In the movie, The Longest Yard, a former professional quarterback, Paul Crewe (Adam Sandler) who was known for throwing a game away is arrested while driving drunk while on probation. He is then sent to a facility with a bunch of delinquents and is given another chance by the warden to play football against the prison guards. During the time that he is in prison Crewe has to find a group of players within the facility to play on his team. Caretaker (Chris Rock) and Nate Scarborough (Burt Reynolds) a former Heisman trophy winner helps Crewe by finding inmates and recruiting them for the football game. Although, the movie is a fictional movie it shows us what the game of football is all about and if a bunch a delinquents can come together to play football as a team. …show more content…
As they recruit the inmates most deny Crewe, but start to have a change in heart as they get a chance to get back at the prison guards.
Caretaker gives Crewe as suggestion of recruiting more blacks into the team. Crewe follows Caretaker’s suggestion and goes to Deacon Moss (Michael Irvin) who is the leader of the African American group and denies him. As they look for more teammates they find themselves a star running back, Megget (Nelly) from Moss’ group who is really fast and good. The guards see hear about this and tries to get Megget to fight them by being racial, but to no avail gets Megget to. Deacon see’s this and it changes his heart to play football with Crewe. In professional sports and athletes you sometimes see race as a big aspect of the game. In The Longest Yard, you start to see some racial tensions between each other as most of the prisoners call the guards
“rednecks”. During game day as they played the prisoners start to worry less about the game and starts beating up the guards, but this soon changes as Crewe gets them together to beat the prisoners sayings, “a broken leg will heal, but a lose to the mean machine will last forever” , which puts the team back together to start playing football. By halftime the two teams are tied and the warden steps down to talk to Crewe and tells him to “lose” or he will be in jail for more years. Crewe tells warden he will throw the game if he doesn’t hurt the convicts. When the game resumes Crewe starts to give away the game and leads the team to believe that he’s throwing away the game like when he did in his professional years as Deacon says, “he hasn’t change one bit”. Paul comes back into the game and tells his teammates that he did throw away the game in his career and that the warden was going to imprison him if he didn’t. The team gets back together and makes a comeback to beat the prison guards. Even though at the beginning when all they prisoners didn’t agree with each other and there was a difference in race they all came together to play as a team to win. Crewe’s character at the beginning and at the end shows a dramatic change in his attitude and his way of things. At the beginning he was a professional player who was known for throwing away a game and now he’s a totally different person who didn’t throw away the game. As a professional sport or athlete you can conclude from The Longest Yard that in order to win you must play together as a team no matter the race. This to me is to strongest message the movies gets out to the audience.
Is High School football a sport, or is it more than that to some people? I’ve learned that the book is more sociological, which means that it focused on our human society of racial issues and also emphasizes the economy and the divide between the wealthy residents of one city versus the more working-class denizens of another are all subjects that are given an in-depth examination. This is more of the main or focal point of the whole book and in not so much in the movie. Although Bissinger's story is a true-life recounting of the 1988 football season of the Permian High School team, it reads like fiction and even though I believe his book is superior, the theatrical adaptation still stands apart as one of the great football movies ever to see in theaters. In the movie it was that team unit that was most significant in the development of the tale. Almost 80 – 90% of the book is in the film but there still are some differentiated contrasts found in the book in comparison to the movie. It has the intensity and the realism that kids were and are and also captures the...
Over the past years, many will say that football has become America’s new pastime, taking over our weekends for almost half of the year. Fans travel from all over the country to see their favorite college or professional teams play, and once the football season is over, the countdown clock for the first game of fall begins. There are many positive aspects to the sport, and the fans and players love it, but in John McMurtry’s “Kill ‘em, Crush ‘em, Eat ‘em Raw”, the reader is introduced to a side of football that some have not seen, and many choose to ignore. McMurtry believes that the game of football has become one of people just wanting to hurt other people and too many injuries are occurring to justify the fun
Giannetti defines mis en scene as, “the phrase that refers to the arrangement of all the visual elements of a theatrical production within a given playing area” (50). This French theatrical term provides an understanding of the meaning of arrangements the director chooses to place in the frame and where they are located. While mis en scene can be analyzed in any film, we looked at The Sandlot and The Longest Yard for strong examples. The Sandlot (1993) directed by David M. Evans is a film about a new kid, Scotty Smalls, moving to a new town and trying to befriend the local boys and finding a love for baseball while playing for the Sandlot team. On the other hand, we have The Longest Yard (2005) directed by Peter Segal, which is about Paul
“‘Athletics last for such a short period of time. It ends for people. But while it lasts, it creates this make-believe world where normal rules don’t apply. We build this false atmosphere. When it’s over and the harsh reality sets in, that’s the real joke we play on people’” (Bissinger xiv). “Friday Night Lights” shows the darker side of high school football. Players are taught to play games to win, and thats all that matters. Football players are put under a tremendous amount of pressure, almost enough to be considered unfair. Even though football is a “team sport”, pressure on individual players is unnecessary. Some players have the burden of the team, the city, their family, and their future, resting on their shoulders. These players are put under pressure that is physically and emotionally damaging, not to mention future ruining.
