While it may be easier to persuade yourself that Boo’s published stories are works of fiction, her writings of the slums that surround the luxury hotels of Mumbai’s airport are very, very real. Katherine Boo’s book “Behind the Beautiful Forevers – Life, Death, and Hope in a Mumbai Undercity” does not attempt to solve problems or be an expert on social policy; instead, Boo provides the reader with an objective window into the battles between extremities of wealth and poverty. “Behind the Beautiful Forevers,” then, exposes the paucity and corruption prevalent within India.
In “The Biopower of Beauty: Humanitarian Imperialism and Global Feminism in an Age of Terror,” Mimi Thi Nguyen argues that beauty as a measure of moral character functions to regulate an individual. Nguyen explains that beauty promises to be redemptive and bring an individual from the outside in relation with the world(362). For example, the United States through nongoverenmental orgainizations (NGO’s), have promoted beauty to Afghanistan women because it is a way if liberating them from an uncivilized barbaric society that oppresses them to hide their beauty through the veil. According to Kant, the veil is considered ugly because it hides the body, which is associated with the erotic. Kant claims that beauty made visible is true and good, while the invisible is ugly and erotic (266). Nguyen claims using Kant that beauty is connected to morality because it makes visible what the “ugly” is trying to hide by providing a pathway in which beauty can improve ones life. Nguyen asserts that individuals use beauty as a serious of techniques to produce knowledge and emotions that function to portray the individual with dignity in comparison to the “ugly”. Thus, the use of beauty as an educational tool that measures their character is an important factor in teaching women to associate themselves with the rest of the world.
The media can impact people’s lives in many ways, whether it’s fashion, movies, literature, or hobbies. One of the impacts is how women view their bodies. Movie stars and models feel pressured to catch attention and to look good in order to have a good career in their respective field. People tend to judge how someone looks based on their body composition. The result of this “judgment” is that Hollywood is getting skinny. Since models and actresses serve as role models for people, people tend to want to look like them. The result of this seemingly harmless model of behavior is in an increase in eating disorders.
Operation Beautiful is the pride and joy of Plano Senior High School’s Student Council. Hours and hours of thinking brought them to the conclusion that to celebrate inner beauty one must remove all extremities that girls apply on their face every morning, more commonly known as makeup. On the day of Operation Beautiful, all girls wishing to participate in the festivities shall arrive to school with no artificial products or even natural products on their faces. I, for one, completely agree with the concept, after all, one must often take a step back in order to take two steps forward. We should not have to rely on makeup to make us appear more beautiful than is natural. I get the idea from the most beautiful planet in our solar system. Earth itself! Our Earth is covered with beautiful untouched forests, rolling hills and snowcapped mountains. And people should be expected to emulate the same purity and naturalness.

Schiller takes the position that his age is lacking something, meaning that it is missing a certain something that is essential for all human beings. In other words, the "part’’ is missing the "whole’’. Friedrich Schiller on the Sixth Letter of his text "On the Aesthetic Education of Man in a Series of Letters’’ gives an example of a culture, which was not wanting. This culture, the Hellenic Greeks, seemed to manage a perfect balance between art and wisdom, and their connection to nature, for they realized art and wisdom were not something of their own that detached them from nature, but that they were the road itself, which one had to take to find his way towards nature. Schiller states this differently. "For they were wedded [the Greeks] to all the delights of art and all the dignity of wisdom, without however, like us, falling a prey to their seduction’’ (31). Schiller believes that not only do these parts of human nature come together to create a better society but they mesh through art to connect man's soul and mind. Schiller’s philosophical fascination with aesthetics goes beyond a critic of art or even a philosophical discussion of the Beautiful or the Sublime; Schiller seems to be concerned with Man’s realization of freedom and of himself. Schiller fails to provide a clear analysis of the relationship between the beautiful and the sublime. His writings may allow the read to conceive the aesthetic merely as a means to a higher end, the moral state. Meaning that instead of regarding the aesthetic education as an end in itself, he invokes man to use aesthetics to try to reach the ideal. The sociocultural approach to the issue of body image among women states that women receive harmful and negative cultural messages about their bodies. These messages can come from the media as well as from family and peer influences (Swami, 2015). By promoting the thin ideal for attractiveness, the media contributes to women rating their bodies more negatively and thus increases their likelihood of developing eating disorder symptoms (Spitzer, Henderson & Zivian, 1999). Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. In our society today, people would rather see what celebrities are up to than what is going on with our health plan. Watching the news makes us aware of the latest trend, new gadget, who’s in rehab, or who has an eating disorder. In the eyes of society, women like Eva Longoria, Kim Kardashian, and Megan Fox are the epitome of perfection. What girl wouldn’t want to look like them? Unfortunately, this includes most of the girls in the US. Through TV shows, commercials, magazines or any form of advertising, the media enforces a certain body type which women emulate. The media has created a puissant social system where everyone must obtain a thin waist and large breasts. As a society, we are so image obsessed with the approval of being thin and disapproval of being overweight, that it is affecting the health of most women. Women much rather try to fit the social acceptance of being thin by focusing on unrealistic body images which causes them to have lower self esteem and are more likely to fall prey to eating disorders, The media has a dangerous influence on the women’s health in the United States.
In this age, media is more pervasive than ever, with people constantly processing some form of entertainment, advertisement or information. In each of these outlets there exists an idealized standard of beauty, statistically shown to effect the consumer’s reflection of themselves. The common portrayal of women’s bodies in the media has shown to have a negative impact on women and girls. As the audience sees these images, an expectation is made of what is normal. This norm does not correspond to the realistic average of the audience. Failing to achieve this isolates the individual, and is particularly psychologically harmful to women. Though men are also shown to also be effected negatively by low self-esteem from the media, there remains a gap as the value of appearance is seen of greater significance to women, with a booming cosmetic industry, majority of the fashion world, and the marketing of diet products and programs specifically targeting women.
Forty-two participants were exposed, on two repeated occasions, to magazine images representing the thin-ideal physique and overweight models. Body satisfaction was recorded both before and after exposure to the images and eating disorder symptomatology was measured following both exposures. Results showed that participants' body satisfaction scores decreased following exposure to the thin-ideal physique and increased following exposure to the larger models. When analyzing eating disorder symptomatology, body dissatisfaction and drive for thinness were higher following exposure to slender media images compared to the larger media images. In our continued reading of Behind the Beautiful Forevers, we have seen a number of problem’s continually plague Annawadi, however the one that still sticks out to me as holding the people of Annawadi back from having consistent life improvement is the persistence of corruption. Just analyzing events in this part alone, Manju is worried about being able to obtain a well paying teaching job, despite being on path to obtain a B.A. and a B.Ed, simply because almost no one gets a well paying teaching job without “paying enormous bribes to education officials. ” We also see police both chalk up a number of death’s to “illness” without doing any form of proper autopsy, a common practice in the area. After extensively researching the topic and taking notes on the information that was presented in “An Intervention for the Negative Influence of Media on Body Esteem,” it was questioned whether or not exposing myths about female portrayal in the media can increase how satisfied a woman is with her body. As the media shows being thin as being perfect, women begin to eat unhealthy or develop unhealthy eating habits such as fasting or purging. In a short study conducted by Fister and Smith (2004), a strong correlation was found between eating disorder habits and actually thinking the result will be the ideal thinness portrayed in the media. In addition to this, edited pictures in the media can lead women to depression and lowered self-esteem (Haas, et al, 2012). However, when high risk females were shown images of average, normal models prior to being exposed to the models shown in the media today, they were determined to be less likely to try to become thinner. In “An Intervention for the Negative Influence of Media on Body Esteem,” three studies were done to observe the impact exposure of realities have on women. The first study hypothesized interventions before media exposure would lead to fewer comparisons between the participants and the models.
