bell hooks, the pen name of Gloria Watkins, wrote numerous books on social problems of the time period. In this particular article, Watkins describes what Americans truly think about poverty. She argues that the poor are represented in a negative manner, and she proposes solutions to this problem. To prove the negative connotation of the poor, Watkins utilizes personal experience at Stanford. She notes that her professors and classmates always made the poor seem lazy and useless. Furthermore, when something went missing, the students would always point blame at the housekeepers who are perceived to be poor. Additionally, Watkins conveys that media plays an important role in the negative connotation of the poor. She points out Harlem Nights
and Menace II Society to name a few. According to Watkins, these movies have similar plots in which the poor will do anything for material goods. She claims that this longing for material goods demoralizes the poor. In order to promote change in the generalization of the poor, Watkins claims that people must understand that one can live a life of great value but be poor. Realizing this is true from personal experience, she calls for change in society. Additionally, she states that wealth and resources must be distributed equally in order to change the negative connotation of the poor. Through media and personal experience, Watkins clearly identifies a problem within society towards the poor. Even though the poor are identified in this negative way, she suggests that there are many important values and lessons to be learned from the poor. Furthermore, Watkins shows the reader that the poor are unjustly represented in media and everyday language.
In bell hooks’ “Seeing and Making Culture: Representing the Poor”, she discusses the portrayal and misrepresentation of poverty in our society and the methods behind the dilemma. In this excerpt, retrieved from her book Outlaw Culture: Resisting Representations (1994), hooks focuses on the negative effects of contemporary popular culture and its contribution to the negative societal views on poverty.
When someone thinks of the poor they instantly imagine a homeless man sleeping in a cardboard box or the nearest garbage can, but the working poor especially in the inner-city is commonly overlooked by society. However the working poor, in this case the working poor in the inner-city, are people advancing to try and make their lives better. They are taking minimum wage jobs so that they can barely afford a roof over their heads. Within Katherine Newman?s novel No Shame In My Game, she studies the working poor in the inner-city to draw conclusions about how to help them and dispute common stereotypes and the images people commonly view. Newman?s conclusions along with the way she had conducted her case study will be evaluated for her positive and negative points while searching for any biases she may have portrayed within her novel.
Poverty is huge deal a huge topic in today’s society and not many people take consideration on this important topic. In the short essay by Diana George “Changing the Face of Poverty; Nonprofits and the Problem of Representation” she uses several key rhetorical methods to argue how poverty is being represented and how it limits on what poverty actually is. George begins building her point by using illustrations in the essay to explain how poverty is not being represented properly by nonprofit organizations. Then asks for other people’s opinions on this topic to help get her point through. She also uses the title of her essay to get her overall idea through. All of these points are very important and should be taken in consideration when talking about poverty.
Bell Hooks is a well-known Feminist. She has achieved a lot through her lifetime, and is still going strong. Bell Hooks is mostly known for her fight for feminism and for mainly African American females. She is also known for the many books she has written and for her public speaking. But besides all the major facts above, there is a lot more to Bell Hooks then you think. Throughout your readings you will learn a little more about Bell and her accomplishments. The notion of poverty has a very expanded meaning. Although all three stories use poverty as their theme, each interprets it differently. Consequently, it does not necessarily mean the state of extreme misery that has been described in ?Everyday Use?. As Carver points out, poverty may refer to poverty of one?s mind, which is caused primarily by the lack of education and stereotyped personality. Finally, poverty may reflect the hopelessness of one?s mind. Realizing that no bright future awaits them, Harlem kids find no sense in their lives. Unfortunately, the satisfaction of realizing their full potential does not derive from achieving standards that are unachievable by others. Instead, it arises uniquely from denigrating others, as the only way to be higher than someone is to put this person lower than you.
