Tommy is bored by his small town with its “ordinary lesson, complete with vocabulary and drills,” at school (p. 46, l. 137), and his mom not listening about his day, “Did you hear me?...You have chores to do.” (p. 58, l. 477-479) Everyone knows everyone else in Five Oaks. In comes Mrs. Ferenczi talking about things he and his classmates had never heard of before. Things like a half bird-half lion called a Sryphon, Saturn and its mysterious clouds, and sick dogs not drinking from rivers but waiting for rain all in one lesson (p. 55-56, l. 393-403). Ideas never stop coming and they branch out from each other before they are properly explained. Most of the kids feel she lies, but Tommy joins her in …. (Write here about how Tommy begins to make up stories like Mrs. F.) Think of the progression: looks-up “Gryphon” in the dictionary….makes-up “Humpster “ story….”sees” unusual trees on the bus ride home….yells at & fights

Public housing complexes were seen as pleasurable places. When the boys’ mother, LaJoe, first moved to Horner she was thirteen. The homes had white, freshly painted walls, new linoleum floors, closets you could hide in, and brand new appliances. The children went to dances in the basement, belonged to the girl scouts, and played outside on the playground surrounded by freshly planted grass. This harmonious sight all came to an abrupt end. The housing authority did not have the money or interest to put into the projects. They did not have much concern for low-income families and, therefore, the projects were neglected. The smell in the apartments became so bad that people thought dead fetuses were being flushed down the toilets. The appliances in the apartments hardly ever worked, so cooking was limited. After an inspection of the basement, over 2000 new and used appliances were found covered with rats, animal carcasses and excrements. The dead animals, paraphernalia, and female undergarments explained the smell lingering throughout the apartments.

As "Barn Burning" opens, an adolescent boy named Sartoris Snopes is in court, hoping he will not have to testify in the arson case against his father -- a charge of which Sarty knows Mr. Snopes is absolutely guilty. The judge, whom Sarty perceives as kindly, is nonetheless Sarty’s enemy because he is his father’s enemy, and Sarty has not yet separated himself from his father.
In the short story Barn Burning by William Faulkner, a man by the name of Abner Snopes personifies the struggles within the social class system involving the lower classes attempting to retain and achieve equality with and among the higher classes through the action of burning barns. Snopes tries to gain powers by diminishing the standings of those around him who he considers to be unfairly placed above him class wise. His pyromaniacal tendencies of burning barns represent his efforts to burn down the class structure, alleviate his feelings of inferiority, and work to further give this story meaning by providing a complex yet straightforward conflict.
Adolph Myers, a kind and gentle man "[ is] meant by nature to be a teacher of youth"(215), however, the towns' people can not understand that the male school teacher - a not so common phenomenon at the time--spoke soothingly with his hands and voice only to "carry a dream into the young minds" (215) of his students. The young school teacher was wrongfully accused of doing "unspeakable things" to his students, and as a result was beaten and run out of town without being given a chance to explain the his love for the children was pure, and that he had done nothing wrong. Therefore, as young Adolph Myers, whose only crime is of being a good and caring person runs out of Pennsylvania, old Wing Biddlebaum, the lonely and confused victim of a close-minded society walks into Winesburg Ohio.
In “Barn Burning,” the author, William Faulkner, composes a wonderful story about a poor boy who lives in anxiety, despair, and fear. He introduces us to Colonel Satoris Snopes, or Sarty, a boy who is mature beyond his years. Due to the harsh circumstances of life, Sarty must choose between justice and his family. At a tender age of ten, Sarty starts to believe his integrity will help him make the right choices. His loyalty to family doesn’t allow for him to understand why he warns the De Spain family at such a young age. Faulkner describes how the Snopes family is emotionally conflicted due to Abner’s insecurities, how consequences of a father’s actions can change their lives, and how those choices make Sarty begin his coming of age into adulthood.
”(3) Marie, Jeannette’s mother, completely refuses to take care of her own children. She doesn’t care for her children as any mother should. Any child, even at the age of three, should not be making hotdogs in a hot oven. This act shows how much independence her father has instilled in her.
She explains how her son was just pushed through school. “Our youngest, a world-class charmer, did litter to develop his intellectual talent but always got by” (559). He got through school by being a good kid, he was quiet and didn’t get in trouble. This was how he made it to his senior year until Mrs. Stifter’s English class. Her son sat in the back of the room talking to his friends; and when Mary told her to just move him “believing the embarrassment would get him to settle down” (559) Mrs. Stifter just told her “I don’t move seniors I flunk them” (559). This opened Mary’s eyes that her son would have to actually apply himself to pass. He wouldn’t be handed a passing grade. After the meeting with her son teacher, she told her son if you don’t try you will fail, making him actually apply himself. This made Mary understand that Failure is a form of positive teaching tool. Only because her son had to work for it and, now he actually came out of high school with a form of
In chapter seven of Carl Hiaasen's book flush precise words were used to help the reader connect with the text. In this chapter the main character's dad was interviewed and his mom is thinking of getting a divorce. One example of this is when the author used the word rummaging, instead of looking. It gives you the feel that something is lost. Another example of this is when the word snooped was used instead of sneak. This gives the feel of looking for something instead of just trying not to be seen. Additionally another example is when faint was used, instead of weak. This gives a feel of something not completely useless, but still won't help that much. In this chapter sensory detail helped the reader by connecting them and making them want
Limited minds may ask themselves, “How young is too young, or perhaps how old is too old to change the course of my life?” Never coming to a conclusion, the question dies with them. However, some minds believe in no set age, but instead, that what they do with each day determines the rest of their life; therefore, they live each day with purpose and intent, overcoming obstacles within themselves and within their world. William Faulkner’s story, “Barn Burning,” impersonates the mind that lives each day as an opportunity for growth through the character of Sartoris Snopes. Sartoris Snopes, a scrawny boy disguised by his father’s looks, lives in a surrounding influence of corruption (Faulkner, 7). Susceptible to the influence of his father, a
“Shut up i can talk how ever i want!” Lilly yelled, before she could turn right on the left side of her cheek, Mr. WIlson socked her. She ran down the hall with tears rolling down her face all the way to her bedroom slamming the door before Mr. Wilson could say anything else. She then threw herself on the ground bursting into tears. Laying on the floor she spotted something under her bed which at first seemed like a piece of old bark but it was the Monkey’s paw. Curiosity Lily inspected he paw not knowing the dangers it had caused. She then placed it in her pocket, thinking about how bad life was treating her.
