The model minority thesis is shown to be one of the main connections between American social policy and Asian Pacific Americans. The model minority thesis came to be around 1965 and this was during the time of the Civil Rights Movement where people tried to stop and take out institutional racial discrimination that was taking place in the United States. During the period of the 1960s-1907s, ethnic groups were feeling that they were being racially discriminated such as African Americans, Latinos, etc. Asian Americans were also part of the groups being discriminated but they were making it out successful during this time of discrimination. The model minority thesis essentially claims that even though Asian Pacific Americans were racially discriminated, they overcame those barriers of prejudice and found success in American society.
They succeeded because they worked hard, were well educated, and took the initiative while not complaining that they were mistreated by white Americans. They also didn’t seek for affirmative action programs, welfare, or assistance for finding jobs but, were pushing themselves to succeed on their own. Asian Pacific Americans were succeeding without any type of uprising of militancy, so white Americans through the support of this thesis believed that other ethnic groups could do the same and find success like the Asian Pacific Americans. White Americans even took into account how Asian Pacific Americans were pushovers and obedient in the workplace and how they were great in math. Through this belief, the American economic and political system sought out the belief of a “color-blind” system that if specific groups couldn’t achieve political equality or rise in the socioeconomic ladder, they were to only blame
themselves. Although these remarks of the model minority thesis are positive in the success of Asian Americans during times of the discrimination, many third and fourth generation Asian Pacific Americans saw that “the model minority” image to be stereotypical and offensive. It overshadowed that since Asian Americans got past through discrimination without any resources then they don’t need any help from the government at all such as food stamps and affirmative action programs. If one accepts this theory, they overlook the institutionalized racism that Asian Pacific Americans and other ethnic groups went through as they will perceive that no matter what situation, any one person can succeed if they just work hard and persevere through discrimination. Not every Asian American follows this model minority thesis because the thesis tries to put everyone into a certain category and give them the same experiences and traits. Certain examples of how Asian Americans can go against the model minority thesis is that numerous Asian Pacific Americans living in the United States receive and continue to receive government assistance in order to live day to day. Not all Asian Americans can be successful in school and that even includes being successful in mathematics. Numerous Asian Pacific Americans fought against the government by participating in a political protest. Some Asian Americans also prefer playing sports than just sitting inside and facing a computer screen. A great example of this is Jeremy Lin who goes against the model minority and is a famous NBA star. People need to see that the model minority thesis is a barrier that can stop an individual from being whom they want to be because they believe that the thesis is what society expects them to be. The model minority thesis holds certain groups such as Asian Americans to a certain standard but it is up to the individuals in society to break these labels and create a name for themselves and accept who they are as individuals even if it doesn’t align with the model minority thesis.
In Ronald Takaki’s book “A Different Mirror” it appeared that anytime race relations changed for the better can be traced back to a historical event. Whether it was war or economics the only time policy changed for the minority groups was because it benefitted the people in power or white society. Ta-Nehisi Coates has also stated that changes for minorities will only come when absolutely necessary for those who are in power. Why does it take war or a cataclysmic economic downturn before people see the appalling way minorities are treated? Is it the “It ain’t broke, so don’t fix it” mentality or do people in this day and age still believe that people of color are inferior to white people? In article “The Problem with Serial and the Model Minority Myth” writer, Julia Carrie Wong, claims that “In Episode 8, it becomes clear that Koenig is deploying another classic racial trope— that of the “model minority.” A sum up of this term “model minority” is when people fill up the stereotype image that is put on their race. Koenig has done a great job to represent each important person without (stereotyping.) Asian Americans are believed to benefit from astounding achievements in education, rising occupational statuses, increasing income, and are problem-fee in mental health and crime. The idea of Asian Americans as a model minority has become the central theme in media portrayal of Asian Americans since the middle 1960s. The term model minority is given to a minority group that exhibits middle class characteristics, and attains some measure of success on its own without special programs or welfare. American minorities made up a significant amount of America’s population in the 1920s and 1930s, estimated to be around 11.9 million people, according to . However, even with all those people, there still was harsh segregation going on. Caucasians made African-Americans work for them as slaves, farmers, babysitters, and many other things in that line. Then when World War II came, “World War II required the reunification and mobilization of Americans as never before” (Module2). They needed to cooperate on many things, even if they didn’t want to. These minorities mainly refer to African, Asian, and Mexican-Americans. They all suffered much pain as they were treated as if they weren’t even human beings. They were separated, looked down upon, and wasn’t given much respect because they had a different culture or their skin color was different. However, the lives of American minorities changed forever as World War 2 impacted them significantly with segregation problems, socially, and in their working lives, both at that time and for generations after.

