Jihang Jiang ESL 828 The Amazing Rising Way Of Sam. At this modern time, seeking for the dream we made in childhood is become unrealistic. How about fulfill the childhood pact in the slum? The Pact, written by Drs. Sampson Davis, George Jenkins, and Rameck Hunk. Shows me the most incredible growth history for three black boys during their way to the final success. The story is around the 1980s. Sam, Rameck and George made a pact to be the doctor, and they successfully got into the college through the painstaking efforts. Once they were blocked by high tuition, been affect by their criminal neighborhood, and even doubt their original dream. The life of three boys was full of rough, tragedy and chaos. can find friendship, faith, and love in their life progress. It makes me wonder, there are still faint glimmers of civilization left in this barbaric slaughterhouse that was once known as humanity. Nevertheless, there is always someone in the story can be a role model and give us the deepest impression. That is Sam, who was the most unimpressive boy of them three, succeed by help from a good mentor , his perseverance and a bit of luck. He is more realistic for me with out many dramatic plots. The most important fact to support Sam to success is the help for his mentor.
At the time Sam got into the college, he met many difficulties that he can hardly deal with them. He can’t even set his time properly. And that’s the time Carla shows up. Who was just an enthusiastic teacher of the college, voluntary to be Sam’s mentor by willing to help the black kids to reach their dream and bright future. The guidelines and communication from Carla truly inspired and comfort Sam in his daily life. Sam was an autistic boy because his family matter bothered him. Carla had found out, and made great work to help Sam to get rid of the past negative issue. She was keeping communicate with Sam about his past and gave solutions that Sam can deal with his terrible memories. As a result, Sam was slowly opened his heart to Carla, share the story he would never talk about. I rarely talked to anyone about my family. Some things I never even told George or Rameck, p.126. There are several times that Sam was sink into the self-doubt, but Carla kept encourage him and guide him back to the right path. One night during Sam’s freshman year, he received a call that his older brother had been beaten and hurt really bad. Sam was immediately feeling guilty and confused about continue the study. He thought maybe it’s not fit for the people like him who grew up in the slum try to break out the chains and stay in the high education college because none of his brothers or sisters did. he should go back to live with his family, but not leave them alone. The next morning, Sam went to see Carla. She told Sam in patience, slowly solve his confusion. During the conversations, Carla had shared her own family and experience to Sam. Put Sam as her own family to eliminate his worries. She helped me plow through the pain to see that it was best for me to stay in college and complete my education. p.128. As a reader, I can feel the sincere trust can truly warm the frozen heart. Sam can never reach the success if he didn’t have had Carla as his mentor, he could fall down and never got the chance to move on without Carla’s guide. For Sam, Carla is not only an adviser, but also his family and guardian. Sam’s incredible perseverance also supported him go through many rough times. To be closer to the medical school, Sam was transferred to Rutgers University to continue his senior year study . He discovered that Rutgers’s Livingston campus is predominantly black. Compare with the campus he stays before, he felt more familiar with and comfortable, After a couple of months , he met a girl and fell in love. Sam cannot ignore this happiness, they quickly became a couple and start hanging out. She even helped Rameck and George to plan the surprise party for Sam’s birthday. As the person who was lake of love since childhood, Sam felt unprecedented happy and domestic felicity. Unfortunately, Sam and his girlfriend broke up in next few months. But Sam cannot forget her even she’s gone, it cost him a lot of time and spirit. I missed her and needed her in my life, and I stopped by the Livingston campus to look for her. p.174. Nobody can blame Sam because it’s human nature to seeking for love especially when they grew up in the environment which lacks family care. Sam found out this problem after days but don’t know how to choice. Sam wanted to have the care from others, and also wanted to maintain the good work with his study. After seriously consider, Sam finally decided to move back to the right way. His perseverance of pact makes his mind clear and realized that to be a doctor is much more important for him than these temporary joy. The story will go to an different ending if he didn’t make the tough decisions by his perseverance. He might find a comfy life, but will never reach the goal of being a doctor. The good timing is also very important for Sam to get his final success.
the chance he caught is much better than his terrible neighbors, these precious chance offered him some precious resource and opportunities to get his final goal. To study in med-school, it require finish the Pre-Medical/Pre-Dental Plus program. At the time Sam was considered about the high tuition, he got an opportunity to get into the EOP program, which can highly decrease the financial burden. Thus, he got the chance to study in the Pre-medical/ Pre-Dental program, which is only less than ten people get in. Sam also met some responsible professors whom force him to adapt the study environment of medical science. The professors pushed me to use my brain, which had been in the snooze mode practically all four years of high school. p.114. The EOP program provided Sam the necessary resource he needs for the next step, to get what he need to get into the Med-school. And the good professor told him how to train himself more efficient to get use to the study method of medical science. Sam saw the important of these chances and opportunities, so he didn’t let them slip away, but catch the chance and use them properly. If Sam didn’t have enough luck to get those chance, he probably never find the way to the
Med-School. The success of Sam was based on the help from his mentor, their own characteristics and the perfect timing he got. These facts made him raise from the chaos, built him unbelievable contributions.Like old people usually said, “ Rome was not built in a day”. Now I know, even in the terrible environment, people can still have the chance to make distinguished success by proper using resource from inside and outside.
Having a mentor was really helpful in Sam’s life. Since He lived in bad neighborhood full of gangs and drugs, he needed to have a role model who is his Kung Fu teacher Reggie, who used to live in the same neighborhood with Sam. Reggie’s lessons kept Sam busy from all trouble and focused on his education. Ms. Sandi Schimmel, a sixth grade teacher, was also one of the mentors that helped Sam staying on the right path, when she recommended Sam to
The theme “rite of passage” was used in the novel A Separate Peace, by John Knowles. This moving from innocence to adulthood was contained within three sets of interconnected symbols: summer and winter, the Devon and Naguamsett Rivers, and peace and war. These symbols served as a backdrop upon which the novel was developed. The loss if Gene Forrester’s innocence was examined through these motifs.
As the student begins his essay, he points out that Sammy is part of the lower class structure. He is an “eighteen-year-old boy who is working as a checkout clerk in an A&P in a small New England town five miles from the beach” (2191). While working an afternoon shift on Thursday, he notices “these girls in nothing but bathing suits” (2191) enter the store. It is in this scene that the student begins to identify the differences between the group of girls and Sammy.
“We want to emphasize that the personal characteristics and skills of each individual are equally important”. (Page #221, para #3) Owen and Sawhill are inquiring that to be successful in any major requires dedication and personal motivation, which is another example of the authors bringing pathos into their argument. Owen and Sawhill state that “if they don’t just enroll but graduate, they can improve their lifetime prospects”. (page #220, para #1) Owens and Sawhill statement is taken as, applying with great intensions is not good enough to be successful in college. Owen and Sawhill are completely open about the fact that college isn’t for everyone and that’s perfectly acceptable. “It may be that for a student with poor grades who is on the fence about enrolling in a four-year program, the most bang-for-the-buck will come from vocationally-oriented associate’s degree or career-specific technical training”. (Page #222, para #1) this statement opens the argument to be about both, is college worth it financially, and also academically. Owens and Sawhill want their reader to understand that, being pushed to achieve something that you have no passion for attaining, only robs someone of their true
An Imperfect Offering is a powerful personal memoir from a James Orbinski, a Canadian who has spent most of his adult life in front-line humanitarian work in the world's worst conflict zones. Despite its dark chapters, it is also a hopeful story about the emergence of Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) as a new and independent agent of civil society, and the possibilities of making the world a better place. In “An Imperfect Offering”, James Orbinski tells the story of people who have been harmed by war, and humanitarian workers who have come to heal them when possible. He engages in deep reflection on the nature of humanitarian response and the many threats to this most human activity. He has sharp criticism for governments who act to cause suffering or to prevent its relief. He asks, “How am I able to be in relation to the suffering of others?” His life as a doctor, and a humanitarian worker illustrates this answer. Accordingly, the books main thesis is that humanitarianism is about the struggle to create space to be fully human. However, he illustrates how this struggle is becoming increasingly difficult with the imperfect offering of politics, which has resulted in the blurring of boundaries between humanitarian assistance and the political objectives of military intervention.
Daydreaming that the girls will all be fawning over him, Sammy makes a stand against Lengel and his motive is to receive thanks from the girls for his brave deeds. Yet, 180 degree turn for his expectation when he quits and departs from A&P, “they are gone of course” (835). Sammy may have quit his job and announces it loudly, the girls think about the embarrassment they had before and left Sammy with resentment. The idea dawned upon regarding in this situation is Sammy made an involved mistake. This type of mistake is familiar with nature of a person but take efforts to prevent it. Without distinguishing what is right or wrong, defending from the right side may results a fake vision and the wrong side may leads the person to misery. Along with the depression from the being left behind, Sammy regrets about the gestures that is “[fold the apron, ‘Sammy’ stitched in red and put it on the counter]” (835), he made before he walks out of the doors. As soon as he steps out of A&P, Sammy does not know what to expect or do. All he realized is that he was forced to be a dynamic character when he quit his job and has to put away in juvenile self to go into adulthood. This reveals one complex mistake which is making decisions that has unpleasant outcomes and unable to avoid them. The complex mistake that young people tend to results make is making a sudden

