On January 23, 1951 a hero named Chesley “Sully” Sullenberger was born.(“Editors,Chesley”) He had an impressive background. He went to school at U.S. Air Force Academy from 1969-1973, Sully then served as a fighter pilot in the U.S. Air Force until 1980 when he joined Pacific Southwest Airlines as a commercial pilot. Little did he know in 2009 he would be a hero to many.(“Editors,Chesley”) Chesley Sullenberger is a hero because he is honorable, brave, and intelligent.
January 15, 2009 a plane took off from New York’s LaGuardia and on its way to Charlotte, North Carolina. (“Editors,Chesley”) (“Airplane Crash-lands”)Part way through the flight a flock of geese hit the plane, damaging both engines and the thrust no longer worked. Immediately,
Sully called air traffic control to discuss his options.(“Airplane Crash-lands”)Answering the call,Patrick Harten assessed the situation and gave Sully two options.(“Robbins, Liz”) He could either turn around a go back to LaGuardia or he could go to Teterboro Airport in New Jersey.(“Airplane Crash-lands”) Both landing areas were the same distance apart but Sully new neither was close enough for them to make it. Sully thought for more options and he chose to ditch the airplane in the hudson river.(“Airplane Crash-lands”) Informing Patrick of his plan he turned to the Hudson River. Patrick had asked him to repeat himself, although he heard him clearly, he couldn’t wrap his mind around the idea. Despite knowing Sully’s idea, Patrick cleared an airway in both airports. Then, the plane disappeared from his radar and Harten’s heart sunk.(“Robbins, Liz”) Although the risk was high, Sully told the passengers to brace for impact and he landed the plane. The maneuver was a success and Sully had saved the 155 people aboard the plane. (“Editors,Chesley”) Even though Sully had returned those people safely, the NTSB (National Transportation Safety Board) didn’t think he made the right decision. So they used a simulation of what had happened and attempted to go to one of the airports instead. The simulation was successful but only if Sully had a few moments to make the decision. (“CBSNews”) After they retried and found if given time to decide, making it to the airport was not an option. The trial was found that Sully had made the right decision. This one man had managed to avoid a catastrophic event. (“CBSNews”) This is why I believe Chesley Sullenberger is a hero because he is honorable, brave, and intelligent.
The Avro Arrow was Canada’s broken dream and it could have been one of Canada’s greatest aeronautical achievements. The cancelation of the Avro Arrow was a huge mistake that set Canada’s aviation industry back, which resulted in a Brain Drain to USA and was an act of Canada bowing to USA pressure. The Avro Arrow, an advanced, supersonic, twin-engine, all-weather interceptor jet aircraft developed by A.V. Roe of Canada in 1949, could have been many things. It might have become the fastest plane in the world, our best defense against Soviet bombers, the catalyst to propel Canada to the forefront of the aviation industry. Instead, it became a $400-million pile of scrap metal, and the stuff of legends. If A.V. Roe Ltd. remained and the Arrow flew today, Canada’s aircraft industry would be a very different thing indeed.
Billy Bishop’s path to greatness was not an easy one. He encountered many challenges throughout his young life that recognized him as a fiercer fighter pilot and a true hero. Billy Bishop faced an incredibly tough task to achieving his dream of becoming Canada’s greatest ace. Bishop had a tough life at Owen Sound Collegiate. He would be the subject to many jokes and preferred the company of girls. However his anger and fists won him acceptance on the school ground. He was a good natured boy born on February 8th, 1984. In 1911, at the age of 17, his parents sent him Royal Military College in Kingston, Ontario due to his mediocre marks in school which his father knew would not allow him to get accepted to the University of Toronto. He was not an academic student and in his third year of high school was found cheating on a class exam which would later be the subject to many controversie...

