I’m reading Gym Candy. It is a book about football. This book is about a young boy named Mick is and his dad was a pro football running back. Mick would always talk about his dad and brag about how good he was and how he stopped because he blew out his knee. Well the truth came out and his dad wasn’t taking it seriously. Well now Mick is in high school and is on varsity as a starting running back. The team had just got a new coach and is weight training in the off- season. Well Mick is not progressing and is wanting to go to a different gym. Well his dad is sponsoring a gym called Popeye's and can get him a membership. So now mick has been going there and isn’t progressing and his trainer told him about gym candy, and now he is progressing.
Mick is making his personal goals every day. I think that it’s good for Mick but I don’t think he’ll stop. I think he should and do it without the help of steroids. It say’s “ I’m very mad because I have to stop because of the side effects”.
Cake Pop Crush is a great book. Especially if you like baking. Here is the summary for this great book. Ali Ramirez knows that baking is in her blood. For as long as she can remember, she’s spent every afternoon helping her father in their family bakery, Say It With Flour. But when Perk Up, a hugely successful coffeehouse, opens up across the street from their bakery, it means trouble. Perk Up’s baked goods are trendy and delish, and Say It With Flour just can’t compete. But then Ali convinces her dad to try cake pops in the bakery and they’re a huge hit. There’s only one problem: Dane McGuire. He’s cute, smart, and as the son of Perk Up’s CEO, he’s her biggest rival. Ali can’t stand him, especially when she discovers that he’s making cake pops for Perk Up that are outselling hers by the dozens. Ali knows the only way to save Say It With Flour is to outbake Dane at any cost. Dane swears he’s not her enemy, though, and sometimes he can be disarmingly sweet. But if Ali loses her heart to Dane, will she lose her beloved bakery as well? In this essay i will tell you the theme of this book the internal conflict and what point of view this book is in.
Jack Spencer's dad is tough on him, but Jack's learned to live with it. For the most part, Jack has it pretty good. Then, the unbelievable happens, and bad news leads to worse news. Almost as fast as the crash that put his mom in the hospital, everything that Jack believes in starts to crumble. His only hope is to discover what's really going on, and quickly. If he doesn't, Jack may lose much more than a basketball career.
“If you build it, he will come” (Kinsella 1). These words of an announcer jump start a struggle for Ray Kinsella to ease the tragic life of Shoeless Joe Jackson. Ray hears a voice of an announcer which leads him to build a baseball field that brings Shoeless Joe Jackson onto the field. However, this field puts his family on the verge of bankruptcy which is just one of the struggles Ray Kinsella is presented in his life. Shoeless Joe Jackson is no stranger to having no money, as he was only making a measly $1.25 as a kid struggling to support his family. He never attended school and was illiterate throughout his entire life. The struggle is completely the same with Ray Kinsella growing up, as he is forced into baseball, which ultimately makes him run away from home. Ray’s hate is Joes love. Joe loves baseball and makes it to the major leagues, but it doesn’t last. Joe’s career is cut short due to the fact he is accused of throwing the World Series, and banned from baseball forever. Rays’s father would have loved it if his son made it to the major leagues because he thought Ray had the potential and talent. However, his only dream was simple, he wanted to play a game of catch with his son, unfortunately, he passed away and he never got to see his son after he ran away. Shoeless Joe Jackson’s death wasn’t any better, as he died guilty of throwing the World Series which was the biggest sports tragedy to date. Tragedies are not uncommon phenomena, Ray Kinsella and Shoeless Joe Jackson have the unfortunate luck to go through a struggle fulfilled and uphill battle in what is suppose to be a wonderful thing, life.
Two stories are brought together “A&P” and “Gryphon” to represent the struggles that every character faces. Sammy the main character in “A&P”, and Tommy the main character in “Gryphon” face a struggle that will put them to the test. For Sammy the struggle is, should he stand up to his boss and defend the girls or should he let it go. Tommy faces the conflict of, does he believe the substitute teacher and defend her against everyone else or does he follow what everybody else is doing. In their stories, Tommy and Sammy are put up against a conflict that they have never seen before, and their “job” is to decide what they should do and how they should approach the problem.
