There have been many exceptional literary figures throughout American history, but very few are as revered as Robert Frost. Frost is considered to be one of the most prominent figures of the modernist period. The modernist period took place during the first half of the twentieth century, and it is characterized by its use of experimentation and belief in individualism (Rahn, 2011). After the death of his father, an eleven-year-old Frost and his family moved to Massachusetts, where he would spend most of his life (“Robert Frost and His Poems,” n.d.). New England is where Frost drew most of his literary inspiration and is the setting for most of his work. It consists of four stanzas and it is written in iambic tetrameter. The poem is about a man who comes upon a fork in the road with two paths, and the man contemplates which path he will take. Ultimately, he takes the less worn path, the path less traveled. The theme of the poem is choices and the effects that they have on a person 's life. The speaker laments the fact that he cannot travel both paths simultaneously so that he can see the outcome of both, “Two roads diverged in a yellow road / And sorry I could not travel both” (“The Road Not Taken,” 1-2). The speaker goes on to state that, “And looked down one as far as I could” (Frost 4). The speaker gazes down the path so that he may get a glimpse of the outcome of choosing that path; however, it comes to a point that he can see no further. The speaker ultimately chooses the other path and proceeds to walk down it admiring the landscape knowing that he made the right choice for himself. The speaker is stating an impossibility with the destruction of the world twice so that he can elaborate on the destructive force of rational, cold intellect. The fire we know and think about is a bringer of Light and heat but as well as pain and burning. Ice is ignorance and cold hate sort of feel to it. The speaker says he is “sorry I could not travel both”, meaning that he feels sorrowful about not being able to take both roads. This stanza has a much deeper meaning, more than just not being able to take a path. Although the speaker travels into a yellow wood, the paths represent a very important decision the traveler must make. This is an example of a metaphor where the traveler compares the decision to two paths in a wood. He observes the first choice, said as looking down as far as he could in line four, and tries to see where it will take him in the future. Robert Lee Frost began life in San Francisco on March 26, 1874. For an unknown reason, Frost believed for years that he was actually born in 1875. When Frost’s father died in 1885 his mother decided to move closer to her wealthy parents in Massachusetts. In California, Frost had dropped out of kindergarten after one day, and upon returning to the first grade, also dropped out. This was no deterrent on Frost to attend college. He was accepted to Harvard but instead attended Dartmouth because of his financial situation. Even though Frost found the school to be anything but challenging, he would not finish his time at Dartmouth, nor earn any formal degree in a school (Bengtsson). He once said of schooling that “Education is hanging around until you’ve caught on.” Interestingly enough, Robert Frost held several postions at credible schools, including Amherst and Harvard. Also, Frost was awarded an incredible amount of honorary degrees from Berkley to Yale (Parini 59). Frosts careers also ranged from editing for Henry Holt to raising poultry on his Derry, New Hampshire farm.

Robert Frost’s story starts on March 26, 1874 in San Francisco, California. Frost was born to father William Prescott and mother Isabelle Moodie; he also had a younger sister Jeanie. When Robert Frost was 11 years old, his father died of tuberculosis. Shortly after, Frost and his mother and sister, then 2 years old, moved to Lawrence, Massachusetts. In high school he became interested in reading and writing poetry. He enrolled in Dartmouth College in Hanover, New Hampshire. He also enrolled in Harvard, but he never earned a formal college degree. After college, he had many jobs including being a teacher, cobbler, and editor of the Lawrence Sentinel. His first poem, ‘My Butterfly’ was published in the New York Newspaper, The Independent, in November 8, 1894. In 1895, he married his wife Miriam White and she was a major inspiration for his poetry. This is the beginning of an iambic tetrameter by Robert Frost in which he expresses the thoughts of the speaker as they come to a fork in the road. After reading this poem and being quite confused by it, I was determined to find out what it meant. Its simplicity is misleading because it can represent several opposites in the world today that correspond to fire and ice. To begin my understanding of the poem, I decided to answer some questions. First question was who is some? Some represents humans, which is not difficult to understand, but then some can also represent lovers. This poem is mainly about desire and hate. In the poem, fire represents desire and ice represents hate. The first theory of fire most likely came from the bible, which describes the world ending this way and the second theory of ice is the scientific theory of the world freezing over when the sun burns out. Knowing these theories was somewhat useful, but did not really aid in understanding Frost's opinion on which would make for a better end.
“Fire and Ice” is a poem that paints a bleak picture of the future in which there are two paths, fire and ice, that both lead to the end of the world. Frost uses language throughout the poem that appears to be simple, but is actually very effective at communicating deeper, insightful meanings.
