When I initially found out that we would be required to make an appointment for a success consultation, I was not expecting the experience to be helpful. After hearing that these meetings have been designed to help students improve their performance in their classes and enhance their study skills, among other things, I was convinced that this would be a cookie cutter experience for everyone. However, I was pleasantly surprised to find out that this consultation would not be focused on the stereotypical study and success skills such as going to class and not procrastinating. Instead, it presented me with the opportunity to reflect on my overall success throughout my college career thus far, and gave me the opportunity to set long term and short
There are various definitions of success. It can be defined as the as one’s accomplishment of a desired aim or goals. Subsequently, success can also be defined as the attainment of wealth, position or honors. Therefore, success varies from one person to another; it can be a personal aspect as having a pregnancy, academic success, business or political success. However, for one to attain success, whether in an academic, business, political or a private setting, one must put in place strategies that will aid him or her and act as a bridge towards the accomplishment of success. A good strategy must give an overall direction of the intended goals, it is within the sources and opportunities of the desired goal and it advances
College isn’t like high school where you could just be happy all the time hoping that you’ll wing it to be successful or to barely pass your classes to graduate. What is success or how can I be successful? That’s the question I asked myself on the first day of college. Success in college is the main goal of college students, but finding it is another subject. Most students think that to be successful in college is to get good grades, which is true. But the question is how you will attain that. There are a lot of ways to accomplish your goals and come out on top.
Therapy Analysis The purpose of this paper is to examine the efficacy of my work as a co-therapist during the fifth session with the simulated couple Katy and Michelle. I will discuss our therapy agenda and the goals we hope to attain during the session. It is prudent to begin by giving a brief outline of the couple’s present problem and the patterns of dysfunction that I have identified within their relationship. In my opinion, it is the therapist’s job to recognize patterns and behaviors that disrupt the intimate bond between the partners.
My reflection report will be on how to teach a clinical skill, which could be done either by the simulation training “workshops” or in hospital settings. Any reflection report is basically an evaluation of a person’s records of certain findings about certain topic or experience
My experience in mental health clinical was very different from any other clinical I had before. In a mental health clinical setting, I am not only treating client’s mental illnesses, I am also treating their medical problems such as COPD, diabetes, chronic renal failure, etc. Therefore, it is important to prepare for the unexpected events. In this mental health clinical, I learned that the importance of checking on my clients and making sure that they are doing fine by performing a quick head-to toes assessment at the beginning of my shift. I had also learned that client’s mental health illness had a huge impact on their current medical illness.
Chapters two, five and six focused mainly on the helping relationship and the core values, empathy, and probing and summarizing as helpful skills. These three chapters seemed to flow into each other nicely.
Group therapy is considered one of the most resourceful forms of therapy. The benefits to group therapy can be both cost-effective and a great means of support (Corey, Corey & Corey, 2014). The process of experiencing ideas and viewpoints expressed by your peers allows group members to become more susceptible to the counseling procedure. Group counseling also helps individuals to feel a sense of belonging due to similar situations and experiences shared by the group. The sense of support from group members can be an excellent means towards developing long-lasting relationships and developing communication skills needed to move forward during the counseling phase. In this paper, I will discuss my experiences throughout the group-counseling phase.
Success only truly comes with being happy. Happiness and success are the accomplices of one another. Someone cannot have accompanies without the other. Happiness brings success, and success brings even more happiness. Success, in the dictionary, is defined as the achievement of something desired planned or attempted. Therefore, success cannot be judged by anyone than oneself. It is a personal thing. It is the realization of goals, desires or plans made by one 's self. It is not measurable and yet is something we always use to compare others or appraise someone 's worth. Success, in one form or another, is something that someone should always be striving for. For some people it is something they will do subconsciously, and for others it will be something they will constantly labor for. Because success is something that is different for everyone, it is best that they measure their personal success by their sense of self worth instead of others. To have succeeded is to have lived, as someone wanted; ' it is to have lived well and laughed
I was really nervous about doing this first practice recording. While I knew how I wanted to start the conversation, I was stressed out about the unknown that comes along with these sessions. I am constantly listening to my friends talk, but how I had to respond for the counseling session was very different than what I am typically used to. I usually give my friends my opinions and advice on how I would handle the situation. It was hard for me to just sit back and let my classmate talk. I wanted to respond to many of her statements, but I had to take a step back and really just listen. In these types of counseling sessions my thoughts and opinions are not important. Rather, the focus should only be on the person you are counseling.
