Drawing on his experience as a past Bali tourist, Tom Hyland examines the way that Bali, also known as the ‘Island of the Gods’, has changed since his last visit. “Doing dumb things to an island we claim to love”, shows that home grown citizens along with tourist don’t respect the island, we so call “love”. Directing his piece towards native members of Bali, along with anyone around the globe looking to visit the island, Tom, tells the damaging effects and ways of life that Bali has come to, since the 1980s. Hyland corroborates that visitors are wiping out the goodness and morality out of Bali, thus resulting into making the island ‘a paradise lost, a sweet place gone sour’. A lot of tourists would not think that they are offending the native residents when they travel. In the article, “The Ugly Tourist” excerpt from Jamaica Kincaid’s book, Small Place, she argues that when one is in a state of being a tourist, one does not know the depth of the place and only sees what one wants to see. Kincaid gives a strong idea of what she is arguing when she described a tourist as “an ugly human being.” She presents the emotional conflicts between tourist and the natives by evaluating their different lifestyles.

Song of Ariran is a collaborative work of great importance. The book, written by Nym Wales, is a personal account of Kim San, who was a Korean rebel leader based in China. San was fighting the Japanese occupation of his country. The book emerged out of Wales’ interviews with San, which took place in the summer of 1937. While Wales admits that he was not entirely interested in devoting his time and energies to an in depth investigation, he was soon won over by San. According to Wales, even though he had come to China to study China, she could not help but want to write a book about the fascinating Korean revolutionary leader Kim San, and this is exactly what she did by conducting in depth interviews with San.

Like most Americans, this woman uses a discourse that has been shaped by tourist advertisements and souvenirs. The woman's statement implies that Trask resembles what the tourist industry projects, as if this image created Hawaiian culture. As Trask asserts, Hawaiian culture existed long before tourism and has been exploited by tourism in the form of advertisements and items such as postcards. Along with the violence, endangered environment, and poverty, this exploitation is what the tourist industry does not want to show. However, this is the Hawai'i Haunani-Kay Trask lives in everyday. "This is Hawai'i, once the most fragile and precious of sacred places, now transformed by the American behemoth into a dying land. Only a whispering spirit remains" (Trask 19).
Kincaid begins by pointing out to “you,” a tourist what is missing from Antigua in order to first make clear the reality that knowledge is not existent, valued, or accessible in Antigua. She illustrates “your” arrival, when she notes, “You are a tourist and you have not yet seen a school in Antigua, you have not yet seen the hospital in Antigua, you have not yet seen a public monument in Antigua.” But she abruptly interrupts this thought and continues in sarcastic and marked nonchalance, “what a beautiful island Antigua is—more beautiful than any of the other islands you have seen.” (3) Here, Kincaid demonstrates that knowledge is severely lacking or nonexistent in the land of Antigua by providing examples of physical manifestations of a well educated society that are not present. Knowledge is attained by learning information, data, and facts made available to children through education in schools. In part fictional and part autobiographical novel “A Small Place” published in 1988, Jamaica Kincaid offers a commentary on how the tenets of white superiority and ignorance seem to emerge naturally from white tourists. She establishes this by using the nameless “you” depicted in the story to elucidate the thoughts they have when visiting such formerly colonized islands. This inner mentality of the white tourists reveals how tourism is still a form of oppression for the natives of such formerly colonized tourists as it continues to exploit them. I will be focusing primarily on page 10 of the text to illustrate this.
A Small Place by Jamaica Kincaid presents the hypothetical story of a tourist visiting Antigua, the author’s hometown. Kincaid places the reader in the shoes of the tourist, and tells the tourist what he/she would see through his/her travels on the island. She paints a picturesque scene of the tourist’s view of Antigua, but stains the image with details of issues that most tourists overlook: the bad roads, the origin of the so-called native food, the inefficiency of the plumbing systems in resorts, and the glitches in the health care system. Kincaid was an established writer for The New Yorker when she wrote this book, and it can be safely assumed that majority of her readers had, at some point in their lives, been tourists. I have been a tourist so many times before and yet, I had never stopped to consider what happens behind the surface of the countries I visit until I read this essay. Kincaid aims to provoke her readers; her style of writing supports her goal and sets both her and her essay apart. To the reader, it sounds like Kincaid is attacking the beautiful island, pin-pointing the very things that we, as tourists, wish to ignore. No tourist wants to think about faeces from the several tourists in the hotel swimming alongside them in the oceans, nor do they want to think about having accidents and having to deal with the hospital. It seems so natural that a tourist would not consider these, and that is exactly what Kincaid has a problem with.

Something about the music makes you really feel as if you were back in that exact time period the 1920’s. The musical conveys romance, revenge and drama.
South Pacific is a 1949 Broadway musical that opened on April 7th, written by Richard Rodgers and composed by Oscar Hammerstein. The musical came from the Pulitzer-Prize-winning novel, written in 1947, Tales of the South Pacific, by James A. Michener. The musical became a hit almost instantly and ran fro about 1,9457 performances. Rodgers and Hammerstein wanted to write a musical that would send a strong progressive message son the topic of racism. South Pacific takes place on a South Pacific Island during World War II, where it then goes on to show the lives of U.S. military men, nurses, and residents of the Polynesian island. The South Pacific musical had a great impact on the issue of racial prejudice.
According to Schneider, defining “authenticity” is a battle between indigenous peoples and the tourists who purchase their arts and crafts. As “tourist” art grows with the realization of international tourism as means of development and economic growth in marginalized communities, foreign assumptions affect the perception of indigenous arts and crafts as “legitimately” indigenous. Indigenous peoples readily “transform” functional items into feasible commodities; “goods such as “indigenous blouses and shawls” easily become “alien place mates and pillow cases,” enabling indigenous peoples to survive (Schneider 80).
In her essay, “Last Resorts: The Cost of Tourism in the Caribbean”, journalist Polly Pattullo presents an inside view of the resort industry in the Caribbean Islands, and how it truly operates. Tourism is the main industry of the Caribbean, formerly referred to as the West Indies, and it is the major part of the economy there. Pattullo’s essay mirrors the ideas of Trevor M.A. Farrell’s perspective “Decolonization in the English-Speaking Caribbean” in which he writes about the implicit meaning of the colonial condition. Pattollo’s essay illustrates that colonialism is present in the Caribbean tourism industry by comparing the meaning of it presented in Farrell’s perspective. In this essay I will explain how these two essays explain how decolonization hardly exists in the Caribbean.

His curiosity is rather apparent throughout the entire story and is first introduced as he spends his first night exploring everything inside the house and the garden the following afternoon. He stumbles upon a tailorbird, Darzee, as he is grieving his baby’s recent death due to a Cobra named Nag. This discussion will examine the sex tourism industry in Thailand and how it can create and maintain inequality, the problem of Child labour globally and Standardisation and commodification of culture.
