After reading “Save Higher Education: Toss the Cheaters” by Professor Doom, my position would be neutral. I disagree with him, but also agree with him on some terms. Cheaters are not all looked at the same level and I believe that is one of the biggest factors on why cheating is not enforced. I would have to disagree on the punishment cheaters should face. I do, though, agree that the administrators cut corners to help their institution, and that institutions should not allow cheaters to graduate. Growing up, children witness cheaters all the time. In the article, “A Better Way to Prevent Cheating: Appeal to Fairness,” author David Callahan compared the idea of professors who grade mid-term exams to the role of them playing cops or detectives. The article was about the struggle that a lot of universities are facing with the epidemic of cheating amongst its students. A lot of these colleges and universities have put in play honor codes but they are not being enforced effectively. It talked about how that the students feel that it’s the only way for some of them to succeed, get into the college of their choice or even get the job that they want. Even at the most prestigious schools, such as Harvard University, students are not upholding the rules implemented: “The possibility that 125 Harvard students ‘improperly collaborated’ on an exam in the spring has galvanized … discussion about … honor codes” (Source: C). In this case, people may argue that the only party at fault consists of the students. However, the faculty may be partially guilty as well, as their lack of care towards the rules has created a situation that jeopardizes the school’s integrity. Revision may then seem like the least of the school’s priorities, as they must show they seriously consider educational integrity. Likewise, at the University of Virginia, “157 students have been investigated by their peers in the largest cheating scandal in memory” (Source: D). Again, the school and all those who work there hold at least part of the fault for this ignorance because, theoretically, they should preserve and enforce the rules provided. The fact that the scandal exists means that they were not doing their jobs to their fullest. I would prefer that students don't cheat. Yes, they really are mostly cheating themselves, so fine. But it also reflects poorly on the community. Rationally or not, what particularly irks me is that it is disrespectful: of me, of their fellow students, of the university, of the institution of learning, and of themselves. Anddid I mentionof me? It is particularly irksome when their cheating implies (reminds?) that I am a fool.
In conclusion, cheating is a dishonest action, and its effects could tremendously impact other people around. Alerting authority figures about dishonesty actions can help motivate students to learn the subjects thoroughly and build meaningful life experiences. What amazed me though was the 125 Undergrads from Harvard that got caught cheating. These are the people that supposedly are the brightest and best student in the United States, maybe even the world and they are doing this. Many people would kill to have a spot at Harvard and have that experience, but these people are taking their spots. Yet, this number can be misleading when there are probably 50,000 undergrads at least attending. Most may be doing the right thing. First of all, is it ethical to cheat? That question can not be answered with a simple yes or no, there are more things that come into play such as, what are they cheating on, is it simply cut and pasted or did they make it there own. Cheating is not as big of a deal as people make it out to be, it is just a means to an end. Nothing anyone ever will do, no rules any university would make will change this fact. Cheating has grown more and more of a big problem. Schools need to crack down on it. Its only going to get worse. If the punishments are raised and teacher look for cheating more it will help this problem severely. Cheating is an unfair, disgraceful, and unethical thing to do. It needs to be fixed.
