In The Poisonwood Bible, Kingsolver paints a picture of a world-weary Adah Price. The author accomplishes this through various depictions of Adah’s beliefs, such as her convictions on Christian hypocrisy, which will ultimately lead her to the question of God’s very existence. This “what-if” is a universally debated inquiry that colors the way in which Adah interacts with the world, her family, and the people of the Congo.
In the novel The Poisonwood Bible by Barbara Kingsolver, Nathan Price takes his wife and four daughters to the Congo to spread Christianity. When the Price family arrives in the Congo, they are the only American family there, and there are few people who speak English. The family feels out of place and unprepared to live in the drastically different village. Rachel is the character that feels cut off from home the most. Rachel’s experience with exile is very hard on her, but in the end, it has a positive impact on her life.
The change in narrators in The Poisonwood Bible by Barbara Kingsolver conveys the theme of western arrogance through naiveté, malapropisms, and the change in mentality found in the various narrations of the characters.
The Poisonwood Bible is the story of an evangelical Baptist preacher named Nathan Price who uproots his wife and four daughters from the modern culture of America and moves them to the Kilanga Village in the Belgian Congo as missionaries. He is bullheaded and obstinate in all his ways. His approach is inflexible, unsympathetic, and unaccepting of the culture and customs of the people of Kilanga. Nathan Price exemplifies the words of Romans 2:4 that says, “Or do you despise the riches of His goodness, forbearance, and longsuffering, not knowing the goodness of God leads you to repentance?” He did not share the goodness of God, but sought to spread his uncompromising pious agenda. Instead of leading people to God he turned them away.
The Poisonwood Bible by Barbara Kingsolver is a work of historical fiction. The novel is based the Congo in 1959, while it was still under Belgian control. Nathan Price is a southern Baptist preacher from Bethlehem, Georgia who uproots his family, consisting of wife and three daughters, and takes them on a mission trip to Kilanga. Orleanna Price, Nathan’s wife, narrates the beginning of each book within the novel. Rachel, Leah, Adah, and Ruth May rotate the narration throughout each book. Rachel is the oldest Price child, and high materialistic. She refuses to accept the ways of the Congo, believing that she is better than everyone simply because of where she had her start in life. Leah is the next oldest, and she is a self-proclaimed tomboy. She likes to climb trees and practically worships at the feet of her father. Adah is the handicapped one, with a physical deformity. However, this deformity does not limit her, instead making her the smartest of the Price girls. Ruth May is the baby of the family, and has not yet lost the childhood innocence that she views the world with. Barbara Kingsolver uses a very interesting narrative style in the novel, switching between four narrators between the ages of five and fifteen, who are all female. Kingsolver's use of multiple narrative perspectives serve to amplify life in the Congo during the early 1960s through characterization, religion, and politics.
In the first chapter of God Behaving Badly, David Lamb argues that God is unfairly given a bad reputation. He claims these negative perceptions are fueled by pop culture and lead many to believe the lie that the God of the Old Testament is angry, sexist, racist, violent, legalistic, rigid, and distant. These negative perceptions, in turn, affect our faith. Ultimately, Lamb seeks to demonstrate that historical context disproves the presumptuous aforementioned. In addition, he defends his position by citing patterns of descriptions that characterize God throughout the Old Testament. “Our image of God will directly affect how we either pursue or avoid God. If we believe that the God of the Old Testament is really harsh, unfair and cruel, we won’t want anything to do with him” (Lamb 22). Clearly, they way Christians choose to see God will shape their relationship with Him.

Adah’s alienating experience with American life greatly deviates from the life she builds in the Congo. In Kilanga, Adah is the one seen as normal out of the Price family, as according to Ruth May “they’ve all got their own handicap children or a mam with no feet, or their eye put out” (Kingsolver 53.) Rachel is the one seen by the villagers as the odd one out, as her platinum blonde hair is an irregularity in the Congo. This struggle to adjust to being perfectly ordinary is a new one for Adah, who is simultaneously trying to find her independence. Throughout the novel, Adah stays quiet, choosing to be alone with her thoughts instead of talking with the family that she struggles to relate to. This conscious alienation results in the dependence
On November 28, 1757 in the large bustling town of London, England; James and Catherine Blake welcomed their son William Blake into the world (Paananen xix-xxi). A happy and powerfully imaginative child, William was one of five (Bedard 8-14). Contrary to what his linguistic talents may dictate he received no formal education, due to his parents’ intense religious beliefs and hesitations to branch beyond their sect, in regards to education (Bedard 8-14). William was however taught basic reading and writing skills by his mother (Bedard 8-14). At the age of ten he was enrolled in the Paris Drawing School where he learned the basics of drawing (Bedard 8-14). Many years later on August 18, 1782 he married Catherine Boucher, an uneducated maid (Bedard 8-14). Though a seemingly unlikely couple, they remained faithful to each other until William’s death on August 12, 1827 (Paananen xix-xxi). He was buried in an unmarked grave in Bunhill Fields with the rights of the Church of England (Paananen xix-xxi).

Because of their Puritanical beliefs, it is no surprise that the major theme that runs throughout Mary Rowlandson and Jonathan Edwards’s writings is religion. This aspect of religion is apparent in not only the constant mentions about God himself, but also in the heavy use of biblical scriptures. In their respective writings, Rowlandson and Edwards utilize scripture, but for different purposes; one uses it to convey that good and bad events happen solely because of God’s will, and the other uses it, in one instance, to illustrate how it brought him closer to God, and, in another instance, to justify his harsh claims about God’s powerful wrath.
The Chronicles of Narnia are veritably the most popular writings of C.S. Lewis. They are known as children’s fantasy literature, and have found favor in older students and adults alike, even many Christian theologians enjoy these stories from Lewis; for there are many spiritual truths that one can gleam from them, if familiar with the Bible. With this in mind, and in the interest of this assignment, the purpose of this paper is an attempt to analyze one of the many doctrines of the Christian faith from The Lion, The Witch, And, The Wardrobe (LWW), namely, temptation and how Lewis illustrates it through an individual character, Edmund.