The article “As American As Apple Pie” is about, poverty and welfare and how they are looked down upon and treated with suspicion or outright antagonism, and how many associate those in poverty with negative stereotypes often seen as deviant such as homeless, lazy, and criminals. Mark R. Rank points out how poverty across the world is a lot more normal than we think it might be. Some people are at greater risk than others, depending on age, race, gender, family structure, community of residence, education, work skills, and physical disabilities. This article provides the readers with data and analysis of American poverty and welfare over the course of the past 25 years. In the book Bone Black, Bell Hooks gives a vivid look into her childhood. She starts off by talking about a quilt that her mother gave her from her mother. She thinks that this is special because her mother gave it to her and not one of her other sisters. Then she goes into describing how the children in her family never knew that they were poor until they grew up. They liked the dolls that they played with and the food that they ate. They never wondered why they didn’t have the things that their white neighbors did have. You would seldomly hear them complain because they had to walk to school and the white kids rode the school bus. She thought that they had a pretty normal family.
In her novel called “Feminist Theory: From Margin to Center” one of the many areas bell hooks speaks of is the perpetual racial confinement of oppressed black women. The term double-bind comes to mind when she says “being oppressed means the absence of choices” (hooks 5). The double-bind is “circumstances in which choices are condensed to a few and every choice leads to segregation, fault or denial” Therefore, this essay will discuss how hooks’ definition of oppression demonstrates the double-bind in race relations, forcing the socially underprivileged minority to “never win,” and as a result allowing the privileged dominate “norm” to not experience perpetual segregation.
Basic education is mandatory for all kids in the United States. There are laws with minimum and maximum age limits for required free education, but this does not make all education equal. The minimum age varies from four to five to begin kindergarten, while most students graduate high school by age of eighteen or nineteen. However, there are kids that begin their education much earlier. Bell Hooks’ “Seeing and Making Culture: Representing the Poor”, Jonathan Kozol’s “From Still Separate, Still Unequal: America’s Educational Apartheid”, and Barbara Ehrenreich’s “How I Discovered the Truth About Poverty” have a common topic, “poverty”. Moreover, each of these readings has a different perspective with a different agenda attached, but “poverty”
During the second week of class, we were instructed to read a reading written by Bell Hooks titled “Come closer to Feminism.” This reading is what I consider to be a very important addition to this unit. Unit one is all about Making waves, Confronting Oppression. According to Frye, it is a fundamental claim of feminism that women are oppressed (Frye, 1983). Before taking upon this reading, my understanding of the feminist movement was not nearly as clear as it is now. After reading this short handbook, I too agree that feminism is for everybody.
In Killing Rage, bell hooks shares an unfortunate experience she had when her and a friend tried sitting in first class seats while also analyzing the racism and sexism that was occurring. She goes in extreme depth on her inner rage during this experience and relates it to many other things that have happened in her life. bell hooks explains to how her inner rage has transformed from something that she, and all black people, are supposed to keep bottled up inside to something she will willingly express.

Barbra’s humor kept all readers on there toes while reading the novel, Nickel and Dimed. Although, at times, her comments were offensive or over-the-top it never took away from her arguments. She was clear in her goal and motive and was able to prove her point in writing the novel. Thanks to Barbara’s novel, she was able to raise awareness of how the poor were looked upon and treated. Through a waitress in Ohio, a maid in Maine, and a Wal-Mart employ in Minnesota Barbara gave great entertainment and great truth.
Today's news is full of speculation and debate about the national debt, taxes and potential cuts to vital programs that serve those in need. However, the conversation often seems overly caught up in the finer points of politics and media coverage rather than the real people that these decisions affect. I think it's fair to say that American attitudes toward the poor are more often than not, disdain and fear. There's a common myth that people are forced into poverty because they are simply lazy or inferior, the truth is it is harder to feed and clothe your family than ever before. Poverty in this country is not accidental, it is a direct result of funneling wealth upstream; the rich get richer and the poor suffer. " The poor you will always have with you, and you can help them any time you want " Mark 14:7.
