The State of State Address is a speech delivered by the governor of a state, to inform his or her constituents or citizens on the condition of the state. This speech is delivered in the presence of both houses of the state legislature. The presenter of Michigan's state of state address would be Rick Snyder, Michigan's governor since the year of 2011. This speech, for public relations took place in the house of representative chamber at the capital of Michigan. In Snyders speech for the state of state address, Snyder speak emphatically on the states condition without being discursive or using any details that does not prove the growth of our state that he talks of. His details with his speech helped him articulate his argument of growth. The governor of Michigan, Richard Snyder was elected for the governor seat for Michigan in 2011 he was elected for a second term in 2014. Synder is currently serving his last term as Michigan's governor. Synder will go down into history as the 48th and current governor of Michigan. Through the beginning of his speech Snyder begins to …show more content…
give credit to himself on the upcoming of Michigan's economy. He begins with two quotes from the wall street journal, with one dated to 2009 and another to 2017. The 2009 article had named "The State of Joblessness", which was about Michigan's economy downfall, the 2017 article name had been "The Michigan Comeback Story". This shows that Michigan's economy has flourished under the leadership of Snyder. As Snyder continues on with his speech he begins to expresses the positive effects of his presence in office.
He begins to explain everything in an organized manner with a repetitive theme. From issues to facts over and over again he begins to inform his audience, the people of Michigan, of how schools are being taught college prep more, how more jobs have come to Michigan citizens, safer driving conditions for citizens, and how major cities in Michigan like Detroit have so called improved. But as he goes on into his speech he doesn’t just give credit to himself for all the work that has come to make Michigan thrive again. He continuously sets time aside to raise awareness for the people who have had a hand in this great on the table. All together Snyder's speech format isn't that all of a challenge to understand it is greatly organized to help us understand the change that he says that has
occurred. As stated in the previous paragraph the sentence structure of Snyder's speech is very simple. Hits us with claim and backs it up with details as if he was in a class debate. The first 30 minutes to thee speech speak out the most. This is because he explains the topics that really matter to our economy. School, home value, safer physical and financial plans are released. To sum it up these minutes were the most crucial to the speech. It shows the growth of our state and how much of a good growth we have had over the years. The form and content complement each other because the form helps prove the content that is being presented to us. He approaches us with an informal or serious type tone. this is because a speech like this is strictly about the growth of an economy and what has happened throughout the previous years. The word choice within the speech helps prove the informal tone it shows how and why the speech is informal. There is little to none figurative language in this speech. Which proves the informal tone. In my fully honest opinion I feel Snyder has helped Michigan back to the age of thriving but there are still dark sides to a great economy. For example, the school's system for Detroit which isn't great at all. But it has its school that thrive through the challenges. But I will also to shine the light on the long and tough journey since the year of 2009 when Michigan had been ruled the state of joblessness. Snyder's speech for his last state of state address did show the light side of the economy and how it over powers the dark side.
The structure of a speech is how it is organized. In President Barack Obama’s address to the nation, the structure of his speech is organized into three parts: a sincere opening, the main point, and then a sincere closing. In the opening of his speech, President Obama offers condolences and is sincere to the situation at hand. As he progresses in his speech, he reaches his main point of the need for a more restricted gun control policy. In the body of his speech, he loses some sincerity and focuses on the present situation and how to resolve the issue. Then, he closes his speech the way he began it, by being sincere and reaching out to the ones who were suffering. This particular way of organizing his speech was effective in supporting his argument. By opening his speech in a sincere way, he caught the attention of anyone listening because of his kind words. After he had their attention, he addressed the need to come together as a nation and end the awful violence. Then he ended by offering comfort to families. This specific structure buries the more controversial topic of gun control which causes people to feel more sympathetic making them more willing to listen to his message even if they support the right to bear
In order to grasp the rhetorical situation, one must first understand the correlation between the purpose of the State of the Union Address and the response to the address. Before discussing the response in detail, one needs to know why the State of the Union Address is given. According to the website, This Nation, the intent of the State of the Union Address shall convey a message of what America is striving to become in the form of speech to the citizens. The website defines the State of the Union Address by stating, “ shall from time to time give to the Congress Information of the State of the
The Democratic Party was facing a difficult election in 1984 against an extremely popular president, Ronald Reagan, whom for four years had dominated the political United States. In his “Keynote Address to the Democratic Convention” in 1984, Mario Cuomo, the Italian-American New York governor, addresses the strain a Republican president has put on the nation’s lower and middle classes. He mentions President Reagan’s view of the nation from his “Shining City on a Hill”, a phrase which the President used many times throughout his career to describe the prosperity of America’s upper class. Cuomo challenges President Reagan’s beliefs that America is thriving with allusions to the lives of lower class Americans, and states that the nation is instead
The President starts off reminding the audience of the grave conditions both domestic and overseas. He mentions the war, “We are asking asking Reservists to leave their homes and families for months on end, and servicemen to risk their lives—and four were killed in the last two days in Vietnam.”, and this especially tugs at the heartstrings of Americans who have lost family. He also acknowledges that unions have done their best to lower wage demands. By acknowledging every American's effort, he again aligns himself with the audience to target a single enemy. The audience will feel hear and there will be rallying support for the end of oppression of these steel companies.