A college campus is nothing without a gym. College sports, and cultural events take place in the T.M. Elmore Gym on Alabama A&M’s campus. This gym is located on the west side of A&M’s campus between Louis Crews stadium and Dr. Ernest L. Knight West Campus dorms. This building has made a large impact on the culture of the school considering that the gym is home to sports teams, classrooms, pep rallies, guest speakers and convocations.
Knowles deliberately juxtaposes Gene’s social awkwardness to Finny’s natural athleticism and charisma to suggest an imbalance of power between the two boys. Set in Devon School, described as “very athletic” (Knowles 13), Finny, “an extraordinary athlete…the best athlete in the school,” (16) establishes himself to be popular, tilting the balance of power. Stating there is no one “in this school – in this world – whom [he] could trust” (53), Knowles introduces Gene as a distrustful individual. Gene’s hesitant nature lets the animated Finny take charge of their relationship. To create power imbalance, the author purposefully creates Gene and Finny with wildly different personalities.
¨I lay on my bed, confused and angry. That stuff my dad had said about an ankle injury - it was a lie¨. - pg. 28, Gym candy By. Carl Deuker.
The Overachievers by Alexandra Robbins is a non- fiction book that follows the lives of nine high school/ college overachieving students. On the outside they look healthy, happy, and perfect, but upon closer look the reader realizes just how manic their lives and the lives of many other high scholars are. It is no secret that high school and college has become more competitive, but the public doesn’t realize just out of control this world is. “Overachieverism” has become a way of life, a social norm. It is a world-wide phenomenon that has swamped many of the world’s top countries. Students are breaking under the immense amount of pressure that society puts on them. They live in constant fear that they will not live up to society’s, or their own, standards. People have put so much emphasis on students to succeed and to outperform their peers, and all before them, that it is changing them, and is having irreversible effects on them.
Social psychology is defined as the study of the relationships between people, their community and their environment (King, 2011). People tend to conform to society to feel accepted. However, their circumstances play a role in their capability to conform. For example, people are inclined to wear specific attire to the gym. The typical workout outfit is gym shorts, a t-shirt, and running sneakers, and typically, females put their hair up in a ponytail holder. Wearing anything other than these articles of clothing is abnormal and breaks the social norm.
The gym is a place where a typical American college student goes to work out their bodies. Based on the fact that I personally could be considered a gym rat, a stereotypical name for someone who spends a lot of time in the work out area. This is partially by choice being on the swim team requires the strength training equipment that is available to our disposal in the gym. While I have been to the gym many times I haven’t really taken the time to take in the other people around me. Within this ethnographic exercise I will explore the college gym norms within Roger Williams University.
In the article, “The Pleasure of Eating” by Wendell Berry, Berry was right about the fact that there should be a “Food Politics”. This article talks about “eating responsibly” and “eating agriculturally”. If you haven’t heard of these terms, they vary in Berry’s article. So “Eating responsibly” and “Eating agriculturally” basically means that everyone is expected to see and know about what they are eating. Nonetheless, not all fruits and vegetables are healthy. You might need to spend some time to take a look at the brand, price, and the facts about the products. Imagine, if Berry came to your dinner table? How do you get or purchase your food? What will you serve him? If Berry were to show up to my dinner, the best
I read the realistic fiction novel,Gym Candy by Carl Deuker. The book is told from the point of view of Mick Johnson. Mick has played football since he was four and has always dreamed of being a football star, but when he decides he needs a little “boost” things don’t go as he planned. Mick lives in Seattle with his Mom and Dad. There is a lot to be learned from this story but main lesson I took from it is that cheaters never win. I believe this because if you win your event you still know you cheated and it doesn’t feel good. Another reason is if someone finds out you cheated, you will most likely lose the reward for winning. The other reason is when Mick cheats he harms himself.
discussed the rhetorical skills in the writing styles and analysis. The main components of this learning was to be able to differentiate and understand the ethos, logos, and pathos appeals associated with the particular feeling and help develop understanding. Using the ethos, logos, and pathos appeals the writers and speakers can convince their readers to some image or understanding regarding the group or association. Every one of us is associated with different discourse communities that have different specialties and meaning. Everyone must have to learn the ways the communities interact with their members and how the communities understand a person from outside the community. Being outside from the community there is need to learn regarding
