SOAPSTONE Analytic Essay In the poem Survivor wrote by Marilyn Chin it states they she don’t know what she is in her ways she’s feels like she’s is confused about her race. In the poem she feels like she don’t understand where she is from because she s being raised in the american culture, but still trying to figure it out and she is thinking about it. Towards the end of the poem she has the figures out the conflict and she feels that the title will eventually go away. In the poem the speaker is not sure if she is confused or if she dosen’t know what her race is. In the poem its states that she is not sure if she should use chopsticks or if she is really from america and people she is going to school with are looking at her weird like
In the first stanza the speaker states her dual heritage by her right hand representing her white heritage and her left representing her Chickasaw heritage. There is such a divide between the two that she even has to reassure herself and the reader that these are in fact her hands:
It is very clear that the narrator is aggravated with the ignorance of some people as they assume she is supposed to sound different than she does because she is black. To emphasize her agitation throughout the poem, the narrator asks rhetorical questions such as; "Was I supposed to sound lazy, dropping syllables here, there, not finishing words but slurring the final letter so that each sentence joined the next, sliding past the listener? Were certain words off limits, too erudite, too scholarly for someone with a natural tan? And Does everyone in your family speak alike?"
The female, adolescent speaker helps the audience realize the prejudice that is present in a “melting-pot” neighborhood in Queens during the year 1983. With the setting placed in the middle of the Civil Rights Movement, the poem allows the audience to examine the experience of a young immigrant girl, and the inequality that is present during this time. Julia Alvarez in “Queens, 1963” employs poetic tools such as diction, figurative language, and irony to teach the reader that even though America is a place founded upon people who were strangers to the land, it is now home to immigrants to claim intolerance for other foreigners, despite the roots of America’s founding.
Which in some cases it might apply and be true, but a whole race can’t be classified as poor or uneducated because not everyone in a minority group are lower class and not everyone in the hegemony race is wealthy and has had a good education. Her. “Mother never lost her accent, though, the music of her voice, charming everyone.” (701) This quote shows that the author still thinks her mom 's voice is beautiful, even though is different from her own voice and how she admires her mother accent and don’t think less of her by the accent even if that’s not the accent she pick up as a kid. It also implies that now everyone in a same household has the same accent and this is because people even in the same neighborhood have different
In this poem, there is a young woman and her loving mother discussing their heritage through their matrilineal side. The poem itself begins with what she will inherit from each family member starting with her mother. After discussing what she will inherit from each of her family members, the final lines of the poem reflect back to her mother in which she gave her advice on constantly moving and never having a home to call hers. For example, the woman describes how her father will give her “his brown eyes” (Line 7) and how her mother advised her to eat raw deer (Line 40). Perhaps the reader is suggesting that she is the only survivor of a tragedy and it is her heritage that keeps her going to keep safe. In the first two lines of the poem, she explains how the young woman will be taking the lines of her mother’s (Lines 1-2). This demonstrates further that she is physically worried about her features and emotionally worried about taking on the lineage of her heritage. Later, she remembered the years of when her mother baked the most wonderful food and did not want to forget the “smell of baking bread [that warmed] fined hairs in my nostrils” (Lines 3-4). Perhaps the young woman implies that she is restrained through her heritage to effectively move forward and become who she would like to be. When reading this poem, Native American heritage is an apparent theme through the lifestyle examples, the fact lineage is passed through woman, and problems Native Americans had faced while trying to be conquested by Americans. Overall, this poem portrays a confined, young woman trying to overcome her current obstacles in life by accepting her heritage and pursuing through her

The poem is about the early stages in the narrator’s pregnancy. The doctor gives her news that the baby may be unhealthy. In a state of panic, we see the narrator turning to the methods of her homeland and native people to carry her through this tough time, and ensure her child’s safe delivery into the world. Da’ writes, “In the hospital, I ask for books./Posters from old rodeos. /A photo of a Mimbres pot /from southern New Mexico /black and white line figures—/a woman dusting corn pollen over a baby’s head/during a naming ceremony. /Medieval women/ingested apples/with the skins incised with hymns and verses/as a portent against death in childbirth” (Da’). We not only see her turning to these old rituals of her cultural, but wanting the items of her cultural to surround her and protect her. It proves her point of how sacred a land and cultural is, and how even though she has been exiled from it, she will continue to count it as a part of her
Chang-Rae Lee’s Native Speaker expresses prominent themes of language and racial identity. Chang-Rae Lee focuses on the struggles that Asian Americans have to face and endure in American society. He illustrates and shows readers throughout the novel of what it really means to be native of America; that true nativity of a person does not simply entail the fact that they are from a certain place, but rather, the fluency of a language verifies one’s defense of where they are native. What is meant by possessing nativity of America would be one’s citizenship and legality of the country. Native Speaker suggests that if one looks different or has the slightest indication that one should have an accent, they will be viewed not as a native of America, but instead as an alien, outsider, and the like. Therefore, Asian Americans and other immigrants feel the need to mask their true identity and imitate the native language as an attempt to fit into the mold that makes up what people would define how a native of America is like. Throughout the novel, Henry Park attempts to mask his Korean accent in hopes to blend in as an American native. Chang-Rae Lee suggests that a person who appears to have an accent is automatically marked as someone who is not native to America. Language directly reveals where a person is native of and people can immediately identify one as an alien, immigrant, or simply, one who is not American. Asian Americans as well as other immigrants feel the need to try and hide their cultural identity in order to be deemed as a native of America in the eyes of others. “Dust Bowl Refugee” is a native, Anglo-American protest song written by Woody Guthrie in 1938 (Song Timeline) and also performed by him in 1940 and released on Victor-26623 (Online Discography Project), the recording of which was done by Alan Lomax. In the poem, The Boss is Back, written by Victoria Chang originates from her collection of poems in The Boss upon the hardships of office life. The continuous rhythm demonstrates the endless assigned tasks and projects given at the office, where breaks are nonexistent. Suffocation and anxiety are the main feelings of what how the persona feels. Overall, the persona contrasts between the rewards in good grades and how her boss fires the employees regardless of their performance. From the first stanza to the second stanza, the persona transitions between her identity of a mother and an employee implies how her work and personal identities are interconnected.
