“The dawn of civilization sparked an age of discovery and nuance in the west. The earliest Neolithic people started as nomadic tribes that never stayed in one place for very long. They were hunters and gatherers and traveled in groups. This carried on until about 8000 b.c. When farming was developed, people could now enjoy the luxury of staying in one spot. This also led to the domestication of animals as livestock. Dating back to almost 3000 b.c., the Sumerian Civilization was the home of the earliest civilization. It was home to the first city, Ur, which was the center for worship of the Sumerian gods. Its largest city, Jericho, had 2,000 inhabitants. It is said that they created urban life through trading and taking part in public works. …show more content…
One civilization we have to thank for these accomplishments is the Sumerian Civilization. The first of many arts developed by the Sumerians that affect us today is their form of writing and the alphabet. The earliest form of writing was called cuneiform. It was a system of pictograms and signs that represented numbers that were written on tablets with a red stylus to represent an idea. Writing also helped develop the foundation of schools where sons of the upperclass were trained in the art of cuneiform. The teachers who taught these students prepared textbooks of word lists and math problems with the answers with them. It was the development of the first dictionary. Writing also helped in the development of poetry and creative writing. With the ability to write, poets such as Enheduanna, the worlds oldest poet, was able to write down beautiful hymns and poems to temple deities. Writing allowed for us to see int the mind of those living back in the ancient civilizations. For example, Enheduanna wrote hymns to a goddess named Ianna. They depicted her as a fierce warrior, an overseer of the home and the last one was Emnheduanna asking her for help in regaining status in the temple. This form of writing is still used today. In religious scripts and prayers, we see different saints or deities being asked for help or just …show more content…
The Sumerians were able to create multiplication and division tables, cubes, and cube roots. Furthermore they were able to figure out the area of a right triangle, a rectangle and divide a circle into 360 degrees. Later on they would put together some of the ideas that make up the Pythagorean Theorem and quadratic equations.” ¹ “Sumerian mathematics were based on a system of sexagesimal or 60 numeric system which could be counted physically using the five fingers and 12 knuckles on one hand. In addition, the system used place values where digits were written in the left column represented larger values. They had two distinct symbols to represent units and tens as well. This system was based on 60 because it was saw as the number with the most divisors. This idea has since then been dropped for the numerical system. We have, on the other hand, kept the 60 divisor in keeping time. For example, there are 60 seconds in a minute, 60 minutes in an hour, and so forth. Later Babylonian tablets dating from about 1800 to 1600 BCE have been found and they cover the topics of fractions, algebra, ways to solve quadratic equations, and cubic equations. Square digits and quadratic equations came about naturally when measurements were trying to be made. It is said that these tablets give us the first look at quadratic equations. They way they solved these was an unconventional game of slicing up the shapes and rearranging them. Today we use all
Without the Mesopotamians we would not have all the luxury we have today. Could you ever imagine a world without writing? You may think, life would not be so bad without it, but without writing we would not have stories, we could not write to the bank, we could not text. Two major contributions made to society were the first forms of writing known as Cuneiform and Hammurabi’s Code.
The first civilization to rise was the Mesopotamia, located in present day Iraq, between the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers, and Egypt, along the Nile River. It’s split in two ecological zones. In the south Babylonia (irrigation is vital) and north Assyria (agriculture is possible with rainfall and wells). By 4000 B.C.E., people had settled in large numbers in the river-watered lowlands of Mesopotamia and Egypt. Archaeologists have shown that large-scale irrigation appeared only long after urban civilization had already developed, meaning major waterworks were a consequence of urbanism (population). Mesopotamia cities were made of people called the Summerians in the land of Sumer located on the south of Babylonia. The Summerian city was one of
Gilgamesh is introduced as knowing all things and countries including mysteries and secrets that went on a long journey and had his story engraved on stone. This gives us a little information on the writing technique in Sumeria. Sumerian art was complex. Clay was the Sumerians' most widely used material. Sumerian available because of the invention of cuneiform writing before 3000 B.C. The characters consist of wedge-like strokes, impressed on clay tablets. This system of writing developed before the last centuries of the 4th millennium B.C. in the lower Tigris and Euphrates valley, probably by the Sumerians The history of the script is strikingly like that of the Egyptian hieroglyphic. This must have been the technique that Gilgamesh uses in order to transcribe his story onto these clay tablets. It was reinforced in the story by mentioning it at the beginning and end of the Epic.
The Mesopotamians and Egyptians are among the first civilizations to make a valuable contribution to Western Civilization. Both Babylonians and Egyptians managed to produce written systems of communicating ideas. The Babylonians created wedge-shaped cuneiform, and the Egyptians made pictographic hieroglyphics. This invention even allowed for Hammurabi’s Code of law to be written and preserved through the ages. The Phoenicians took this concept another step forward and fashioned the alphabet. The ability to record history is an exceptional achievement. Another development of the Ancient Near East was architecture. The Egyptian pyramids, and the Babylonian ziggurats stand as testimony to their society’s technological and architectural achievements. The Assyrians left a lasting impact on civilization with the advent of the idea of conquest which they took to ruthlessly brutal ends. Later the Persians would add a degree of tolerance into the conquest equation. The concept of conquest would leave an indelible mark on the West, for better or worse. These developments still play a role in contemporary society.
