I chose the story of Schaquana Spears of Baton Rogue, Louisiana. She is the mother of six children who is now facing felony charges because of three of her sons breaking into the home of a neighbor. She disciplined her children for the crime by whipping them with a belt.
There are two sides to the controversy. The mother of the three children and the law. The law says that the mother beat her children with an extension cord. The mother says she used a belt. There is a big difference between an extension cord and a belt. The extension cord sounds worse than the belt.
The prominent figures on each side of this controversy are the mother, the three children, and the law.
The main argument presented by the prominent figures on each side is that

if the mother of the sons who committed the crime should be charged because she disciplined them afterwards. Was the punishment too harsh? A lot of people say that she was being a mother who disciplined her children for a wrongdoing. The district attorney says that she crossed the line because there were visible marks on the children.
It was newsworthy because the mother who disciplined her sons for a crime and now the mother is the one possibly facing felony charges. It is unfair that they arrested the mother and now faces charges for being a parent and being a disciplinarian. The mother lost her job and custody of the children.
I feel that this story is very unfortunate. A mother is already dealing with the fact that her children committed a crime against their neighbor. Then she decides to whip them for doing what they did. Now, she is the one labeled as the enemy. She was only trying to stop her children from making the same mistake again. It’s funny how police can murder teens and get off free, but a mother who has disciplined her children is facing charges. If she had not prior abuse charges then I feel that she was only doing her duty as a mother. Some children need that type of discipline and I commend her, just like the neighbor’s whose home were broken into did
