Dan Kurland’s “What is Critical Thinking?” article analyzed the significant characteristic one must possess in order to become critical thinkers. These include rationality, self-awareness, honesty, open-mindedness, discipline and judgment. The article emphasized the importance of applying critical thinking to every aspect of our lives. At the beginning of the article, Kurland states, “In the process of satisfying our ego, however, we can often deny ourselves intellectual growth and opportunity.” I agree that more often than not, a human ego can lead to self-destruction. By being selfish, we are closing our own window to new and better opportunities. An egoistic mind will often be accompanied with close mindedness and stubbornness. Everyone …show more content…
The first step to possessing critical thinking skill is to adopt rationality, which defines the importance of facts compared to emotions during decision-making period. Most people are blinded by their emotions when they face a problem, especially when the circumstances are very stressful. The inability to think beyond our emotions can lead to consequences. Most of the time, emotions make people think irrationally, thus they frequently make mistakes in life. Thinking with emotions will also obstruct our ability to become unbiased and make fair judgment. However, I disagree that during critical thinking, we have to eliminate the use of emotions completely. Most of the great revolution of the world was started with fiery passion to change the world for the better. I believe that when a person can put their emotions for a good cause, they will have a strong drive to impact the world. The second skill to develop is self-awareness. Being self-aware means that we are aware of our assumptions, bias and prejudice and are working towards eliminating them. We try to understand what influences the way we think and whether it is healthy to continue thinking that way. The influence of mass media, stereotypes and cultural bias can impair a person’s ability to think critically. Self-awareness is important because it weighs variables instead of choosing factors that only benefit us during decision …show more content…
Both methods are applicable in day-to-day life in order to polish our perspective of the world. Wolfs shows how scientific method uses four steps to provide evidence and is a highly accepted method of inquiry in this modern world. This method is important for scientist to collect evidence and diminish or perform new or old theories. It applies rational thought and critical thinking into scientific inquiry. The steps required to perform scientific inquiry is similar to critical thinking. The first step is to observe a phenomenon without making any snap judgment or bias. The second step is to draw a hypothesis. Scientist must always remember that hypotheses are smart guesses or assumption and are not fact. The most common flaw of the experiment is that most scientists often believe that a theory is valid as long as the experiment matches. They are blinded with emotions and biased belief that they may will their experiment to have the result that they wanted. Therefore, many times reported scientific discoveries lacks credibility and are falsified. Frank Wolfs proposes a solution to this method which is hypotheses testing. He suggests that if the theory does not match with the experiment, it is better for scientists not to dispose it directly or judge that the theory is not valid. If the theory does not match with the experiment, scientist should still use the hypotheses in a limited range. Scientist that
Scientists make progress by using the scientific method, a process of checking conclusions against nature. After observing something, a scientist tries to explain what has been seen. The explanation is called a hypothesis. There is always at least one alternative hypothesis. A part of nature is tested in a "controlled experiment" to see if the explanation matches reality. A controlled experiment is one in which all treatments are identical except that some are exposed to the hypothetical cause and some are not.
Critical thinking is when you conduct an unbiased examination and assessment of an issue to form an opinion. There are certain stages you must go through to be considered a critical thinker. Those steps consist of the unreflective thinker, challenged thinker, beginning thinker, practicing thinker, the advanced thinker, and accomplished thinker. The idea of critical thinking goes hand in hand with the concept of metacognition as well. Before we attempt to become critical thinkers, we must first understand the stages of critical thinking.
In the AOK of the natural sciences, having a skeptical approach can be quite beneficial. The natural sciences utilizes extensive methods in which they come to conclusions about the information presented, based on the various experiment...
The Scientific Method is the standardized procedure that scientists are supposed to follow when conducting experiments, in order to try to construct a reliable, consistent, and non-arbitrary representation of our surroundings. To follow the Scientific Method is to stick very tightly to a order of experimentation. First, the scientist must observe the phenomenon of interest. Next, the scientist must propose a hypothesis, or idea in which the experiments will be based around. Then, through repeated experimentation, the hypothesis can either be proven false or become a theory. If the hypothesis is proven to be false, the scientist must reformulate his or her ideas and come up with another hypothesis, and the experimentation begins again. This process is to be repeated until a theory is produced. The production of a theory is usually called the conclusion. After considerable testing of the theory, it may become what is known as a law, but laws are only formed in very rare occasions where the theory can be proven without a doubt, which is usually done through induction.