The counseling session began with the introductions where I introduced myself as the counselor and later introduced my client. This stage is important in any counseling session since it is the time of exploration and focusing according to Gerard Egan as quoted by Wright (1998) in his essay on couselling skills. It is in this session that I was able to establish rapport and trust with my client in order to come up with a working and fruitful relationship with him. During this stage I made use of skills like questioning, where I would pose a question directly to my client, sometimes I would choose to just listen to what the client wanted to speak out while in some instances I would be forced to paraphrase the question if I felt the client did not understand the question I had asked previously. There were also other times when I would reflect through silence. During such a period, I got time to study the client and the information he had given. This being a difficult area, since some clients may not be able to volunteer information to you as the counselor, I decided to assure the client of confidentiality of any information he was willing to share with me with a few exceptions which I also told him about. Being open to him about the only times the information may not be confidential was part of my building rapport and establishing trust with him. I therefore, decided to ask the client what information he wanted to share with me and lucky enough he was ready to speak to me about different issues that he was going through.
Being in my Personal Development class there has been many success strategies from our On Course textbook. These strategies will be carried on in my life as a guide to my very own personal philosophy of success. After careful consideration the four most appropriate On Course success strategies that will be best of use to achieve success will be to discover self-motivation, master self-management, adopt lifelong learning, and accept personal responsibility. Success is everything you make it out to be, it is accomplishments of your own set of goals and dreams you wish to achieve.
After doing the lesson, I felt that many things went well. According to the class evaluations and observation, the class really enjoyed the 4 different explore sound stations. The stations allowed for self-discovery, but were also structured enough for the teacher to have control. Classmates also liked the pictures that went along with the vocabulary terms. I think we did well with monitoring the students. We made sure the students were ready to continue to the next thing by having them give us “a thumbs up/ thumps down”. Lastly, I thought we did a great job at starting the lesson off strong with an engaging activity with the various sounds played from a cellphone app. It caught their attention and got them curious as to what
This course opened my eyes to the importance of dialogue in ways that I had not previously considered. I did not know in counseling you should only talk 30 percent of the time and that the remaining 70 percent should be the counselee’s time to talk. My typical counseling sessions in the past were about 50/50 dialogue. I thought that the counselee needed my opinion. A majority of my sessions included this amount of dialogue, which I am now understanding was not helpful to those people. Even though several people did have great results due to our sessions, they will looked to me in the future for more answers to various problems. This made the counseling relationship more dependent on my advice rather than them talking out their problem
Even though the definition of “success” has a very nuanced meaning depending on its culture and context, highly successful people typically exhibit the same universal characteristics. For despite common belief, successful people are not affiliated with some exclusive club and it has to do more with attitude than superior I.Q intelligence. Therefore, many people have the ability to learn about how they can be successful and do better than they are now. Due to having the privilege of interacting with successful people on a daily basis, I gradually coined my own theory of success. In addition, interviewing successful college students for the basis of the EPE course project has managed to further support and strengthen my theory. Yet rather than just being applied to an academic setting like a college or school, theses theories can be slightly modified to be applied in other aspects of life as well. It should be worth emphasizing that exhibiting some of these traits are likely good indicators of being a successful person, however there are a lot more not mentioned. For due to their vast variety, it would be extremely difficult to talk about each of them individually. As a result, I have taken the liberty of grouping them into broader categories and have listed them in no particular order.
One aspect I found striking was the role of advice giving in counseling. Prior to this class, I knew that counselors did not typically give opinions or advice to lead a client in a certain direction. What I did not know was the entire reasoning behind this. A counselor might avoid giving advice so that a client learns to make his/her own decisions, does not become dependent on the counselor, and to ensure that a client will not later blame the counselor if the counselor’s advice did not turn out well. In this context, I have a better appreciation and understanding of why therapists refrain from telling the client what to do.
