“1.8% of dentists in the years 1989-2004 committed suicide” (citation). Suicide in the field of dentistry is a huge problem in today’s society. There are many reasons as to why someone would take their life but the most common are depression, stress, or substance abuse. Dentist have to manage many things that can be very stressful on a daily basis, Randy Lang. DDS, D.Ortho has reasons why suicide rate in dentist are very high, and one can conclude that stress and depression is why the suicide rate in dentists is very high. Many people suffer from depression and other mental and physical illnesses but it is more prevalent in dentist.

DDS, D.Ortho is an orthodontist and degree in dental surgery. He believes isolation plays a huge roll as to why dentist become depressed. They tend to work alone which cause them to feel isolated and have no body to talk to their problems about. When people can vent and talk to others that can be very helpful in a stressful situation and sometimes even make the issue go away. Someone else’s perspective on a problem can make a person take a step back and realize that the problems they are dealing with may not be as bad as they seem. Another reason he states is stress of perfection. Dental school stresses perfection and once people graduate and become dentist they do not realize that they cannot always be prefect. When patients complain about the service they received the dentist feels like he/she has failed. When a dentist’s schedule gets messed up they usually try to fix it as fast as they can and that can lead to them skipping breaks during the day and skipping meals which is very bad for the body. In order for a person to be mentally and physically at their best at all times they must eat. Dentist have been taught that they must be perfect for so long that when they actually aren’t they get stressed and depressed. This could be the reason why the suicide rate of a dentist is double that of the normal …show more content…
The American schooling system could be one to blame for this problem. Kids in their early to mid-twenties should not have to come out of college over $200,000 in debt, that is ridiculous. The amount of pressure that person has on their shoulders is more than anyone should have on them at their age. Once they start their practice they are basically forced to succeed instantly and if they do not then that’s when the stress and depression sets in. When that happens it is hard to recover when isolated. Dentists should try coping with their problems with talking to a professional psychologist. This will allow them to figure out steps to get themselves together and get back on the right track to be successful. Dental school also should stop stressing perfection so much. It is not ok to teach them that they can mess up all the time but pushing perfection is too much. Nobody is perfect no matter what profession they are in, everyone makes mistakes, it is part of life. Teaching them that it is ok to make mistakes sometimes may take a little stress off of them, which will allow them to perform better, then can lead to less stress, and eventually less suicides in
All the various factors that lead me to dentistry amounted to just a part of my decision to become a dentist, the other half of my decision came from the simple question, “(w)ill this be a satisfying career for me?” A satisfying career, to me, is defined by whether or not I can use my career as a means to assist others and experience a sense of accomplishment and self-gratification in helping others. The notion of a satisfying career was one that came through personal experiences. Being a former Medicaid recipient, I was thankful to those that worked in the public health sector to help those in need, including myself and my family. Through my past experiences, I felt obligated to reciprocate the resources and assistance that I had received. At the end of my career, I hope to reflect back on my career and experience a sense of accomplishment and fulfillment for having helped others throughout my career; this is what will amount to successful career, from my point of view.
I can remember coming to school and hearing all my classmates talk about how much they hated going to the dentist. Going to the dentist was one thing that I have always loved to do. The sound of the tools and just the smell of the clinic was never a bad atmosphere to me, I actually enjoy the dentist. Laura was my first dental hygienist from as far back as I can remember, and she had the whitest teeth I have ever seen! I have honestly came to the conclusion that I am obsessed with teeth. With this being said, I have always felt and known that I wanted to be a dental hygienist. I am currently in my first year here at Community College getting my preq for dental hygiene. I always get the question, “Why would you want to look in somebody’s mouth all day?” After I hear this question and then I start thinking to myself. I want to be a dental hygienist because first of all someone has got to do it and secondly, I think smiles light up rooms and if I can help get more smiles in this world then that is what I am going to do. With seeking my career in dental hygiene I have great hopes of being able to help people understand and find compassion in caring for their teeth and inspiring them as Laura inspired me.
Dentistry as a profession over the years has evolved rapidly in light of new scientific evidence. Rapidly evolving science and technology have implemented changes within dentistry as evidenced by new standards and guidelines being produced by nationally recognised associations including National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE), Faculty of General Dental Practice (FGDP) and Scottish Intercollegiate Guidelines Network (SIGN) in Scotland, in provision of new scientific evidence. The latest standards and guidelines produced, endorse everyday clinical practice through evidence based dentistry (REF). All dental professionals as part of continued professional development are expected to keep to date on relevant guidelines and knowledge related to their practice (REF). This is supported by the General Dental Council who state all clinicians must maintain their professional knowledge and competence throughout their working career (REF).
Healthcare is a necessity to sustain society. Dentistry is an area of healthcare that I feel extremely passionate about because access to proper dental care is limited, especially in the underserved communities. As an African American, I want to become a dentist and healthcare provider in the hopes of helping patients and adding to the diversification of the field. With a growing minority population in the United States, it has become apparent that there is a shortage of black dentists. This is problematic because underrepresented minorities are in great need of access to culturally connected dentists who understand their clinical needs as much as their lives and their challenges. I believe that when the profession includes a range of ethnicities
It is a vital role of a dentist to prevent the dental problems in order to decrease the number of oral disease.
Modern philosophy stipulates that the will to preserve one’s life as long as possible is a fundamental aspect of basic logic and reason. The will to survive as long as possible is described as an innate and natural instinct of being human. Based on this philosophical reasoning, it is inherently illogical and irrational to willingly put an end to one’s life. Sociologists, psychologists and psychiatrists have also condemned suicide by stating that it is associated with mental, social and physical ill-being and that those who commit suicide are not in a rational state of mind. These scientific and philosophical approaches to suicide have contributed to formally documenting suicide as a wrong, irrational and immoral act. The problem is that these approaches see suicide in a generalized manner and do not take into account sub-types and different kinds of suicide such as euthanasia for example, which is physician-assisted and intentional suicide in the case of a terminally ill patient with no possibility of recovering from his or her medical condition. Imagine waking up every day tired, and drowsy. Having to go to school every day being pushed around and having other children make you feel like you’re worthless but you are actually feeling worthless, hopeless, and careless. You have no place where you can go and just be peaceful nowhere to go to just be free. At home there are problems, At school there are problems, everywhere u go u have that feeling of sadness, worthlessness, and hopelessness. Having those feeling of harming yourself to take the inside pain away and having thoughts about taking you life away. Suicidal teen’s feelings, what caused them to become suicidal, and how they overcome the feelings?
A problem today that should be addressed is suicide among teens and young adults. Several lives are taken every year due to several unknown and known factors. Terribly shameful knowing all the help and hope that’s out there for victims, while on the other hand none of the victims may have ever even known a proper way to seek help (Miller). Risk factors leading up to suicide (also the known factors) include but not limited to: mental illness, childhood issues, isolation and loneliness, bullying and broader issues such as loss and personal pain (Bower). Not only should suicide be looked at as a big deal it should be looked at for what it truly is; “the third leading cause of death for ages 15-24 (Bower).” The problem does not stop when no longer mentioned, that only leaves room for more problems to occur. Not everyone with suicidal thoughts is willing to seek help, making the problem too common, something our society must deal with more and more today (Teen). Suicide is an important issue that should not be overlooked or merely talked