Critical thinking is an important aspect of an individual’s daily life, regardless of an ethnicity, gender, or age. The individual, who has a strong sense of critical thinking skills, has a sense of inquisitiveness, finding an inventive solution to a problem or issue that he or she may be faced with. Critical thinking is used on an individual’s personal life he or she as well will use his or her critical thinking skills on a professional level. In the following paper the discussion of what critical thinking is as well as discusses the “University of Phoenix’s” decision making model, and how critical thinking skills can help us make a crucial decision. The subsequent paragraphs will also discuss the significance of as well as the benefits of critical thinking.
What is not easily recognized is the fact that the very fabric of life is dependent on the ability to think properly and make good decisions. Improper thinking is costly in the quality of life and monetarily. The result of a critical thinker that has worked to cultivate proper thinking skills includes: the ability to ask vital questions and to identify problems with clarity. A critical thinker also collects relevant information while effectively interpreting it, thinks with an open mind, uses alternative systems of thought, and understands how to communicate while working to formulate a strong solution. In summary, critical thinking is self-disciplined, self-monitored, and self-corrective thinking. Above all else, the standards of excellence are rigorous, and it entails the prospect of overcoming the challenge of sociocentrism and
The campus applies videos and discussions during classes in order to enable students apply various concepts as they are taught; derive the concepts from data and observations; as well as practicing scientific processes. Moll presents an assessment of the particular program which includes data on improvement of student’s critical thinking. The article concludes that education might help students to progress through the critical thinking
Theories should be tested, and have efficient evidence in order to be considered as scientific. Isaac Newton’s prism experiment was a critical experiment in the physics community where Newton researched and tested white light to isolate the explain that white light was made of several colours of light.
According to The Foundation for Critical Thinking (2007), "Critical thinking is, in short, self-directed, self-disciplined, self-monitored, and self-corrective thinking. It presupposes assent to rigorous standards of excellence and mindful command of their use. It entails effective communication and problem solving abilities and a commitment to overcome our native egocentrism (Foundation for Critical Thinking, 2007).

A team of scientists can observe the same phenomenon under investigation. They can then formulate a hypothesis to account for those behaviors. They can then form experiments so they can confirm or reject those hypothesis designed to explain the behavior of organisms.
In such a research, an experimenter is required to come up with a method using different tools to make his/her experiment valid and reliable. Observations and data is then collected. They can either disprove the theory made earlier or approve it. If the data disapproves the prediction made from the theory, then an experimenter pursues in improving the theory. Indeed, many things can go wrong in such research.
Critical thinking is when an individual identifies and evaluates outside sources before making a decision. This is a very important still to learn to become an effective thinker and making educated choices. Critical thinking is fundamental when making choices, from selecting the right answer on multiple choice exams to choosing the right place and time to buy a house. An individual that has learned critical thinking is less expected to make poor choices that could potentially harm him or affect others. In theory this individual could calculate the consequences of his actions. A good critical thinker doesn’t need to memorize huge amounts of information. Instead, he asks questions, is open to alternative solutions, formulates theories,
Critical thinking regularly involves the capability to interpret information and make knowledgeable decisions based on such information. Additionally, problem solving is frequently theorised as the use of critical thinking skills towards the effective solution of a specific problem or towards a specific end goal. Critical thinking is the disciplined art of ensuring that you use the best thinking you are capable of in any set of circumstances. The general goal of thinking is to figure out some situation” (Critical Thinking, 2001, p.1), solve some problem, answer some questions, or resolve some issue. It also is a process in which a person pursuits reliable and pertinent information about the world. Critical thinking is often described as reasonable, ruminative, trustworthy, and a well-practiced form of thinking that assists people with deciding what they should believe in and what actions should be taken. A practiced critical thinker will ask good questions, collects pertinent data, categorizes common characteristics, logically reasons with the new data and then he or she will come to a trustworthy and dependable conclusion. Critical thinking makes use of many processes and procedures. Some processes include but is not limited to asking questions, making judgments, and identifying
“Critical thinking is the disciplined art of ensuring that you use the best thinking you are capable of in any set of circumstances” (Paul & Elder, 2006, p. xviii). Critical thinking involves the capability to think rationally and fair-minded. One must have the ability to employ his thinking reflectively and independently. Critical thinking is more than just thinking "naturally." It involves analyzing oneself and self improvement. One needs to do more than gather information when making a good decision to think critically. Even if someone has a good memory and knows a large amount of facts is does not necessarily mean that he thinks critically. As a critical thinker one needs the ability to determine the consequences from what one knows, to know how to make use of information to solve problems, and seek reliable sources of information to inform oneself ("Module: About Critical Thinking", 2011). Critical thinking in business in important because it helps one recognize the prejudices, false beliefs, and habits that may lead to flawed decisions.
