Carole Wilkinson’s Dragonkeeper impressed me with its writing style and incredible settings. She uses very rich vocabularies and analogies which help to imagine the towns, villages, and environment of old China. In addition, there were hidden settings and these become apparent at the end of the story. When I found out the hidden settings, I recognized the characters’ unusual behaviors. Ping who is the protagonist of this book learns a lot of important things with her friends while their thrilling and wonderful journey

The main conflict of the story is the battle with Diao. Diao is a dragon hunter and he always looks for Ping and Danzi and tries to kill them. At the beginning of the novel, Ping was very weak woman so they could not fight against him, but as the story progresses, Ping gains magical power and she could protect her friends.
My favorite scenes of this book are fighting scenes and the ending scene. When I was reading the fighting scenes, I was very excited, because the story was very thrilling and I couldn’t expect what will happen next. Also, I like the ending of this story. Danzi told all secrets which he didn’t tell Ping even though she asked him. After I recognized the truth, I understood Danzi’s unusual behaviors.

Dr. Luther King Jr stated,“This is the most important and crucial period in your lives, for what you do now and what you decide not at this age may well determine which way your life shall go.” In the satirical fairy tale Dealing with dragons, written by Patricia Wrede Cimorene, the princess of Linderwall is a great example for this quote because she goes on crazy adventures. Cimorene was justified in showing apathy toward the expected social norms of her day because she helped save the dragons, escaped a life she did not enjoy, and she was able to avoid marrying someone she did not love.

The Death of Woman Wang, by Jonathan Spence is an educational historical novel of northeastern China during the seventeenth century. The author's focus was to enlighten a reader on the Chinese people, culture, and traditions. Spence's use of the provoking stories of the Chinese county T'an-ch'eng, in the province of Shantung, brings the reader directly into the course of Chinese history. The use of the sources available to Spence, such as the Local History of T'an-ch'eng, the scholar-official Huang Liu-hung's handbook and stories of the writer P'u Sung-Ling convey the reader directly into the lives of poor farmers, their workers and wives. The intriguing structure of The Death of Woman Wang consists on observing these people working on the land, their family structure, and their local conflicts.

Personally, I really liked An Ocean Apart, A World Away by Lensey Namioka because of the insight provided regarding values, beliefs, customs, languages and traditions in the Chinese culture. In general, it illustrated the cultural norms for a Chinese (Zhuang) family which helped me compare it many of the other cultures I have already been exposed to such as Pakistani, Indian, Korean and Canadian. The writing style of the novel is very clear and focused on the main purpose throughout the novel. Additionally, Namioka explains the reasoning and behind the events of Yanyan’s life, her choices, and the political environment in China to reduce any confusion of the readers. I would definitely recommend it to anyone who would like an interesting read, but is unable to set aside the time for a long novel.
Spurling, Hilary. Pearl Buck In China Journey to the Good Earth. New York: Simon & Schuster, 2010.
Pearl Sydenstricker was born in Hillsboro, West Virginia in 1892. Her missionary parents, Absalom and Carrie Sydenstricker brought her to China when she was three months old. By the time she was four, she spoke and wrote Chinese as well as English (Conn, NDA). She was at first educated by her mother and tutored by a Chinese Confucian Scholar (Author’s Calendar, 2002). While her parents carried out their Christian mission all over the Chinkiang province of China, Pearl was left under the care of her “amah” or governess. It was her amah that fascinated her with Chinese folklores and mythical tales of ancient magic, fairies and dragons (Conn, NDA).

The book I chose to read was Reckless by Cornelia Funke. The book’s genre is fantasy. When I first began reading this book I really did not enjoy it or understand it, but it soon started to get interesting. The characters became interesting and the plot started to grab my attention. Soon I had to finish reading it, but the end was really disappointing.
I would recommend this book to anybody, it appeals any audience. It's a wonderful story