Writing is one of the many factors which can lead to an unequal world. Writing was “One of the most important inventions in human history” (Prososki, “Writing”). It was believed to come from the Fertile Crescent called Sumer around 5,000 years ago. Over the years, writing has advanced as people created writing and printing systems, which were able to reach
Writing is perhaps the most important building block of communication - after verbal speech, of course. Writing, like most of human civilization, has its roots in ancient Mesopotamia. The first writing systems began in a style known as cuneiform (Cuneiform, 2013). These wedge-shaped markings have their roots in Sumerian culture and were used predominantly for record keeping and accounting. At the archaeological site of Uruk in what is modern day Iraq, a great wealth of knowledge has been gained from the artifacts located there. Uruk was a ceremonial site and is home to the world’s oldest known documented written documents (Price and Feinman, 2013). The documents discovered list quantities of goods that may have been stored at Uruk, leading archaeologists to believe that writing in this part of the world was developed primarily to keep lists of transactions and stockpiled quantities of goods located at the site.
Ancient Mesopotamian societies had great shifts as cities and rulers rose and fell, rose and fell again, gaining land and enemies as they advanced The area Mesopotamia occupied is an immense, dry plain through which two rivers, the Euphrates and Tigris, course. These rivers rise from tributaries in the mountain ranges to the north before flowing through Mesopotamia to the sea. As they reach the land close to the sea, the land becomes swampy, with lagoons, mud flats, and reed banks, but in ancient times the sea advanced much further inland; and they poured into it as two separate streams, whereas today they join as one before reaching the sea. A close cultural cooperation was established between the Sumerians (who spoke a language that was more isolated) and the Semitic Akkadian speakers, which included extensive bilingualism in its culture. This took place around the third millennia BC and as the fourth millennia dawned Mesopotamia saw an increase in its population. By aspiring and adjusting to the changing world around them the people of Mesopotamia created government and states. Order began to develop in the territories, and due to the efficiency of its military and political structure their authority began to spread and empires grow. One of these city states Sumer was first permanently settled between c. 5500 and 4000 BC. Sumer a city-state coming to power in prehistoric time, prior to the cultures ability to leave much historical record, however in the twenty- third century BC writing came into being which has given historians their first glimpse into some of the earliest Mesopotamian cultures.
The school system of the Sumerians set the educational standards for Mesopotamia culture and other cultures to follow. Their studies included mathematics, botany and linguistics. Some students tha...
This Sumerian Government Constitution begins with its preamble, which summarizes the main principles that influence the articles that follow it. There is a few references paying homage to God because of the strong Islamic presence in the country. The ideas of universal suffrage and anti-discrimination are included as a means to show the more prevalent ideas of a democracy. Language of a more unified government is added to show that the central government shall be powerful and not one that allows more power to be given to the states making them prone to disobeying federal law. This idea comes from the weakness of the U.S. central government during the time of its articles of confederation. The states were at war with each other, did not obey federal law, and as a result countries did not trust doing business with such an unorganized state. I wanted to create a sense of nationalism in the preamble that stems from the Sumerian people overthrowing an iron fist authoritarian. Civic nationalism can sometimes be an appropriate choice for binding the people together as one nation;
Mesopotamia’s first invention was a form of writing called cuneiform which was written on clay tablets with a sharp reed called a stylus. This permitted for recording events and writing formal laws. The Sumerians, a civilization in Mesopotamia designed the wheel which was used to help transfer heavy objects to and from places. They also began constructing daggers, spears and chariots, which has led to their successful wars. The Mesopotamians were also responsible for the first laws and the discoveries of glass, sailboats, and ziggurats. With interest high in religion and mythology, Sumerians and their successors worshiped gods and goddesses just like Egyptians, Greeks, and Aegean cultures.
When analyzing ancient civilization and how it began, there are many elements and aspects that should be considered. Questions such as how did civilization begin? What lead to its creation? Where did it begin, and why in that particular location? Many of these questions can be examined and answered by researching what many believe is the world’s earliest civilization, Mesopotamia. It is widely believed that this region was chosen and supported one of the world’s first civilizations. This area was settled over 10,000 years ago by a group of people known as the Sumerians (Cunningham & Reich, 2010).
A group called the Sumerians dominated majority of Mesopotamia and left their legacy on the land. They created writing, built monuments, and developed a social structure. They established how the economy and how the government works. There was independent city-state, and each state had its own king. In these times, the people were very focused on religion and so in the center of every town was a temple dedicated to the chief god/goddess of the city.
Only the elites and scribes know how to read and write. The control of writing and the control of the legal system go hand in hand. Most people thought writing was supernatural because they could not understand the symbols. The majority of written texts discovered from ancient times were about economics and politics. In Mesopotamia, there are records of taxes, debts, hours workers worked, etc. This helped strengthen the bureaucracy. Writing was a double-edged sword. In ancient China, Emperor Qin Shihuangdi buried alive hundreds of scholars and destroyed their books because of their critique of his cruel war strategies.
... helped the architecture to have accurate measurements . Another civilization that also developed a system of writing was China. The written language could be easily to read and understand, but when they spoke it it was difficult to understand. This civilization had a big advantage with the system of writing because all parts of china everyone could learn the language even if they already spoke a different language. This helped make a great civilization because it unifies a large and diverse land and this helped to control it easier. One disadvantage it has is that the writing system has a lot of things to memorize. So if you were a wealthy kid and went to a good school you could memorize the major part of the language, but if you were in the lower class and went to a cheap school then you had trouble learning the language because they didn’t teach the whole language
Centuries before Julius Cesar, Galileo, Aristotle, Socrates, and albert Einstein; There was an ancient civilization that arose out of nowhere. They Settled upon the Tigris, and Euphrates Rivers, known as the fertile crest of Mesopotamia. These settlers are known as the Sumerians. The Sumerians were an agricultural society, who lived off their crops and the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers to trade goods. So when presented the terrible question “Why they existed?” The Sumerians believed that they existed to serve their gods by worship and dedicated work. Through the Sumerian Literature, architecture, and artwork the Sumerians let their purpose be known.
