For Phil Davidson to have a better chance of winning when he next runs for Star County Public Office, he must improve his public speaking abilities. Some improvements he should make include implementing clear preview and transition statements, providing more organization, and adjusting his delivery style. A few recommendations on how Phil should go about improving his speech giving skills include practicing frequently before giving his speech, allowing others to look over his speech, and writing clear previews as well as transitions and using either note cards or highlighting to remember them.
First, Phil must clearly state his previews and transitions in any future speeches. While there may have been some effort to provide transitions in this speech, there seems to be no preview statement at all. For the audience to follow what Phil is talking about, he should have preview somewhat. Towards the end of the video there may be an attempt at a preview. He states “If nominated tonight I want to campaign for Star County’s greatest strength-its people.” If this is indeed a preview statement, I recommend he adds to it, as well as stating it more towards the beginning of his speech. Also, the transition statements are lacking. He doesn’t seem to transition as he goes from idea to

idea; he just allows himself to talk while not cueing the audience when he is finished with one idea. I recommend for Phil to have a way to cue himself when he needs to transition, such a s writing main points and transitions on note cards and highlighting the transitions. Next, Phil must have more organization with his main points if his wishes to get his political career back on track.
There is not much of an order to the ideas in Phil’s speech. While the overall idea seems to be that he will win and “restore” the treasurer’s office if he is nominated, he doesn’t explain how. I recommend that he outline his speech before writing. Not only will that provide a guide for when he gives the speech, but it will help to organize his ideas and give him more clarity while writing. Also to improve the order of his speech, he should allow at least one other person to read over it, as others can catch mistakes and disorganization more easily than the writer
themself. Finally, Phil must make corrections to his overall delivery style if he wishes to make a better impression with the Star County Republican Party Executive Committee. Some flaws in his delivery style were lack of consistent eye contact, both his volume and tone, and well a his overall energy. To go into greater detail, he frequently looks at his notes, even pausing for seconds at a time to get an idea of what he will say next. Also, he had inappropriate tone and volume even at the start of his speech. He is yelling throughout most of his speech, and has almost an angry tone. He even states “I will not apologize for my tone tonight”, with a raised voice. Finally, Phil is very energetic. He begins pacing back and forth in a short area around the podium, as well as the excessive volume he uses. While caring about the topic of a speech is beneficial, he is overly emotional. I recommend he practices a great deal before his next speech, Practice will improve his delivery style by advancing his eye contact, as he will better know the information he is presenting, as well as allowing him to not be as emotional in his delivery. In conclusion, Phil must make many improvements if he wishes to successfully run for public office. However, he can easily make these improvements if he follows my recommendations. He must improve his delivery, organization, and be sure to include a preview and transitions. To do this Phil should be sure to practice frequently before giving his speech, as well as allow others to read over his speech, and highlighting his preview and transitions so he will be sure to state them.
On October 3rd, 2002, Minnesota Senator Paul Wellstone walked unto the Senate floor to give what would be one of the most momentous speeches of his career. A day prior, the Senate leadership had introduced a resolution, backed by the George W. Bush Administration, to authorize the President to attack Iraq. Wellstone, a progressive Democrat, had long been noted for his strong anti-war views. However, he was at the time struggling to win reelection, and a vote against the popular resolution could sway the election in his opponent’s favor. Yet instead of joining the bipartisan chorus for war with Iraq and abandoning his anti-war convictions, Wellstone chose to stand as a “monument of individual courage” and raise his concerns about the direction of American foreign policy (Kennedy 223).
Jim Valvano was the head coach for the North Carolina State Wolfpack in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). In 1992, he was diagnosed with terminal cancer and as a result he created the V Foundation, whose raises money for cancer research. In 1993, Valvano won the Arthur Ashe Award for Courage at the ESPY’s. In his acceptance speech, Valvano effectively incorporates the three appeals of speech writing, but uses a strong ethos appeal to capture the audience. Through such a strong ethos appeal, Valvano makes himself worthy for the award he is receiving, which is the goal for any acceptance speech. Valvano’s speech is also effective because he uses four of the six parts of a speech, found in the Ad Herenium. In Valvano’s speech, exordium, narration, proof, and peroration are present. Since the purpose of this speech is not to get the hearers to donate, division (showing the difference between you and your opponent) and refutation (lowering your opponent’s arguments) are not needed. So let us go through Valvano’s speech to see the different parts where he makes his ethos appeal.
Ronald Reagan’s inspiring, patriotic voice invokes a sense of credibility and ____, which he uses to _________. Reagan’s rhetorical style is crucial in defining him as a president. Not only does he provide his own voice in his speeches, he speaks for his nation. Reagan displays a strong will and integrity in his character, all while being capable of connecting and empathizing with his audience. He gives the common people his respect, which is necessary for reaching the pinnacle of leadership for his country.
Have you ever listened to a speech after a tragedy that was so good, that it affected you and even though something traumatic happened it helped you feel better? That indeed is a style of speaking called rhetoric. Rhetoric is the study of effective speaking and writing, and the art of persuasion. Many people are not able to speak and convey that art of rhetoric that helps with grief or sentiment. Today, I will show you an example of two different speeches delivered after tragedies, by two of our nation’s presidents. The first, President Obama’s address to the nation after Sandy Hook Elementary Shooting and the other Ronald Reagan’s address after The Space shuttle “Challenger” tragedy.