They feel the need to embody and assimilate to whiteness because the white race has a voice and is seen, rather than silenced and unseen, in society. The Asian Americans formed the large chunk of their labor but because of immigration issues they were restricted due to xenophobia and culture change. In addition to discriminating against Asians, what most people don’t realize is that they are discriminating against the other ethnic groups too, thus creating interracial tension. When one superficially praises the success of one group, they are indirectly bringing out the failures of the other group. For example, when comparing Blacks, Hispanics or Native Americans to Asian American success, they are disregarding the fact that Blacks, Hispanics or Native Americans can be successful too. The model minority myth also creates an exaggerated portrayal of Asian students as hard working, studious, and persevering, which can lead to Asian American students being bullied by their fellow peers.
In the beginning when Asians came to America, they had started out with nothing, no foundation, and no help. All they could do was work hard to create a better life with their own hands, someday, in the hope that they will succeed. Back in the 1800’s, during the gold rush days, Americans were displeased with the amount of Asian immigrants who came and took their jobs. Since then, Asians have been able to survive and achieve a great amount of success in the US. In order to catch up with the rest of the world, the government created an example for their own people, known as the model minority.
The United States of America is the place of opportunity and fortune. “Many immigrants hoped to achieve this in the United States and similar to other immigrants many people from the Asian Pacific region hoped to make their fortune. They planned to either return to their homelands or build a home in their new country (Spring, 2013).” For this reason, life became very complicated for these people. They faced many challenges in this new country, such as: classifying them in terms of race and ethnicity, denying them the right to become naturalized citizens, and rejecting them the right of equal educational opportunities within the school systems. “This combination of racism and economic exploitation resulted in the educational policies to deny Asians schooling or provide them with segregated schooling (Spring, 2013).”This was not the country of opportunity and fortune as many believed. It was the country of struggle and hardship. Similarly, like many other immigrants, Asian Americans had the determination to overcome these obstacles that they faced to prove that the United States was indeed their home too.
In this paper I will be sharing information I had gathered involving two students that were interviewed regarding education and their racial status of being an Asian-American. I will examine these subjects’ experiences as an Asian-American through the education they had experienced throughout their entire lives. I will also be relating and analyzing their experiences through the various concepts we had learned and discussed in class so far. Both of these individuals have experiences regarding their education that have similarities and differences.
The education system is arguably the most beneficial system in the world; however, it also contains many controversial practices. Proper funding, discrimination, and curriculum are just some of the problems in today’s education system. Everyone has a different opinion about what is best for our children and it is impossible to please everyone. As long as the educational system is in tact, then there will be confusion and debate within the system and its’ administrators. The only thing that can be done is attempting to make it so that everyone will benefit equally, but this is much more difficult than one would assume. I will focus on the aspect of discrimination on minorities within special education and more specifically the following questions: Does the special education system discriminate against minorities? If so, how? What can be done, if anything, to correct or improve this system?
For those Asian Americans who make known their discontent with the injustice and discrimination that they feel, in the white culture, this translates to attacking American superiority and initiating insecurities. For Mura, a writer who dared to question why an Asian American was not allowed to audition for an Asian American role, his punishment was “the ostracism and demonization that ensued. In essence, he was shunned” (Hongo 4) by the white people who could not believe that he would attack their superior American ways. According to writers such as Frank Chin and the rest of the “Aiiieeeee!” group, the Americans have dictated Asian culture and created a perception as “nice and quiet” (Chin 1972, 18), “mama’s boys and crybabies” without “a man in all [the] males.” (Chin 1972, 24). This has become the belief of the proceeding generations of Asian Americans and therefore manifested these stereotypes.
