In Jordi Diez’ article “Explaining Policy Outcomes: The Adoption of Same-Sex Unions in Buenos Aires and Mexico City,” the author almost sloppily explains his case. The purpose of the article is to compare and contrast the two cases of analyses of Buenos Aires’ and Mexico City’s passage of same-sex marriage. Whether one is affected by same sex marriage or not (the latter being those that don’t marry a partner of the same sex), the adoption of same sex unions in countries is an interesting one and also very important, even from the latter’s point of view. Adoption of same sex marriage is a stride in the direction of equality, and which countries, states, or cities do indeed adopt it can be extremely interesting especially, as in Latin America, there is a history or persecuting those who would have a same sex marriage. This change and steps toward greater acceptance is a big deal when considering that history. The main focus of the article is figuring out what led to the changes in policy and within the people leading up to and causing the changing of policy to better favor sexual minorities. …show more content…

This is particularly interesting because, as Diez mentions, beyond their success in altering public agenda, scholars rarely examine the effect social movements have on policy. The author particularly examines the social movements and their approaches in order to describe the reasoning behind the adoption of same-sex unions in the two cities, and then whether or not sexual minorities had a role in the actual policy making process. To do this, Diez focuses entirely on both the before and the during processes of policy