“Climb on one’s back and stand on their shoulders to reach the top” this is what the Coronel Colin Powell hints to recent graduate from the Howard University in 1994. The Commencement Speech was long enough to motivate the graduating students. Also, it was proper and formal. When the speech began, Powell was exciting by ending on sharing his own experiences and giving great advices for those future professionals. Powell´s Commencement Speech demonstrates his interest by sharing his thoughts, and its language was uplifting and captivating. (502).
He instructed the candidates to give their 8 minute opening speech and their three minute of the closing speech. The first person introduced by Smith was Senator Kennedy. Kennedy's concept throughout his opening statement was that the world would move in the same direction that the U.S. moved. That was in regard to how the U.S. moved ahead toward freedom. He also stated that the American people should be aware of the communists, Khrushchev in the Soviet Union, the Chinese Communists, how they were on the move.
adequate. Hickam did use good transitions between his main points. The speech did expand my
Overall, O’ Brien did a phenomenal job connecting with his audience. His speech had universal significance because his message was, failure and change will prevail, but you should embrace it and learn from it. This message is important cause failure and change universally affects everyone. O’Brien is giving the audience valuable advice by telling them to embrace their shortcomings and losses. Many people do not know what do when they fail. O’ Brien leads the viewers into comfort by telling them he has once failed before he was successful. O’Brien speech was very effective because of his use of humor and anecdotes, which helped convey his message with his audience.
In the speech, Reagan’s uses emotional appeal through diction that emphasizes the harsh reality of Germany being in a divided state. He states that the ‘’brutal division’’ that is ‘’cutting’’ across the city is an inevitable reminder for every Berliner to ‘’look upon a scar’’. It is a method Reagan uses to remind everyone, especially the Berliners, that half of their beloved country is trapped under communism. After stirring bitter sentiments to the people, he goes on and say that despite of ‘’the shadow of [the] wall’’, there was a ‘’message of triumph’’, giving a sense of hope to everyone against the division. To support those uplifting words, Reagan again appeals to emotion by inviting Gorbachev to work together and stating that there was
On July 27, 2004, Barack Obama made arguably his most important speech, “The Audacity of Hope”, at the Democratic National Convention Keynote Address. These conventions are for political parties to announce a winner for nomination. All the way through his piece, Obama focuses on connecting Americans and himself to the audience. In fact, at the time, Barack Obama was a US Senate candidate for the United States president, and in making this speech, was offered a window for raising his popularity. Throughout “The Audacity of Hope” speech, Barack Obama implements three main devices to raise his political popularity: repetition, abstract language, and structure.
Ronald Reagan started his day out by announcing a speech at the National Conference Building and Construction Trades Department. Reagan finished his speech (to a group of trade unionists) around 2:25. All Mr. President had to do was walk 30 feet to his waiting limo. The Secret Service thought he didn't need a bulletproof vest because he didn't have to walk that far, but they were
While watching my video I did notice that I was able to understand and clearly know what the main point was. I spoke in a clear and a tone loud enough for everyone to hear. The speech was organized very well, so one idea or thought flowed to the next. I don’t think I need to change anything in regards to my central idea being clear. I was satisfied with that part of the speech.
James T. Patterson's central idea is telling about the 1960s and how 1965 was the year of big change that was or the better. He was saying that the times that erupted in 1965 differed immensely from the early 1960s that resembled the 1950s. Racial equality, a wide range of personal choices, freedom, and rights were topics that were intensified in 1965, and they led to large and lasting changes. One journalist, Nicholas Lemann, stated that "the 1960s turned as if on a hinge" (2). In 2006, a writer and cultural critic, Luc Sante commented, "I think Western culture, in the broadest sense of that term, hit some sort of peak around 1965, ’66, lost it soon thereafter and has not re-attained that level since” (2). The Sixties did not demolish all
In public speaking I learned many types of concepts, theories and terms of communication. In concepts of publicly speaking there’s, relaxation, practice, credibility, attention getters, attire, organization, volume, emotion, audience relation, and movement. In my first speech, “The any old bag speech” I quickly learned the do’s, don’ts and concepts of my speech performance.
The way we communicate can be very important in representing ourselves in our community. In the beginning, of the semester, we watched a movie regarding a royal member whom was looked down upon because of his verbal pauses. However, throughout the movie he learns to work with his speaking style. He may have not completely eliminated the flaw but, he did learn how to overcome and adjust with it is style of public speaking. Public speaking is very power it as the authority to make an audience shock, upset, surprised, disbelief, and even to become inspired. By using structure in a speech and applying ethos, pathos, and logos can create a deeper connection to the audience. Therefore, the most impactful part of a speech is its introduction. Such that if the speaker implies a power attention getter they are able to deliver their message successfully. In my class presentation, the times I won speaker of the day I noticed that within my speech the only reason why I was selected was because I provided a strong attention getter and because my voice was very loud and it had minimal of verbal pauses. I have learned that any speech can be delivered successfully when the elements of structure and practiced are present. For most of my presentation to prepare I would practice my speech by recording myself with a tape recorder and then replying. This allowed
