In the cold mitts of January, 1780, 4 years after the Declaration of Independence was written, Mrs. Abigail Adams has wrote a letter to her son, John Quincy Adams. Mrs. Adams letter explains that during his trip he should try to gain knowledge and wisdom. She uses imagery, metaphors, and historical allusions to advise John Quincy Adams while he is abroad with his father. This letter shows how she is caring about her son and wants safety for him during the trip as well. She is also very strict with her motherly side in this letter. Mrs. Adams imagery in an effective approach by stating “You have had no occasion, either from enemies or the danger of the sea, to repent your second voyage to France.” This provides an image of the dangers of the
sea and the dangers of enemies, which will put fear into his consciousness. Mrs. Adams wants her son to be caution during that voyage. This quote gives a big motherly side to the letter which should convince him more. Yet Mrs. Adams uses other rhetorical device to persuade him even more. She uses metaphor in the letter when she states “Compares a judicious traveler to a river, that increases its stream the further it flows from its source; or to certain springs, which, running through rich veins of minerals.” This compares a traveler to a river and how they both strengthen when they are away from the main source or the family. This can relate to John Quincy Adams because he is going away from his mother and home, where he should gain more knowledge while he is abroad with his father. Mrs. Adams says this to persuade her son that going away is a good cause.
However, the author 's interpretations of Jefferson 's decisions and their connection to modern politics are intriguing, to say the least. In 1774, Jefferson penned A Summary View of the Rights of British America and, later, in 1775, drafted the Declaration of the Causes and Necessity of Taking Up Arms (Ellis 32-44). According to Ellis, the documents act as proof that Jefferson was insensitive to the constitutional complexities a Revolution held as his interpretation of otherwise important matters revolved around his “pattern of juvenile romanticism” (38). Evidently, the American colonies’ desire for independence from the mother country was a momentous decision that affected all thirteen colonies. However, in Ellis’ arguments, Thomas Jefferson’s writing at the time showed either his failure to acknowledge the severity of the situation or his disregard of the same. Accordingly, as written in the American Sphinx, Jefferson’s mannerisms in the first Continental Congress and Virginia evokes the picture of an adolescent instead of the thirty-year-old man he was at the time (Ellis 38). It is no wonder Ellis observes Thomas Jefferson as a founding father who was not only “wildly idealistic” but also possessed “extraordinary naivete” while advocating the notions of a Jeffersonian utopia that unrestrained
John’s was born on January 16, 1736 in Braintree, Massachusetts. He was the middle child of three. He was the son of John Hancock, who was born on June 1, 1702 in Lexington, Massachusetts and child of Mary Hawke, who was born on October 13, 1711 in Hingham, Massachusetts. His mother was married once before she married Johns farther. Her marriage ended in her former husband’s death. John Hancock Sr was a “faithful Shepard.” He always kept an alert watch over the ethics and religious well-being of all members of the neighborhood. Ever since John’s (Jr.) birth, he was perceived to go to Harvard. When he was six, his parents sent him to a local dame school. Later he was sent to another institute, in where he met John Adams, whom became a friend of his. Like all the other children, John learned the basics of writing, figuring, and reading. All things appeared to be going well, until spring of 1774. His father had gotten sick, that later would kill him. His grief grew more because they would have to move. His mother’s parents were both dead and a very difficult choice would have to be made by her. Her anxiety to make that decision was diminished by the offer from the bishop and his wife, to live with them in Lexington. A year later, John was sent away to live with his uncle Thomas and aunt Lydia, and attend Boston Latin School. The move genuinely altered John Hancock’s life.

Women regardless of age, religion, social class, fought for one objective; the achievement to get the right to vote, the right to make their own decisions. She was part of this achievement. Susan B.
