We were lucky enough to have the American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA) conference in Salt Lake City this year. The conference brought in around 7,000 OT practitioners and exhibitors. To prepare for the conference, our class compiled a list of businesses that were assessable for people in a wheelchair that would be attending. We split the businesses up between our class, called the businesses assigned, and asked them the following questions: How many stairs are there to enter? Where can someone park? Do they have an accessible bathroom? Is the building wheelchair accessible? What is the distance from the Salt Palace? Is there outdoor and/or indoor seating? Is alcohol served? “The purpose of the Wisconsin Assistive Technology Initiative (WATI) is to provide a comprehensive and thorough assistive technology assessment process” (Barbara, n.d., para. 14). WATI consists of an Assistive Technology Consideration Guide that is made like a table. Horizontally the table entails tasks that the student might be expected to complete in the classroom. Vertically the table asks if the student completes the tasks with special accommodations or AT devices. It also asks what new assistive technology the student will try (Marino, 2006). The ultimate goal of the WATI is to consider different types of AT, and to ensure that the student receives the best services and accommodations. The Occupational Therapy Practice Framework (OTPF) categorizes feeding, eating and swallowing as occupations and activities that are essential to the basic well-being and survival of the individuals across the lifespan (AOTA, 2013 p. 19). The American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA) has a long-standing position on the practitioner’s role on feeding, eating and swallowing. For example, feeding, eating and swallowing are included in official AOTA documents and publications such as AOTA Model Definition of Occupational Therapy for State Practice Acts (2007), and Scope of Practice Document official AOTA document (2006). Occupation is defined as “activites of everyday life, names, organized and given meaning by individuals and a culture” (Association, 2006). This article also discusses the historical aspects of occupational therapy. Occupational therapy was founded by many different professionals with different backgrounds, that came together to share the same idea about how occupational therapy should be and the importance of activites for a person. This article also talks about different types of services that occupational therapy offers. Occupational therapists and assistances can work in many different settings. With the variety of settings a therapist and assistance can work in, the services that are offered there are different. Some different services that can be offered at these settings can include community mobility skills, stress management, alternative routines and habits, and more. It is important for therapists and assistances to know what settings offer what type of services when they are referencing their client to a new setting. The last topic this article discussed
Occupational therapy has a multifaceted nature providing endless opportunities to serve a wide range of people within many environments, which is just one of the reasons I love this occupation. My long term goals enlist the desire to maximize my knowledge and abilities to care and supplement the lives of anyone that may cross my path in this career. I have seen occupational therapy positively impact the lives of people around me, and I strive to be a bigger role on the team helping make that happen.

Occupational Therapy is a health care designed to treat an individual’s disability and difficulty to improve their performance in their daily life activities. The term occupation does not only refer to the job of an individual but refers to what they do in their everyday lives, which is why any individual, regardless of age, may benefit from occupational therapy. Occupation is everything people do to occupy themselves, which includes work, leisure, and self care (CAOT). An occupational therapy program aims to improve the individual’s performance and engagement because of their physical, sensory, or cognitive disabilities.
Occupational therapy (OT) theory offers valuable contribution to support professionalization since possessing a unique body of knowledge is essential to define a profession (Cooper, 2012). To utilize theory effectively, it is essential to differentiate between generic and specific theory as knowledge of the core theory helps to form OT identity and action as a practicing practitioner. In this essay, OT theory refers only to philosophy and OT specific models. Frame of references (FOR) will not be included since it can be shared with the other professions (Boniface & Seymour, 2012).
Change is something that human have to face often, yet it is still very hard for us to adapt to it. We can, in turn, agree that change is not easy (Jacobs 2002). Occupational therapy oriented my religious upbringing and principles with the desire to improve the health and welfare of others. It provided me with the an avenue in which I could help others regain control over aspects of their life that were lost and thus provide hope. Occupational therapy is defined as “helping people across the lifespan participate in the things they want and need to do through the therapeutic use of everyday activities”. The inherent value of occupational therapy is often underestimated and passed over. Occupational therapists do everything from helping children with disabilities so that they can fully engage in school activities to helping those who lost bodily functions in accidents to recover usage of their limbs.

Pre Occupational Therapists help and provide services for patients of all ages with injuries, illnesses, and disabilities to get through the everyday activities. They help these patients relearn and improve the skills and activities that we use in our everyday lives. Occupational therapists all have different tasks. For example, some occupational therapists work at schools, with doctors, registered nurses, in-home health organizations, and some are a part of a health care team. Occupational therapy (OT) is an interesting discipline which has its roots in just about every other form of therapy and medicine. Many aspects of OT are seen in everyday life, yet are unnoticed because of how common place they are in our society. When I thought of OT I thought of specialized equipment such as a modified spoon to help someone who has suffered a stroke to eat by themselves again. This is one aspect, however there are many more instances that OT assist other medical professionals. Throughout this paper I will discuss more in depth on what it is an occupational therapist does and why this type of therapy is essential to our activities of daily living.
