Aging is an inevitable process where we as living beings grow old. Aging has some benefits and may bring some problems too. There is a great variety of researches done with different purposes which provide us with some information and statistics.
As we grow old we learn numerous different things. Laura Carstensen, a professor of psychology at Stanford University published a study where she showed older people tend to be happier. In her TED presentation titled “Older People Are Happier”, Carstensen shows research that demonstrates that as people get older they become happier, more content, and have a more positive outlook on the world. Carstensen also mentions in her presentation that in her experiment she showed some happy and distressing photos to young and older volunteers. The brains of older subjects reacted much more strongly to positive photos and conveniently were unable to remember having seen some of the distressing pictures (Carstensen 2011). Carstensen mentions as we grow older our brains tend to keep good-memories and ignore bad ones.

According to Orth when people grow older their priorities become clearer. Orth also mention higher levels of self-appreciation and acceptance. Even though growing old have some benefits, our health will not be the same as when we were young.
Many issues, both genetic and environmental, affect how we age. A 2014 Census Bureau report, “65+ in the United States: 2010,” present some statistics regarding people over 65 years old in the United States. Laura Skarnulis publishes her study titled “7 Health Challenges Of Aging” where she explains seven of the most common heath issues senior citizens face. Obesity, arthritis, osteoporosis and cancer are among the most common challenges senior citizens have to face. Skarnulis mentions that we should take care of ourselves while we are young. time. Finally, and interview conducted by myself showed me similar results. When I asked about benefits of aging, the answers people provided me were related to experience gained and food discounts. They also agreed that the result of those years playing and taking their bodies to their limit certainly has something to do with their pains and aches nowadays. Even though they were aware of their health not being at its best, it was clear they still focus on the positive side of life and maintain an optimistic way of living.

In conclusion, there are several benefits to thinking about ageing as a lifelong process, and not just as something which affects older people. Combating ageism at any age, celebrating the diversity amongst our ageing population, and the importance of having a healthier lifestyle in the present to prepare our bodies for the challenges posed by ageing are all valid strengths to this reasoning. Aging is defined as a systemic limitations of human biology that is vulnerable to wear & tear, and diseases. Aging studies can be performed in two ways : cross sectional or longitudinal. A cross sectional study can allow a snapshot of entire life without taking the time. It usually comprises large samples. A limitation of these studies include cohort effects and secular trends. Cohort effect are the effects of being born at the same time, exposed to the same events in society, and influenced by the same demographic trends and thus, having similar experiences that make the group unique from other groups. Normally, there is no measure of true change and variability in this technique. Individual differences are confounded with age differences.
Today, the world’s population is aging at a very fast pace and the United States is no exception to this demographic change. According to the U.S Census Bureau, senior citizens will account for 21% of the American population in 2050 (Older Americans, 2012). Although living longer lives may not seem like a negative sign, living longer does not necessarily mean living healthier. Older adults of today are in need of long-term health care services more than any generation before them (Older Americans, 2012). Because of the growing need for senior care, millions of families are facing critical decisions on how to provide care for their parents.
Ageing is a continuing life cycle, it is an ongoing developmental event that brings certain changes in one’s own psychological and physical state. It is a time in one's own life where an elderly individual reminisce and reflect, to bask and live on previous accomplishments and begin to finish his life cycle. As American society has evolved in the past 100 years and technology has increased and improved, so has the life expectancy for individuals. Currently, females can expect to live for 81 years on average, while males can expect to live for 75 years, giving an average life expectancy of 78.3 years (Santrock, 2013, p.536). According to Santrock (2013), “since 1900, improvements in medicine, nutrition, exercise, and lifestyle have increased our life expectancy an average of 30 additional years,” but another important factor is the decreasing infant mortality, allowing a larger population of people, including older adults (p.536). Making good choices in diet, regular exercise, avoiding drugs and alcohol, along with getting enough sleep and maintaining a low and healthy stress level can all increase life expectancy.
