(1) Suicide is “the action or an act of intentionally killing oneself.” Suicide has been an issue worldwide in society today. “Suicide takes the lives of nearly 30,000 Americans every year” (SAVE 1). Some suicide attempts are caused by “depression, mental health, the death of a loved one, a serious loss such as a loss of a job, house, or money, drug abuse, alcohol abuse, and bullying” ( Caruso 1). Suicide is an escape from pain that people have been suffering. It has been easier for people to end their excruciating life than having to live in misery for years. “A growing body of studies has demonstrated that alcohol and drug abuse are second only to depression and other mood disorders as the most frequent risk factors for suicide” (Wohlenhaus 127). Some signs and symptoms of depression include “difficulty concentrating, remembering details, making decisions, thoughts of suicide, overeating, and aches or pains, headaches, cramps, or digestive problems that do not ease even with treatment” (NIMH, depression 3). Alcohol was the greatest common substance found in suicide victims when tested. “Studies showed that a type of psychotherapy called cognitive therapy reduced the rate of repeated suicide attempts by 50 percent during a year of follow-up” (Wohlenhaus 8). Therapy is an alternative that can help prevent suicide. Presently, news media has been reporting suicides, which is either preventing or causing suicides but this can be easily be solved by reporting safely. (2) Suicide should be announced in the media because it is making people become more well-informed of what’s going on in today’s society. Bain, a suicide prevention worker had spoken, "I think that for the average person that struggles with suicidal ideation, hearin... ... middle of paper ... ...hould be used instead of posting photos or videos of the location or method of death, grieving family, friends, memorials or funerals” (NIMH suicide 1). If photos or videos of the victim’s death were displayed on the media, it would increase the possibility of numerous deaths. Suicide prevention hotlines should be included as well. By informing suicide cautiously, this can enlighten others and reduce the amount of deaths. (5) Thus, suicides being reported in the media are either leading to or abstaining suicides. This situation can be solved by making people more aware of what is going on and reporting safely. Suicide being publicized leads to copycat suicide but on the other hand it informs the public so they become more mindful and attentive. Broadcasting suicide on the media may indeed avert suicide but it is more likely to promote suicide and cause casualties.

Cheng, Andrew, Keith Hawton, Charles Lee, and Tony Chen. " Influence of Media Reporting of the Suicide of a Celebrity on Suicide Rates: A Population-based Study. "
Suicide is the eleventh most common cause of death in the United States. According to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, a person takes their own life once every fourteen minutes in the United States (American Foundation for Suicide Prevention [AFSP], 2011). Still, with suicide rates so high, suicide is a taboo topic in our society. Though suicide is intended to end one person’s pain, it causes an immeasurable amount of pain and suffering to loved ones close to the deceased.

According to Phillips (1974), after the media overly publicize a suicide story, for 10-15 days after the story there is an increase in copycat suicides. In addition, there is a strong relationship between media reports on the suicide of famous people and copycat suicides. In fact, in the month right after the suicide of a famous person if the media publicize the suicide story, there is an increase in suicides (Wasserman, 1984). For example, during the month of Marilyn Monroe’s suicide there were 303 reported suicides related to Marilyn Monroe 's story (Stack, 2003). Finally yet importantly, media reports have the power to influence copycat effects on the method of suicide. Current research has a few examples of media reports of charcoal burning suicides that generated a copycat effect on subsequent charcoal burning deaths (Yang 2012). In addition, current research has interviews of patients who admitted to have tried to overdose with painkillers after having watched a television report of a case of suicide with painkillers. In other words, in the case of copycat suicide, media reports have the power to influence not only the decision to commit suicide but also the method of
Normal reactions to pain of loss, rejection, or disappointment and some which are more extreme reactions that can lead them in minor hopelessness, is teen suicide. When a teen commits suicide, everyone is affected. Family members, friends, teammates, neighbors, and sometimes even those who didn’t know the teen well enough might experience feelings of grief, confusion, guilt, and the sense that if only they had done something differently, the suicide could have been prevented.
One aspect of suicide is the impact it has on other people. When someone commits the act people who were close to the person are always affected somehow. In the book, 13 Reasons Why, Clay says, “I’m starting to understand. I’m starting to see what Hannah means. And that opens up a black hole in the pit of my stomach (pg.52).” When Clay is listening to the tapes he can’t help but feel guilt for what people did to Hannah. He can’t help but feel sorry for her. While a suicide could cause people to sleep uneasy it can also inspire copycat behavior. According to “13 Reasons Why and Suicide Contagion” the author states, “Research has shown that excessive media coverage of suicides of celebrity figures actually has led to an increase in suicide attempts
The key to understanding suicide and self-destructive behavior comes from the awareness of how some destructive thought processes control the need to end one’s life. Being cognizant of how these thoughts are veiled and can lead to a self-destructive downward spiral, enables clinicians to better assess risk and design interventions for depressed and suicidal clients. According to Nock and Banajii (2007) worldwide, suicides among adolescents have increased dramatically averaging one million each year. Many teenagers experience strong feelings of stress, confusion and self-doubt in the process of growing up. Pressures to succeed, the economy, and the environment can intensify these feelings. At present, self-report has been unsuccessful in the prevention of teen suicide; the tools available to help health care professionals detect potential suicide ideation are not sufficiently reliable (Nock & Banajii, 2007). In fact, Nock and Benajii stated that often during therapy, suicidal ideation may not be present and surfaces once the patient goes home or oftentimes, the patient will deliberately hide the urge to end his life. Because the existing tools rely solely on subjective statements, it is very challenging to decipher congruency between what is verbalized and what remains unsaid (Nock & Banajii, 2007).