“I always knew I wanted to be a teacher,” she stated. Her passion for helping children with special needs was developed at a later age. The reason why Chris decided to be a special education teacher was because of two twin boys in her grade who had special needs. Chris was only in kindergarten at the time, but she recalls that one of these boys did not get to go to school. The other boy, Jimmy, could come to school, but he would have to leave halfway through the school day. Chris was confused and upset about how Jimmy could not be at school and asked her mom about this. The reason why Jimmy and his brother were not at school was because there was no special education program. This moment, even though she was in kindergarten, shaped Chris’s plan for her

The main character Gene Forrester is repeatedly overshadowed by his best friend, Finny, this forces him through a state of anger, distrust, and aggravation. Although Gene has several attributes to be proud about, he decides to focus on Finny's actions instead. Through the use of characterization for Gene Forrester, Knowles demonstrates the fact that when one finds their own identity it allows for them to overcome hardships and undergo growth.

For example, my brother went through the similar situation as Sammy. He used to work at a clothing store and a group of black friends came to the store. My brother felt very offended and quit his job because he knew standing up for the group of friends was the right thing to
In addition, Patterson states, “[. . .] I thought that I wanted to become a surgeon [. . .] I thought I would love to perform surgeries and remedy horrible situations for people” (229). The author maintains that at one point he was convinced that a career in medicine was his calling since he aspired to remedy the sick from their afflictions. Nonetheless, he was discouraged after realizing that he would have to be proficient in his studies while being provided a generous loan in order to complete four years of medical school. Furthermore, the author insists that if he became a doctor his schedule would prevent him from any leisure for himself and his family. He acknowledges that, “[he has] always been interested in English and sharing stories with people” and therefore decides to strive for a position as an English professor (230). In short, Patterson concludes that his grandfather’s input along with the knowledge he gained throughout his life and the realizing the reality to become a surgeon propelled him down a road towards a position in English that would allow him in a way that he could not have accomplished in
