The articles for this week relates to sex and gender and politics. The first article is The Invention of Bad Gay Sex by Scott De Orio. This article focuses on the history of lesbian and gay rights. The article especially focuses on gay rights history in the context of Texas and the 2003 decision by the Supreme Court of the United States in Lawrence v. Texas which nullified all remaining sodomy laws in the United States. The research looks at how the court case changed sexual rights for gay people. The De Orio article talks about the history of sex and how it used to be heavily restricted and illegal for both homosexual and heterosexual men. The article also talks about the ideas of sodomy as an illegal sexual act being fought against by famous social researcher Alfred Kinsey. In his book In Sexual Behavior in the Human Male Kinsey talked about how the law was designed to protect people and proper and if that basically if the sexual act between two consenting adults wasn’t hurting anyone that the only interest to maintain the laws that controlled sexual behavior. Termini Miranda Lee talks about the female contraception pill plan B. The article gives a brief history when the FDA first submitted approval for female contraceptive. With talks about using the contraceptive going back to 1956 with a supreme court decision that lead to the FDA approving the pill but only for severing menstrual disorder. This did lead to eventually legalization approval of birth control as a contraceptive in the 1960s. The article also goes into how the FDA approved Plan B for prescription use without age limitations in the United States in 1999. It also talks about different science facts and misconception of the Plan B pill. Such as how Plan B like other contraceptives helps prevent pregnancy with about an 89 percent success rate decreasing after a few days if not used. It talks about the common miss conception of people confusing the Plan B pill with the French Pill. With the French Pill be used to induce abortion while Plan be is only effective to at preventing pregnancy. The research article also about the history of Plan B for over the counter use. Which approved by the FDA in the early 2000s to allow easier access to the people.
