great-grandfather. He was unjustly convicted of stealing Clyde Livingston?s cleats from a shelter. Stanley was walking when they just fell from the sky and hit him on the head, he took them and started to run home when the police pulled him over and thought he had stole them. Stanley pleaded his case to the court but they didn?t believe and it was Camp Green Lake or jail, as any sane kid would, he picked the camp.

They continue traveling when they decide to start digging for treasure. They start digging because Stanley found lipstick that belonged to Kate Barlow and they went back to the area where they found it. Stanley and Hector find the treasure but are surrounded by yellow spotted lizards so they have no choice but to stay in the hole with out moving. A lawyer comes to Camp Green Lake looking for Stanley and the warden and the counselors star looking for them. The next day the warden finds them in the hole and tries to take the treasure but it has Stanley?s name on it. The lawyer goes to take Stanley home and he says he will only go if they can take Zero. Since the warden erased Hector?s files the camp gets shutdown and everyone goes back home.
Plot: The kids are getting on the bus to go home after another ordinary day at high school. They noticed they had a substitute bus driver. He missed a couple of stops so Bruce volunteered to show him the way. When only the five kids who live on Valley Gardens are left, the bus driver drives past their subdivision without stopping. The kids complain and he tells them to shut up. The bus pulls off to the side of the road next to a waiting car. He orders them to get off the bus and into the car. By this time the kids realized they were being kidnapped. A woman is in the car, whose name is Rita. She drives them to a cabin about two hours away. When they arrive, the kids are fed stew. On the first week at Grandma’s, a man named Shotgun Cheatman died. Everyone in the town went to the funeral because he was the well known assistant to the Mayor. The funeral was held in Grandma’s house and a creepy thing happened that night when Tom the cat crawled inside the casket. The next day, Joey, Mary Alice and Grandma left the house and walked across fields of tall grass and “cow pies aplenty” to Salt Creek to go fishing. They found an old wooden boat and Grandma rowed the boat out into the creek. While on their fishing adventure, they encountered a cottonmouth snake that fell into the boat and a party of drunken men on land dancing in their underwear.
Andy goes back to school and talks to his basketball coach about how he feels about Rob's death and how his fiends and family feel about the accident. In addition, they discuss Andy's sentence because Andy keeps punishing himself for Rob's death. Everybody at school was crying during Rob's memorial service. Grief Counselors from downtown come to the school to try to get the kids to share their feelings.

Him and his dad look around the room some more and find another clue. They had to push a certain picture for the wall to open. When it opened they thought it was the treasure room but they were wrong. They went to the wall and figured out that they had to use the pipe that they found in The Charlotte. They put the pipe in the wall and twisted it. The wall opened to reveal the treasure. The FBI agent came and made a deal with Ben that he will not have to go to prison if he gives 89% to the museum. Ben got 10% and Riley got 1%. Ben and Dr. Chase got married and moved into a huge house.
First off, Stanley was a bigger kid, the biggest kid in school. Stanley, the bullied, big kid of school, was often bullied by pupils and sometimes adults such as teachers since Stanley’s size was atypical. Fat and Tall, when Stanley, arrived at Camp Green Lake, many of the other juvenile delinquent’s would bully Stanley, after many hardships Stanley managed, through all his perseverance, to earn their respect. He gives them $50 and directions to a church outside of town. The boys hop on a freight train and find the hideout where they are to wait until Dally comes for them. Hiding in an abandoned, rural church, they feel like real outsiders, with their greased, long hair and general hoody appearance. They both cut their hair, and Pony colors his for a disguise. They pass the time in the church playing cards and reading aloud from Gone with the Wind.
A student should remain in public school until he or she gets a high school diploma or GED because without either of them they won’t be able to get better job opportunities, go to college, and get a job with higher wages.
The next morning the two make it to the new farm later than expected and slightly annoys the owner. The owner begins to question the two men, but only Goerge answers because George told Lennie not to speak. This makes the new owner suppositious of Lennie and threatens to lower his wages, but George defends Lennie saying that Lennie isn’t smart but is a great worker. The owner hires the two men and tells them to go put their belongs down in the bunkhouse.

Camp Green Lake. A place to build 'character' for juvenile delinquents. As if. Sure, juvenile delinquents are there and they do their time but building character? No way. At Green Lake you would imagine a beautiful Lake with lush green surroundings, and that was once there but now it's all gone. Now all there is, is dry land for miles, a detonation camp full of boys, and a heap of holes. You see, the boys at Camp Green Lake dig a hole every day to build 'character'. 5 foot deep and 5 feet in every direction, no matter how long you were out in the heat for. There's only one rule at Camp Green Lake, don't upset the Warden.
The family then gathers food and the belongings they are able to take, loads them on the truck overnight, and leaves the next morning. They are faced with the struggles the moment they are ready to leave. Grandpa has to be drugged in order for them to get him into the truck. They stop at a service station and the man accuses them of wanting things for free. The family dog is killed by a car. As they move through towns they stop at night next to the Wilsons. The family begins to fall apart and Grandpa dies of a stroke. Since the family had limited money they just bury the body with the help of the Wilsons. They begin to travel with them. Their truck breaks down so the boys have to go find parts to fix it while Ma and the girls move on to a camp because grandma is starting to go crazy. The people at the camp laugh at the Joads when Pa tells them their plan. They tell him that they are fooling people, paying them low wages, and that families are starving but Pa doesn't believe it. The loads and Wilsons move on through Arizona as fast as they could because the border patrol tells them they can't stay for long. When they finally reach California they stop alongside a river at another camp. The men tell Pa again that they will suffer in California. They

Their similarities helps them understand each other; through their experiences. For one, they are both outcasted socially. Stanley has no friends and always bullied, by Derrick Dune in school, and by X-Ray and his gang in Camp Green Lake. Speaking of Camp Green Lake, both have nicknames given by X-Ray and the two are just children. Similarly, Zero and Stanley were unlucky at some point. Stanley bears his family curse of luck, while Zero lost his mother and is homeless. Zero and Stanley are misunderstood. For example, Stanley was accused for stealing Clyde Livingston’s shoes; and Zero being assumed to be dumb. Finally, to end in a happy note, Stanley and Zero are rich at the end of the
Young boys grow up to be the men, as friends and family are heavily influencing them. The book Holes written by Louis Sachar and is a story of a young man who has gotten into some trouble, who learns about bullying and being self-reliant. The main character Stanley Yelnats, finds himself at a juvenile detention center due to the family “curse.” Camp Green Lake is the center where Stanley is attending. The land that Camp Green Lake currently resides is on a dried up lake. At one point in time, it was once a huge lake, in the middle of a thriving city, which now is a washed up desert wasteland. It has not rained in that area in years, which is why camp counselors believed this, would be a perfect place to teach troubled kids a lesson. Throughout the novel, Stanley learns that though the people who surround him are the biggest influences. Stanley realizes his transformation from being a young boy and entering manhood. The novel Holes shows that negative treatment from friends and family have a positive impact on the journey towards manhood.