All individuals at some point in their life have to deal with some kind of stress. This stress can cause multiple problems with an individual if not dealt with. When dealing with stress, people’s behavior changes, and can sometimes be the cause of negative behavior. One thing that stress can lead too, if not dealt with, is depression. Many individuals have stress in their home life and their professional life. Stress at home can carry over into the professional environment, which can cause work to be difficult. This can cause major disruptions in productivity and can be detrimental to that individual. If it has a detrimental outcome, this can cause the individual to go into deeper depression. No matter how stressful a situation is, the individual

Some people may wonder, why dentistry? Dentistry is often viewed as maybe boring, or an odd profession to aspire to go into. As I have grown up I have always known that I at least would like to go into the health field, and help people In any way that I can, however
Many live due to the fear of death, many die due to the fear of living. Suicide is the act of ending one’s own life as a result of emotional and spiritual problems. Suicide, to some, is seen as a permanent escape. The Church itself argues against suicide. Life is borrowed and is not for one to just give away, God is the only one who can judge life. Suicide should not be committed because it infringes our relationship with others and ultimately God. Suicide is a selfish act all on its own.
A variety of factors play a part in why someone is depressed. It could be caused by any combination of factors that relate to physical health, life events, family history, environment, genetic vulnerability, and biochemical disturbance. (WebMD). Depression can be genetic, meaning that it can run in families. Someone with a close relative who suffers from depression is more likely to become depressed. A few examples could be a child whose father passed away in Afghanistan, who is going through a period of loss and may become depressed. Or imagine going to school every day and having someone bully you. They make fun of everything about you, from your hair to your shoes. You get sad and upset. It keeps happening and the feelings begin to get worse. This is one example of how depression can manifest
Depression is probably the most common reason why people take away their life. Feeling like they do not belong in this world anymore because of so much pain. Cheatle said, “Especially depression, are prevalent in people