Football is an extremely violent game not only in the physical part but also in the mental part of the game. Players are coach to be vicious on the field. they are taught to get mad and take their aggression out on the other player. Which can be dangerous when two or more players are trying to hurt(intentionally or not) the other player by hitting them hard. High school sports are dangerous because rese...
American Football is a huge spectator sport where offensive and defensive players will use teamwork and perseverance to try and score more points than their opponent. Football is highly respected in America, where boys will try and pursue the dream of playing in the NFL (National Football Association) someday; but if you look at an average neighborhood, you will find that kids and adults of all ages love to go out and throw around the pigskin. (Lerner and Lerner 275). One thing Americans will take pride in is the college and NFL football teams they root for. People sit down with a beer and talk hours upon hours of football and two individuals can get in a heated discussion in the local sports store of whose sports team is better. Surprisingly enough, one will find the most passionate football players at the high school level. Most boys will start their football career as a young child in football programs such as Pop Warner to get a foothold and to get those involved in teamwork and friendships. These programs are usually the start to someone falling in love with the sport and making it a career choice eight years later. Football is one of America’s favorite sports. When fall season comes around, people across America are placing bets, finding out where that new sports bar is, and buying wide screen T.V’s to watch NFL on Sundays. After their team plays, they will go out and reminisce what happened that Sunday. While thousands of fans are still pumped from the NFL games they watched; small towns across America are getting ready to shut down their shops and restaurants to have the chance to make it to the local high schools football game. Ray Glier, a reporter for the New York Times, writes about football in the small town of Appala...
Ripley argues that football is a dangerous sport for students that young to begin to express their rage on and off the field. However, in the article Do Sports Build Character or Damage it? the author Mark Edmundson writes about his experience playing high school football. He said football made him a better person. He gained courage, strength, and heroic character. Edmundson said he applied everything in his life to football, which helped him get a job. Even though he was not the best player, he said he enjoyed going to practice every day to increase his skills. These attributes help Edmundson still to this
"There are wounds that never show on the body that are deeper and more hurtful thananything that bleeds. Don 't wait until you break. - Laurell Hamilton" This is oftentimes the sentiment felt by soldiers who have served in active duty and have been witnesses to tragedies that leave them emotionally scarred. The Clint Eastwood directed film, American Sniper is amovie that features the real life tragedy of American soldier, Chris Kyle, who served in theUnited States military as a Navy Seal, which is an elite group (Kenny, 2014 and Treitschke,2015). His story is unique in that he himself suffered from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder(PTSD), but as he worked to recover, he valiantly served again by helping fellow soldiers withPTSD ("Chris Kyle," 2013), and was senselessly gunned
Football has been defined as one of the most competitive sports in the world. There are many different levels of playing, such as flag, high school, college, and professional. Where most of the rules stay the same no matter what stage of playing you are at, some things do change. When coaching in flag football for little kids you won’t be making money, the players aren’t recruited, and you don’t have a set number of players for your team. When playing n college and in the National Football League (NFL) all of those things come into play.
Football is a game of adversity and emotion. People who have not played a sport or follow one closely don’t understand the emotion behind game. They think that football is just a game, but for those who are involved with the team don’t think so. All those horrendous hours of countless preparation are for something players and coaches love. About a few years ago, a football player at the collegiate level was told that he wouldn’t be able to play another down of football again due to his banged up h...
First of all, the rules of football require one to equip himself with approximately twenty pounds of equipment, including a helmet, shoulder pads, and girdle pads. This is because football has the most contact involved out of all sports. In a football game, the norm is that the home team wears colorful jerseys and the visiting team wears white jerseys. Moreover, if a team’s offense is on the field, their defense is on the sideline. A team’s offense includes a center, who snaps the ball to the quarterback. The “QB” then has a choice to run with the ball, hand it off to a running back, or throw it to a wide receiver. The quarterback has an offensive line to protect him from the assailing defense. If a teammate happens to score a touchdown, he earns his team six points, which allows for the kicker to kick an extra point, and give his team a total of seven points. However, if the offense fails to travel at least ten yards within four attempts, or “downs,” they have the opti...
In the modern day United States the sport American football has become not only entertainment but also a tradition whether it’s watching the BCS college championship or watching the super bowl with the family. The sport of American football is unique to the United States and has grown and became iconic over the years and has become a part of many Americans lives. American Football was made in 1869 and was modeled after the sport of rugby. They took the basics of rugby and changed it to make it fit better for them. The game has changed over the years but it also affected many Americans as the tradition of Monday Night football has begun. The game has had problems with the United States government as it was said to be too dangerous to play, this lead to an upgrade in the equipment and they tried very hard to make the equipment well ensuring player safety throughout the sport.
‘Our interest in the parallels between the adaptation inter-texts is further enhanced by consideration of their marked differences in textual form,’

The training and practices required to play professional football are intense. You have to wear uncomfortable pads and helmets and endure grueling practices in the heat of the summer and you have to lift weights every day (Green 174). You have to train no matter what position you play. What’s important about is how the position works and how it contributes to the game.