The Age of Heroes during the 1920s was a period in United States history where athletes and other record-breakers became national icons. Largely able to happen because of the increase in newspaper readership and radio coverage of sports events, athletes such as Babe Ruth and Gertrude Ederle gained national recognition for their skills in their chosen game. Although, heros during this age were not always athletes. Charles Lindbergh instantly became a nationally recognized figure in May of 1927 when he flew solo from Long Island, New York to Paris France in thirty-three hours. The expansion of the media’s coverage, enabled American citizens across the country to be apart of sports and record-breaking events during the Age of

January 15, 2003 he was flying a passenger plane and suddenly hit a flock of geese. Hitting the flock of geese made the plane go haywire and start malfunctioning. Jon Daly was a great American hero and during his exploits in the war he became a changed man. He put himself in harms way countless times for the greater good of his squad. Even though he may have been less than extraordinary as a child and in his adolescent years he showed that he truly was a man for others. He showed that with the right attitude anyone can make something of themselves even if they have been less than great as a child. Jon Daly was a misfit as a child but through proper habit formation he made himself into a respectable man that would put himself in harms way for the good of his squad.
Evel Knievel was not afaid of failure, even whe he crashed a lot, but that is what makes him a brave daredevil. “Robert Craig Knievel Jr. died in November after 69 years, which by all means is more than twice as long as it should have taken him” (Time).

The dictionary definition of a hero is someone who is admired of their achievements or their noble qualities. To me, the definition of a hero is someone who helps people and is caring. In this world there are so many people mistaken for heroes. One example of a “hero” is O.J. Simpson. O.J was best known for being the running back of the Buffalo Bills and was nicknamed “The Juice”. Although he was a Heisman Trophy winner he was also a major suspect of a murder case involving his wife and her new boyfriend. Even though all the evidence was there he was found innocent and never went to jail. OJ Simpson was an amazing football player, but he should be judged by everything he does not just his achievements. One person I think is a hero in all realms is Walter Payton. A little after Simpson retired Walter came and played football for the Chicago Bears. Very quickly into his career he was given the nickname “Sweetness” which describes his personality in one word. Walter inspired his team and community. Every Christmas him and his wife helped the underprivileged children around the Chicago area. Walter said “I want to be the guy who is always remembered for giving his all whenever he was on the field”. I think that this quote shows his respectfulness of the sport and his kindness for others.
Richard Dick Winter was an officer of the United States Army and a decorated war veteran. Winter earned two Badges and thirteen medals. The badges he won were the Combat Infantryman Badge. Also he won the Parachutist Badge with 2 combat stars. One of the most important reasons he won the Parachutist Badge is because during the War of France, Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands, Winters made a fast decision to parachute down to the ground as there were missiles and other explosive flying in different directions.Once people found out what he was going to do, it was too late. He had already jumped. He had made an impact on this world because he sacrificed his life to save our country and this world. That's why I think he made a huge impact on the world.
One of many ways he was proved he was a hero was when he helped many families with disabilities. With his organization ASODISVALLE, he has helped over 1,000 families who have someone with a disability (www.cnn.com). He wants to prove to families with this buisness that even though their children may have a disability, that doesn’t mean they can’t succeed in life (www.cnn.com). He wanted to
It was the afternoon of July 25, 2000. One hundred passengers, most of them German, boarded the Concorde Air France Flight 4590. This was a trip of a lifetime for many people, as Concorde was restricted to the wealthy class of people. The excitement in people was cut short by the unfortunate delay in flight, because of maintenance in one of its engines. The passengers boarded the plane a couple of hours after the scheduled time. Finally, it was cleared for taxi on runway 26-Right. The pilots lined the aircraft parallel to the runway. A tragic accident, however, was about to befall.
On January 15, 2009, United Airlines flight 1549 ditched into the Hudson river immediately after take off from New York’s LaGuardia Airport only five passengers were seriously injured and seventy-eight passengers reported minor injuries. It was brilliant piloting of Captain Chesley Sullenberger that saved everyone from a horrendous death but how did this event occur? From reports and interviews, the aircraft suffered damage to both of the aircraft’s engines. The cause of the failure to both engines, was non other than a flock of Canada Geese that flew into both engines, during the first two minutes of the flight.
