The controversy in the relationship of infancies’ temperaments and maternal attachments are still debatable between temperament and attachment theorists down to our present day (De Wolff & Ijzendoorn, 1997). Temperament is termed as early projections of stable individual variations involving self regulation and reactivity that encompasses behaviors, emotions and attention (Boom, 1994). Attachment, on the other hand, is commonly known as having a bond that allows us to be comfortable with special people in our lives (Berk, 2006). According to Alexander Thomas and Stella Chess (1977), their research showed that the infant’s temperament is of intrinsic nature and how the process in developing of the child-adult interactions ultimately affects their attachment status (Coffman, Levitt, & Guacci-Franco, 1995). In addition, attachment theorists like Mary Ainsworth (1978) and John Bowlby (1969), however, suggested that maternal sensitivity and responsiveness from the caregiver mantles the infant’s temperament that is the determinant of attachment (Coffman et al., 1995). In this essay, considering the above mentioned, the essay will explore whether the antecedents on attachment are based on goodness of fit that consist of the infant’s in-born temperament and maternal perception caused by parenting style, or that it lies mainly from maternal sensitivity to the infant, and lastly, the association between infant’s temperament and maternal sensitivity and responsiveness.

By being an INTP, I have interpreted why some things work in my favor. Being a perceiver allows me to embrace change while keeping any ill-thoughts (regarding changes I do not agree with) to myself. Carl’s discovery of the two major typical differences in human psychology such as extrovert and introvert influenced Katherine Cook Briggs and her daughter Isabel Myers theories and lead them to experiment during World War II. A layman would define personality as an individual’s characteristics in terms of how they think and behave. Many theorists, however, interprets personality differently resulting in various personality theories. Personality is determined by traits which are behaviours displayed by a person in most given situations. How a person reacts to common circumstances may also be used to foresee future behaviours. Traits are then categorized into types that allow easier comparisons to be made between each individual’s attributes. The focus of this paper would be on the biological aspects of personality whereby traits are thought to be inheritable through genetics and associated with the central nervous system. Behavioural genetics are research that makes use of results from studies done on family, twins and adoptions. The findings of how both genes and environment influences personality from the studies will be discussed. Some researchers found possible issues with the representativeness of such studies. The outline of Eysenck’s biological model of personality and arousal, Gray’s BAS/BIS theory and Cloninger’s biological model of personality will further explain the biological effect on personality.
The debate between the two schools of thought, attachment versus temperament, has been an ongoing battle. Reasoning behind both attachment and temperament make it difficult at times to confidently support one way or another. While the adaptation between child and caregiver can be hard to quantify, there are valid theories that support how crucial this relationship can be in the child’s development later in life. On the other hand, nothing is ever set in stone or permanent. That is the beauty of evolution, growth and free will that can greatly impact our outcomes.

Similarly, personality predispositions can determine levels of neuroticism that may influence one’s style of coping in the face of both positive and negative external factors which can determine negative affect (Diener, 1996). Happiness, a core aspect of positive subjective wellbeing, involves maintaining a superior level of positive affect in comparison to negative effect, based on specific positive or negative emotions linked to the recent experiences in one’s life (Emmons & Diener, 1985). Positive emotions such as joy and pride must trump negative emotions such as frustration and sadness in the recent past or present in order for an individual to feel happy. Life satisfaction builds on this and is a cognitive valuation of the quality of an individual’s experiences as a sum throughout their entire life (Emmons & Diener, 1985). Individual personality traits have been found to influence the different patterns and levels of life satisfaction, positive and negative affects and simply general, overall happiness (McCrae, 1983).

The Keirsey Temperament Sorter II identified my temperament as artisan, and the classic temperament report identified me as an ISTP, or Introverted Sensing Thinking Perceiving. The description of my temperament was dead on with my view of myself, especially the more in depth classic temperament. My strengths include an excellent ability to apply logic and reason to solve problems or discover how things work, and being high;y practical and realistic, however I will not function well in regimented or structured environments, as I will become bored or feel stifled. This temperament profile also correlates to my learning style, as the Keirsey Temperament Sorter II results also mention that I learn best hands-on, and states that ISTP’s are a master of their physical environment.