To begin, Kennedy gave the exigence and explained what the current situation was in America. He gives his thesis to let the audience know what his feelings are, and what the main point of the speech is going to be. The first sentence discusses the steel companies raising their prices which, “constitutes a wholly unjustifiable and irresponsible defiance of the public interest” (2-3). This sentence sets up the rest of the speech and what can be expected to follow. After giving the exigence and thesis, Kennedy expands on the issue in the paragraphs that proceed. His ideas flow right from one to the next. Beginning with the issues in America, the steel companies raised prices, national security, and finally how it affects Americans.
In his “State of the Union” speech, President Barack Obama effectively uses the rhetorical devices of Ethos, Pathos and Logos to convey a more convincing message to the citizens of the United States to urge them to follow the example of the many people that have made their nation greater.

“Today we are not merely transferring power from one administration to another, or from one party to another – but we are transferring power from Washington, D.C. and giving it back to you, the American People.” With this statement, Trump had set the tone for his entire speech, and exhibits another of his main points in uniting the American people. “Rusted-out factories scattered like tombstones across the landscape of our nation; an education system, flush with cash, but which leaves our young students deprived of knowledge.” Trump’s use of descriptive language, to create vivid imagery for the audience here is one of the most powerful statements he makes in his speech. The emotional response Trump is able to strike in the listener, and the feelings he creates with his appeals to pathos throughout the speech is a big part of what makes this an effective inaugural
Primarily he starts out his address by speaking directly to his audience, the American people. He states: “We know we share this pain with all of the people of our country. This is truly a national loss.” By doing so he establishes who his intended audience is, which is very important in a speech like this. It helps the audience feel a greater connection to the speaker since he is addressing them directly and relating to them.
He mentions the very recent violence that occurred in Selma, Alabama; where African Americans were attacked by police while preparing to march to Montgomery to protest voting rights discrimination. Without mentioning this violent event that occurred a week prior, there would not be much timeliness to his argument, and it wouldn’t have been as effective. The timeliness of his argument gave the speech a lot more meaning, and it heightened the emotions of many who heard the address. He is appealing to the emotions of many American people, both Congressmen and ordinary citizens, to encourage them to support his cause. He reminds us of all of the Americans around the world that are risking their lives for our freedom.

Mayor Mike Duggan has recently added his voice to the many others in regards to asking for state help for Detroit Public Schools. While he observed some schools that were properly maintained, he noted that conditions in some schools would “break your heart” including issues with heating and severe water damage that prevented children from using the gymnasium. Duggan’s tour came to a quick and early end, however. Many schools were closed in early January due to teacher sick-outs as a form of protest to what teachers call “deplorable conditions for them as well as students.” These protests are in direct response to the building conditions, pay cuts, and the recent plan by Governor Snyder. In addition, the school system is projected to run out of funds in April. Duggan encouraged the state to help fix Detroit schools. Of the districts ninety-seven s...
Each speech has its own audience that differs from the other. In the inaugural speech the audience was the public and therefore the speech was short and used short sentences that are easy to understand. On the other hand, the state of union speech’s audience was mostly the Congress members and therefore the language was more specific and filled with political terminology. Both speeches will be discussed in context and using ethos, pathos and logos. First of all, the Inaugural Address was the President Obama’s speech that was delivered to the crowds after the oath of office ceremony that took place at the West Front of the United States.
The fear he brings on by talking about Ebola spreading, the grief brought on by talking of the many murders and awful acts by ISIL terrorists, to the hope he projects be calling for the nations to come together to drive his argument. While some arguments use emotion to deceive readers and keep them from paying attention to the argument, but Obama’s speech does just the opposite. The emotions that are felt bring you closer to his argument and facilitate understanding of what he is saying. Since unfortunately not a great deal of people pay attention to politics, they are not knowledgeable on the issues that have taken place. With the use of emotion, Obama is able to help those understand without them having to know the situation entirely. For example, regarding the ISIL terrorists, Obama states the, “mother, sisters, and daughters have been subjected to rape as a weapon of war. Innocent children have been gunned down.” Now while one may not know the ins and out of all the acts of ISIL, this makes people understand that they are bad and need to be