Suicide is one of the biggest reason of the death in my country. Actually it’s the leading cause of death to teenage groups to 30ths in South Korea. Pressure from school works and grade, difficulties to getting job, social isolation, and depression are the main factor why people kill themselves. It’s the big issue and problem that people should care about. I personally gives a big attention to this topic because I’ve known a lot of people committing suicide. Not only poor people but also a nationally well-known TV star, former president in Korea, an elder student when I was in middle school and a person who is really close to me. Even though a lot of people committing suicide, I think there’s a lack of attention about it. I strongly believe that
Suicide has become a critical, national problem and the extent of this is mind-boggling. Suicides have been proven to be one of the leading causes of death among college students. According to Webters dictionary “suicide is the act killing oneself on purpose”. It derived from the Latin sui, meaning “self”, and caedere, which means “to kill”. But this is just a definition, because an actual suicide holds different meanings to people such as tragic, shocking, a relief, a cry for help, a shame, heroic, the right choice, punishment, revenge, protest, anger, a mistake, desperate, hurtful and many more. But why do people, like college students who have their entire future ahead of them, simply give up hope and turn their heads away from life and commit suicide. There are several causes of suicide, recent incidents of suicide on college campuses, warning signs from a suicidal. I blame the Constitution and the United States law for not taking any hard initiative on the subject of suicide. I also impose the choice of the media, which is reflecting and portraying suicide towards a wrong direction. However most important questions remain: can the growing epidemic of suicide be solved, what are communities doing about it and what can they do to help?
Many live due to the fear of death, many die due to the fear of living. Suicide is the act of ending one’s own life as a result of emotional and spiritual problems. Suicide, to some, is seen as a permanent escape. The Church itself argues against suicide. Life is borrowed and is not for one to just give away, God is the only one who can judge life. Suicide should not be committed because it infringes our relationship with others and ultimately God. Suicide is a selfish act all on its own.
A young, teenage girl sits with her friends, talking, laughing, and making jokes. She seems completely normal and happy, even. What people don’t know is that this is nothing but a mask covering the loneliness that seems to run through her veins, and the unexplainable sadness that never goes away. She fears speaking of it, of admitting the uncontrollable hatred she feels for everything about herself, so much that she contemplates ending it all. The fact is, suicide is the third leading cause for death in people under the age of twenty-five. Our country needs to stop seeing this as a casual thing. Depression, anxiety, and suicide in youth are real and serious issues that we need to be more aware of in today’s society.
Suicide is a major leading cause of death in adolescents and young adults. Males, on average, are more likely to commit suicide than females and married people are the least likely to commit suicide. For this assignment, I chose the topic of suicide. Suicide is a broad topic and I decided to pick this issue because of how well known it is. Many individuals avoid talking about suicide because society has built up a stigma around it making it difficult to discuss and to support those struggling who reach out for help in an attempt find an answer, one which doesn’t end up being one to take their own life. Suicide is a social issue, which opens up a large discussion. Is it right? Is it selfish?
