In Suffer Love, the main character, Sam, is unsure about his feelings towards Hadley. He completely falls for her at first, but once he finds out she is a St. Clair he is apprehensive about a future relationship together. There are many possible answers to the question of why he feels this way. One could be because he is not currently looking for a relationship. His dad, whom he was very close to him, left the family six months ago. He packed his bags for Boston and disappeared from Sam’s life. This was all because Sam’s mother was caught cheating with another man. Sam feels that his dad left because the two children of the family, Sam, and Livy, reminded him of the pain. Sam also does not want a relationship because he is having a hard time with the …show more content…
separation of his family. Before his dad left, his parents fought a lot.
This quote from the book demonstrates an example: “Mom and Dad weren’t talking to me, and when they weren’t alternating between screaming and tears, they were smothering Livy like they were afraid the air in the house would kill her” (Herring Blake 131). This damaged him emotionally, so he started seeing a girl named Nicole. When he moved to Nashville, he could not see her anymore, providing one more example of why he does not want a relationship. Sam is also wary about pursuing his feelings for Hadley because she reminds him of Jason St. Clair. He is the man who Sam’s mom cheated with, and Hadley is his daughter. A quote from Suffer Love that shows his feelings is “Before that moment, a little part of me still hoped I was wrong. Hadley St. Clair wasn’t his daughter. But seeing them both together like that, sucking up the same air, felt like a punch in the gut from my best friend or something” (Herring Blake 103-104). Sam refuses to forgive Mr. St. Clair for his poor choices. His mom also does not want him and Hadley to hang out, which reinforces his unsure feelings about what to think of Hadley. Although he cannot seem to forgive her dad, he tries to forgive
Hadley. Sam knows that it is not her fault that she is the daughter of Jason St. Clair. His sister Livy also tries to harbor no grudge against Hadley. In conclusion, Sam is unsure about having feelings for Hadley because he is not looking for a relationship and because she reminds him of Jason St. Clair. Nevertheless, the St. Clairs still have ruined Sam’s family. I would have to give myself 13.5/14 because my quotes from the book showed the characters feelings and thoughts, and they helped answer the question of why Sam does not want to have feelings for Hadley.

Mania is an excessive enthusiasm or desire, typically with a negative intention, and that is what Roger Chillingworth suffered from. Throughout the novel, he goes out of his way to make the life of Arthur Dimmesdale awful. He tortures Dimmesdale from the inside out, psychologically outsmarting him at every turn. Chillingworth claims that Hester is the reason he has acted so awfully, but it is not common for others to agree with him. In The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne, Chillingworth’s deep desire for revenge is understandable, as he was a decent person before he found out about the affair, but then turned into a maniac in his quest to exact revenge on Dimmesdale.
Miss Strangeworth’s character can be analyzed by considering what she does, narrator says about her, and how the characters interact with her. In the story “Possibility of Evil” the example is how people act in front of someone and how they act when they are not around others. People think Miss Strangeworth is a nice lady, but people don’t know the true side of her.

The couples share a certain amount of love for each other but the disconnection was stronger. The protagonist’s disconnection is evident because her husband treats her like a little girl instead of a wife when he takes her “ …in her arms and called [her] a blessed little goose” (p121). The Mallard’s disconnection is also evident because her husband’s “face that had never looked save with love upon her, fixed and gray and dead” (p 15). This is not the emotion a wife wants to feel from her husband.

The first aspect of Willy's character that affected his failure was his pride. Willy's pride caused him to in many situations make very poor and unethical decisions, that affected both himself and his family. An example of this is through the conversation between Willy and Charley “CHARLEY: ‘You want a job?’ WILLY: ‘I got a job, I told you that. [After a slight pause] What the hell are you offering me a job for?’ CHARLEY: ‘Don’t get insulted.’ WILLY: Don’t insult me.”(DOAS: pg x) Willy does not take the offer which is an obvious example of a poor decision. He makes this decision because he sees this generous whole hearted gesture as a kind of pitiful handout that his pride restricts him from taking. By not taking this handout willy puts his self pride infront of
When the plague began, people kept their hope in love alive. They initially maintained their ideals, and honestly believed that the separation was temporary. When given the option of having their loved ones return to Oran, most people showed their love as they "realized the danger to which they were exposing their loved ones, and resigned themselves to enduring separation", so as to ensure the health of their beloveds, they prove their capacity to love despite the pain of the loneliness of the pestilence. Castel is an exception to this; when his wife and he, were confronted with the plague they realized the strength of their love, and decided that life was not worth living without the other, thus she returns to Oran. In the same way, Rambert believes that he is a "stranger in this town" and wants more than anything to be reunited with his girlfriend. He believes that he was "put on earth to be with a woman", and despite the mental health challenges that arose due to the plague, his ability to love was initially not altered. Thus at the beginning of the "disgusting infestation", people remained stalwart in their ability to love, however this absolute belief, faltered slightly for some as the novel proceeded.
Josephina Niggli wrote about forbidden love with two characters, Pepe Gonzalez and Sarita Calderon, in the short story “The Street of the Cañon.” Pepe Gonzalez is a very mysterious man. Pepe is also very daring for coming into the party of his enemies. In the story, Pepe came and made eye contact with Sarita, knowing that she was the mayor’s daughter, went over to her. Sarita does not really show emotion about different things. For example, when she thought that she might have just danced with the devil, she was very calm and was not freaking out. This shows that Sarita might have been scared of what happened. She has a very calm, scared personality. Sarita was also very flirty towards Pepe. She used her fan to flirt and then went to hide next
