“A Sound of Thunder” starts off with a hunter named Eckel’s that goes to a time machine company to get into a time machine on a safari tour guide. This company takes hunters back in time to kill T-Rex’s. They have strict instructions for how the hunters are supposed to act once they travel back in time. Eckel’s is accompanied by two other hunters, their tour guide Travis and his assistant. As they travel in the time machine they eventually land 60,002,50 years back in time where “ Christ isn’t born yet.” (page 290, Ray Bradbury). Travis tells the group, before they get out of the machine, to stay on the path and to not touch anything, or they will alter future life. The pathway floats 6 inches above the ground. In “A Sound of Thunder,” a man named Mr. Eckles travels 65 million years into the past to hunt the most feared animal. While he’s out hunting, Eckles realizes that his prey is too much for him. This realization causes him to break the number one rule of his time travelling experience. Eckles runs off his predetermined and kills a butterfly. This then causes an irreversible chain reaction in history that ultimately leads to Eckles death.
“A Sound of Thunder” is a story by Ray Bradbury about a man named Eckles that wants to hunt something other than regular animals, so him and a group of people travel back in time to hunt dinosaurs. The leader of the group told all of the people to stay on the floating path when they got there so they don’t kill any plants or insects that could change what happens in the future. Eckles got scared when he saw the dinosaur so he went off the path. When the group got back to the present time the group they found out that they had a different president, that was like a dictator. The leader of the group saw that Eckles stepped on a butterfly. After that the leader shot and killed Eckles. Some of the allusion in “A Sound of Thunder” were when Mr. Travis said, “Christ isn’t born yet” (1029), he also says, “Washington might not cross the Delaware, there might never be a United States at all” (1030), and the last allusion is referencing to the butterfly effect.

Ignorance about the nature of those actions does not free a person from responsibility for the consequences.” The fact that someone is unaware about what could happen to them, does not excuse them from what they have done. People should think before they act, especially actions that could harm themselves and other people or things. In “Sun and Shadow," Ray Bradbury manipulates Ricardo to convey to the reader the impertinence from outsiders and the responses from Ricardo and his fellow townspeople. A photographer is encountered doing a photo shoot on Ricardo’s property, and Ricardo becomes unhappy with his presence and angrily tells him to leave. After Ricardo’s increasingly sharp comments and attitudes augment, the photographer becomes satirical and facetious, poking fun at the lifestyle in which Ricardo lives. The short-tempered townsman reveals his defiance through actions projected towards the photographer. Intertextuality is the idea that each literary work can not be independent, but instead grows off of other literary works. This is extremely popular in today's culture, especially in television. Shows like Family Guy and The Simpsons are heavily dependent on it for humor. Usually most of these instances are extremely obvious throughout the shows, but i picked one that may not be as noticeable as the others. In Family Guy's "Road to Germany" episode, Steward and Brian use a time machine to go back to Nazi Germany. Stewart's words before they enter the time machine followed exactly as they were written in Ray Bradbury's "A Sound of Thunder". A Sound of Thunder was written in 1952 by Ray Bradbury. It was set in the year of 2055 during a presidential election. In the story, Eckels and a group of rich men travel back in time to kill a dinosaur. However, after seeing the dinosaur, Eckels cowardly strays off of the important floating path. When the group returns to Time Safari Incorporated, they realize that Eckels has made the terrible mistake of stepping on a prehistoric butterfly. This tiny change to the past not only modifies their present language, but also causes the unwanted candidate, Duetscher, to win the election. (“A Sound of Thunder”, 2005.) This made Travis, the guide, angry because earlier on in the story he warned Eckels that by stepping on one mouse from the past it could possibly lead to the Unites States never even existing in this excerpt:

Many factors in Ray Bradbury’s life had contributed to his style of writing and the themes that he wanted to present to society. Some factors that influenced Bradbury were events such as the Cold War and the writings of other writers such as Edgar Allen Poe. Bradbury’s style of writing was shaped by many factors in his life such as world events, his techniques learned from famous writers, and the progress of society. From life to death Bradbury’s world was always filled with war and government propaganda that attempted to sway the thoughts of citizens about the dangers of foreign threats (Schofelt, Cordon, “Science fiction writer Ray Bradbury: 1920-2012”). Bradbury’s writings were always influenced by the constant reminder of these governments ideology filling his ears. Bradbury’s writing was also influenced by the writings of other writers such as Edgar Allen Poe. His inspiration as a child began with Poe and was forever changed by his style of gothic writing and the morals that Poe always presented to his readers ("Planetary Pariahs: Bradbury and the Influence of Edgar Allan Poe."). Bradbury’s best known works were considered science fiction and always presented a story of the dangers of unchecked technology (Mataconis "Ray Bradbury And The Real Lesson Of Fahrenheit 451."). All these factor into how Bradbury would style his writing and the major themes he presents to his readers.
