The book that I read over the summer, The Face on the Milk Carton, was a book that shows a girl’s determination to solve a mystery. The author of this book is Caroline B. Cooney, the book was published in 1990. The Face on the Milk Carton is categorized as a mystery book. The Face on the Milk Carton is a book that shows mystery, suspense, and most of all determination.
This book shows mystery because of the fact that Janie looks on her friend’s milk carton that displays a picture of her when she was little. At first she wasn’t so concerned as she thought it was a different girl on the carton. She took the milk carton home with her to investigate more. As she looked at the carton she got more and more confident it was her on the carton. She couldn’t picture her parents kidnapping her because they were so loving and nice to her. I think that Janie should have just confronted her parents as soon as it happened so she didn’t keep thinking about it. Janie could have avoided more pain mentally by telling her parents then.
This novel includes suspense in many ways. First it shows Janie and her close friend and neighbor, Reeve, hanging out a lot. Eventually a close friendship turns into them dating. The suspense in that is the thought that they may break up or get

married. Another example of suspense is whether it is her on the milk carton or not. This is the main suspense in this book. The fact that her parents could be kidnappers is making Janie very nervous and scared. This book, most definitely, shows determination.
Janie is faced with a mystery and she chooses to solve it all by herself. The determination helps her find the dress she was wearing in the picture on the milk carton and also a name that was called Hannah. Janie confronts her parents, finally, about the dress and the name Hannah. Her parents say that Hannah was their child and that they were her grandparents. Janie believes them at first but slowly gets more doubtful. Eventually she thinks that Hannah, who is her supposed mother, kidnapped her and gave her to her parents and did not tell them. I think that Janie made the right decision by confronting her parents, however, I think she should have done it
earlier. As I said this book shows mystery, suspense, and determination. It shows mystery by Janie not knowing who her parents are. It shows suspense by the audience not knowing what is going to come next. Finally, it shows determination by Janie not giving up on solving the mystery. I think that overall Janie made very good decisions and showed very good hope. Janie is a very good role-model.
..., she found her identity. It did not come easy for Janie. It took her years to find out who she really was.
Mystery is just a precursor to suspense. Suspense is used in several places throughout the story. One, when Rainsford is standing at the door seeing a giant standing there silent, this makes the reader wonder what will happen next. Two, when Zaroff is talking to Rainsford about the most dangerous game. This fools the reader and Rainsford about Zaroffs intentions towards Rainsford, and it makes the reader want to keep reading. Last, Rainsfords dilemmas keep the reader in suspense. The reader wonders how he will get himself out of his predicaments.
Identity is something every human quests for. Individuals tend to manipulate views, ideas, and prerogative. Janie's identity became clay in her family and friends hands. Most noteworthy was Janie's grandmother, Nanny. Janie blossomed into a young woman with an open mind and embryonic perspective on life. Being a young, willing, and full of life, Janie made the "fatal mistake" of becoming involved in the follies of an infatuation with the opposite sex. With this phase in Janie's life Nanny's first strong hold on Janie's neck flexed its grip. Preoccupation with romantic love took the backseat to Nanny's stern view on settling down with someone with financial stability. Hence, Janie's identity went through its first of many transformations. She fought within her self, torn between her adolescent sanction and Nanny's harsh limitations, but final gave way and became a cast of Nanny's reformation.
In the beginning of the story, Janie is stifled and does not truly reveal her identity. When caught kissing Johnny Taylor, a local boy, her nanny marries her off to Logan Killicks. While with Killicks, the reader never learns who the real Janie is. Janie does not make any decisions for herself and displays no personality. Janie takes a brave leap by leaving Killicks for Jody Starks. Starks is a smooth talking power hungry man who never allows Janie express her real self. The Eatonville community views Janie as the typical woman who tends to her husband and their house. Janie does not want to be accepted into the society as the average wife. Before Jody dies, Janie is able to let her suppressed anger out.
Unfortunately, however, after years of a happy marriage, Janie accidentally kills her husband during an argument. Her town forces her not only to deal with the grief, but to prove her innocence to a jury. Enduring and overcoming her three husbands and forty years of life experiences, Janie looks within herself to find and use her long hidden, but courageous voice.
More than once was Janie betrayed; the main character from Their Eyes Were Watching God tells her life story to her friend and explains the things that were not so good in her life. Many people through the course of her life betray her, most recognizably she is constantly the talk of her town, and some townspeople that are jealous are the mouth of that gossip. They talk about her behind her back to make themselves more assured that she is not better than them.
In the end, Janie found herself being defined by other people, so to say Logan, Joe, and Tea Cake. During her marriage to Logan, Janie is viewed as a spoiled and non-hard working girl that needs to learn what it means to make a living. In her marriage to Joe, Janie is only needed for her outward appearance for him to define as his possession; never did he consult her about what she wanted. In both of these relationships she was forced to be something that she was not. Once Tea Cake came along everything had changed; going from following another man’s orders to being able to live a fun-loving life. Throughout the time she spends with him, finally free from being defined by someone else, Janie Crawford discovers who she is and what love is.
