In the fall of 2006, six black students asked if they could sit under a specific tree at school that was apparently reserved for only white students. This caused conflict between the students. Later the next day, 3 nooses were hung from that same tree. When the principal of Jena high found out what students were responsible for hanging the nooses, he recommended the students expulsion. Winthrop D. Jordan author of White Over Black: American Attitudes Toward the Negro 1550-1812, expresses two main arguments in explaining why Slavery became an institution. He also focuses attention on the initial discovery of Africans by English. How theories on why Africans had darker complexions and on the peculiarly savage behavior they exhibited. Through out the first two chapters Jordan supports his opinions, with both facts and assumptions. Jordan goes to great length in explaining how the English and early colonialist over centuries stripped the humanity from a people in order to enslave them and justify their actions in doing so. His focus is heavily on attitudes and how those positions worked to create the slave society established in this country.

Another major reason why juveniles are ending up in the juvenile justice system is because many schools have incorporate the zero tolerance policy and other extreme school disciplinary rules. In response to violent incidents in schools, such as the Columbine High School massacre, school disciplinary policies have become increasingly grave. These policies have been enacted at the school, district and state levels with the hopes of ensuring the safety of students and educators. These policies all rely on the zero tolerance policy. While it is understandable that protecting children and teachers is a priority, it is not clear that these strict policies are succeeding in improving the safety in schools.
The Little Rock, Arkansas incident was under the watchful eyes of people worldwide. The white citizens of Little Rock were very defiant and would not let the black students enter the all- white Central High School. The disturbance at Central High School went on for several weeks. The African American students tried to enter the school on several different occasions but each time they were greeted by an angry mob that blocked the entrance to the school.

In the late 1900s, racial tension was considered by society, to be non-existent until James Byrd Jr. was murdered. In 1998, James Byrd Jr, an African American male age of 49 was kidnapped. Byrd was not kidnapped for ransom but for an outcome of death. After leaving a family gathering Byrd was manipulated into getting a ride home from three white men. The three men included John King, Shawn Berry, and Lawrence Brewer, whom “…established ties to racist organizations during previous prison terms.”(Brookfield). The men took an unexpected turn into the deserted country and began the torturing of James Byrd Junior. The men started to severely beat him, and then chained him by his ankles to the back of their pick-up truck. The three men than drove off and dragged him while conscious for three and a half miles. “The driver swerved from side to side to bounce Byrd across the road, the asphalt tore away parts of his body.”(Miller) and when slammed into a channel Byrd was beheaded. The three killers took what was left of him, threw his torso in front of a church and left.

Over the course of this week our lessons began to transition from the explicit discrimination of the past to the current state of segregation and racial tensions, particularly in the St. Louis region. Two of the major issues discussed were hypersegregation and the role it played in the protest movement sparked by the shooting of Michael Brown.
Slavery has existed in one form or another for centuries and in some places in the world it still exists today. In most places slavery is a way of life and there is nothing that can be done about it, and in southern America that was the case too for over three hundred years. During that period many people fought against slavery and tried to get it abolished from the country, but little did they know how long and how brutal the fight would be. Even after slavery was abolished by the thirteenth amendment in 1865, the African American and some European people suffered even harder times than they did during the years of slavery. After slavery was abolished a few years later the Jim Crow laws were introduced in the south, making it nearly impossible for African Americans to live a free life, and these laws would eventually shape the race relations in the south for several years to come. The Jim Crow laws made African Americans second class citizens to the white people of the south. Even though slavery was abolished in the south, these laws made sure that African Americans were not able to enjoy their new found freedom. These laws were implemented by white community to make sure that they kept the power that they once had over the African Americans, because they were afraid of what might happen if they gain power. The white people in the south were successful in doing so for almost eighty years.

The rise of Jim Crow led to increased racial tension. Although Jim Crow was very famous in the South, Jim Crow also took place in the North. As the migration of African-Americans to the North grew stronger, whites looked to segregate public places such as restaurants, hotels, theaters, as well as other public venues (Boyle 78). For example, Ossian Sweet attended Wilberforce University, which was right outside of Xenia, Ohio. The city had once been proud of this college that was for African-Americans but now due to the rise of Jim Crow, they refused to let the college use any of the town’s facilities or services (Boyle 79). This is just one example of how whites segregated from African-Americans. Another place where segregation occurred was in schools. The Plessy v. Ferguson decision ruled that there could be segregation if the segregated facilities were equal. Segregated schools were very popular in the South but also took place in the North. The problem with this was that the schools were nowhere near equal. African-Americans had very poor school facilities and materials, so they were not getting the same education as the white children, which continued the superiority of the white race.
