in Summerton, where the Silver royals and elites hold their summer court, intending to land a big score. However, a terrorist attack back in the country’s capital puts Summerton on edge, and Reds are rounded up across Summerton. Gisa is caught trying to pickpocket and has her hand crushed as a punishment. She can no longer work as a result. Unable to face her family, Mare does not go home right away. Mare ends up near a pub, where a man named Cal, who is evidently wealthy by his clothing and manners, speaks to her. Cal feels pity for Mare and promises to do what he can to help her. Soon after, Mare is shocked to learn that she has been taken on to work in the Royal Household. She is also amazed to see the Royal Family in the palace. There is King Tiberias the Sixth; his second wife, Queen Elara; their youngest son, Prince Maven; and the eldest son and heir to the throne from Tiberias’s first marriage, Cal, who will become Tiberias the Seventh upon assuming the throne. The Queens trial gets underway at the palace, where girls from the most elite Silver families, from the age of fourteen and older, compete in a demonstration of their power to win the hands of the princes in marriage. The most powerful girl is Evangeline. She has the power of controlling, reshaping, and manipulating metals. She uses this power to shake the viewing boxes of the attending Silver families and the Red servants, causing Mare to fall. When Mare falls, she creates a massive shield of lightning which protects her. She is instantly brought before the Royals. The king and queen do not know what to do with a Red with Silver powers. A cover story is decided upon, where Mare will portray the orphan daughter of a war hero, raised in poverty by a Red. In exchange, Mare’s brothers will be brought home from the war, and her family will be taken care of. Mare agrees. It is then announced that Mare will marry Prince Maven, while Evangeline will marry Prince Cal. Mare does not believe what is happening. She has hated the Silvers for so long that she cannot imagine living with them. She is put into a schedule of learning how to be a lady, and how to use her powers. She begins meeting with Julian, brother of the dead queen, who recognizes Mare is different, though he doesn’t know exactly how. He tells her that not all Silvers are bad, and warns her that anyone can betray anyone. As time goes by, Mare develops romantic feelings for Cal and for Maven, though she tries to keep hating them. She then comes to the decision join the Scarlet Guard in order to make things right for the Reds and to end the ongoing war. To Mare's surprise, Maven joins her, telling her that it is time for a change. Mare and Maven agree to become part of a coup to seize the king and force reforms.
Mare tries to use Cal’s feelings for her to get him to turn against his father, but he does not agree. He orders troops after the Scarlet Guard instead. Cal’s troops capture Mare and Maven, and bring them to the king and queen. The king says that they both must be killed, but the queen will not allow this. She uses her powers to force Cal to kill his own father. Maven reveals himself as a traitor, having used Mare to help him destroy the Scarlet Guard and become king on his own. Mare and Cal are then sentenced to death, but manage to escape when they are helped by the Scarlet Guard. As the novel ends, Mare vows to kill

To what lengths would you go for a loved one? Would you destroy something in hopes that it would save them? That 's what Lyman Lamartine did in hopes to fix his PTSD afflicted brother. "The Red Convertible" was written by Louise Erdrich in 1974 and published in 2009 along with several other short stories. Lyman, and Henry, are brothers. The story starts by telling us about how the two brothers acquired a red convertible. Henry ends up being drafted into the Vietnam War, and comes back home suffering from PTSD. One day the pair decided to take a drive to the Red River because Henry wanted to see the high water. Ultimately, the story ends with a cliff-hanger, and we are left wondering what happens to the boys. The symbolic nature of the red convertible will play a key role in this literary analysis, along with underling themes of PTSD and war.
PTSD, also known as Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, can cause change and bring about pain and stress in many different forms to the families of the victims of PTSD. These changes can be immense and sometimes unbearable. PTSD relates to the characters relationship as a whole after Henry returns from the army and it caused Henry and Lyman’s relationship to crumble. The Red Convertible that was bought in the story is a symbol of their brotherhood. The color red has many different meanings within the story that relates to their relationship.
The story line of Red Harvest is riddled with double-crossing characters, bootleggers and crooked authority figures that obviously challenge universal moral codes of conduct. More importantly, some characters remain more morally ambivalent then others. Although, this is a troupe of hardboiled detective novels from the time, and the Film Noir genre where nothing is as it seems, there are particular characters and events that stand out. The language and situations are so double sided that the reader is forced to question the weave of their own moral fabric. Dashiell Hammett through his writing style is able to reflect on the concerns many had at the time regarding rise in crime and deterioration of Victorian age morals, coincided with the rise of the detective Anti-hero, guilty woman (femme fatal) and vigilantism.

Alexander Sergeyevich Pushkin’s the Queen of Spades opened many doors for Russian writing. The Queen of Spades is a Romantic short story, but it contains many Enlightenment aspects as well. The Queen of Spades is associated with gambling and insanity, both very Romantic ideals. To go along with the Romantic ideal it also includes a lot of common sense and obsession. These are quite the opposite of how romantics thought and very much how the people of the Enlightenment thought. Pushkin stepped out of the box and not only wrote in his own language, but brought two eras together, Romanticism and the Enlightenment, to create a spectacular work.