Janie seemed to appreciate small gestures from Joe and admire his every move, was this because he saved her from Logan or because she really loved him? Maybe the two put together was enough for Janie to at least feel loved, as she knew how terrible it was to be with Logan. She has a hard time excepting Joe’s flamboyant and jealousy. Janie has to wear a head rag to cover her hair for all the town people admired it. Joe was demanding, Janie didn’t have to work any longer but she had to be obedient to Joe. She tried to speak her opinion many times, but was shot down. Joe felt that giving Janie money and status was everything, “I built a whole town for us. But that ain 't good enough for you” Janie knowing not better, just yet, had agreed with him. The transformation of Janie in this relationship comes as Joe strikes her for preparing his dinner incorrectly and as he lays on his death bed she finally voices her thoughts freely “even now, you got to die with me being obedient, instead of just letting me love you”, Janie is finally realizing that loving someone cannot change who they are, she never had to accept that just because he was a provider for them. Joe’s definition of love grew so different from Janie’s , Janie comes to a conclusion that she wants acceptance and love, not money and the title
Suspense; Suspense is the intense feeling that an audience goes through while waiting for the outcome of certain events. It basically leaves the reader holding their breath and wanting more information. The amount of intensity in a suspenseful moment is why it is hard to put a book down. Without suspense, a reader would lose interest quickly in any story because there is nothing that is making the reader ask, “What’s going to happen next?” In writing, there has to be a series of events that leads to a climax that captivates the audience and makes them tense and anxious to know what is going to happen. And Suspense, is what “August heat” primarily uses to keep its story so invigorating.
Janie is a seventeen year old from a broken home, and is burdened and gifted by her power. She is sucked into the dreams of others, and this power is found so valuable to one police chief who hires her as an undercover detective. The burden of this power slowly cripples her, but she knows her power should be used for good no matter the cost.
Later that day she goes over to her friends house Reeve (neighbor), and helps him rake leaves. She has always liked him, and they have always been close. He then leans in and kisses her out of nowhere. After this, he runs off inside and leaves her outside in the pile of leaves. She then sleeps everything off and wakes up the next morning. She then has the idea to skip school. So, Janie and Reeve decide to skip school and drive to New Jersey. New Jersey was where she was taken/kidnapped from the mall. She then realizes that she must have been kidnapped from another family, because no one in her family (her mom or grandparents) has that kind of red hair. So she looks up the last name that she had on the missing child poster. She then finds out who her real family is and tries to see them in New Jersey, but she has mixed feelings again. One side of her is saying that they haven’t seen their baby in close to 12 years and need to see her. The other half of her is thinking, they probably moved on and besides I already have grown a bond with my “grandparents.” Having those mixed thoughts, she decides that she is going to write a letter to her real “family.” She writes the letter and then loses it.And as if it wasn’t bad enough, she lost it at school. So on top of the fact that someone might just go mail it for her, there was also a possibility for her business to be spread across the school
The growth of the Janie has experienced three times in her marriage, Janie gradually got rid of all sorts of obstacles to its implementation ego strength, she was from a pure cowardice little girl growing into a mature woman with feminist consciousness. Even though their eyes were watching god, however the story implied that the black women gradually know themselves, grasp myself, and become a master of their own fate, they do not need to rely on others for the survival. From the novel, we can clearly realize that this novel is a tribute to the female image, and finally they have been holding on to defeat fate, which is arranged beforehand, and they won and become the masters of their
Suspense is a powerful tool used by writers to engage readers and create more impactful climaxes and endings. Similarly, Jackson uses objective point
Janie also learns how to value and love herself as a person. She demonstrates this by having the courage to shoot Teacake towards the end. Given the few seconds she had left to decide whether she was going to live or die, she chose live which demonstrates Janie learning to love herself.
The suspense is created by the different characters and many mysterious setting. In this story suspense is presented in a way to keep the reader engaged in the story. The main suspense begins with Helen Stoner telling her story to Sherlock Holmes. Helen told Holmes about the mysterious and strange events that occurred. The events such as, whistling in the middle of the night, as well as her sister’s mysterious death. Doyle describing the dark bedroom that Watson spend the night in, made the reader feel the suspense as if they were in the same room. He uses descriptions such as “...This is very interesting. You can see now that it is fastened to a hook just above where the little opening for the ventilator is” as well as “Holmes as we sat together in the gathering darkness” (Conan Doyle) made the reader more engaged into the story. Foreshadowing is also created in the story to give clues that suggest events that will occur later in the story. Foreshadowing is seemed to be seen when the pole rope was connected to a ventilator and the ventilator went to the next room. The poisonous snake was the weapon used to kill the daughter, by traveling through the
