Secret Life of Bees Essay The fear of the unknown is fundamental to humanity. It drives people to act, to lash out at the terrifying unpredictability that comes with living. Lily, the protagonist of the acclaimed book, the Secret Life of Bees, exemplifies this throughout the story. The Secret Life of Bees tells the story of 14-year-old Lily Owens, who escapes to Tiburon, South Carolina, with her Black caretaker Rosaleen in order to run away from her cruel father. Desiring to find the truth about her mother, Lily stays with the Boatwright Sisters, a Black trio of sisters whom she suspects can lead her to the truth. Lily demonstrates naivete and ignorance of Black People in her dialogue at the beginning stages of the book, signifying how her narrow-minded views stem from a place of unawareness. When Rosaleen is jailed for pouring snuff juice on three racists, Lily’s reaction to the jail and policemen is a sense of trust, shown in this quote: “‘Come on Rosaleen,’ I said. ‘What can they [the racists] do to you with a policeman right here?’ That was when the dealer lifted the flashlight over his head, then down, smashing into Rosaleen’s forehead” (35). To make Rosaleen apologize to the racists, the dealer smashes his flashlight on Rosaleen’s head, later stating that he would make her ‘black a**’ pay one way or another. Lily states that she believes the racists are incapable of doing harm while in the presence of a police officer, demonstrating how she still holds trust in the police force to uphold justice. The situation illustrates how sheltered Lily really is, that she’s trusting enough to believe the police are dependable after seeing how they jailed Rosaleen for ‘assaulting’ the three
