Every day we study and work to seek success. Everybody want to be successful, but not everybody know how to achieve success. There are a lot of elements that affect success. Usually people think that success is come from individual thing, such as 10,000 hours of practice and motivation. Those factors are personal responsibility, they are the factors in people’s hand that can make success .Actually there are other factor that is outside of our control, but really affect our opportunities and success. According to Malcolm Gladwell, Carol Dweck and Daniel Pink; I found that these uncontrollable factors are ecology, growth mindset, Matthew effect and cultural legacy can have a positive effect on opportunities and success. We cannot choose our culture also. But our culture is also affect us in our road to success. Culture can be very little thing from the family and it is not necessary to be huge. In some research, if the parent go to college, the most of the kids will go to college too. My parent have a family business, so that I used to play with calculator, pen and ruler. And also because of my first language’s counting system, I can easily learn the number. This is how I know to do math since I was It is similar to ecology. People build themselves base on everything around them. I used to live in Viet Nam. In Viet Nam, I had to spend 10 hours at school from Monday to Friday. And it is not only six classes like United State, but twelfth. At tenth grade I have to study calculus which is university base math in United State. But it is not a bad thing. Because of that I actually can practice more skills which can help me a lot in my road to success. When I move to United State, I finished my high school in 2 years. It’s one of my hardest time. But I get used to the academic pressure in Vietnam, so I can go pass it easily. It is not mean American culture is bad. American education system is also help me a lot. In United State, we were taught to do everything step by step, instead of rushing like Asian way. It make me understand the problem more detail, which I was not taught in Viet Nam. Success isn’t always so easy. Sometimes there are risks and factors that play along to allow for growth. However; personal development is a lifelong process. It’s a way for individuals to assess their skills and qualities, and consider their aims in life to set goals in order to maximise their potential. In order to receive the best outcome; there may need to be obstacles and challenges in the way to prevent an easy route to reach the top in success.
I agree with Gladwell that hard work can lead to success. Too often we think success happens because someone has money or gets lucky. This is wrong. There are various definitions of success. It can be defined as the as one’s accomplishment of a desired aim or goals. Subsequently, success can also be defined as the attainment of wealth, position or honors. Therefore, success varies from one person to another; it can be a personal aspect as having a pregnancy, academic success, business or political success. However, for one to attain success, whether in an academic, business, political or a private setting, one must put in place strategies that will aid him or her and act as a bridge towards the accomplishment of success. This paper explores the factors involved in success in the teaching field regardless of the environment. The information is based on the interview of current teacher Jane Satrom and her experience with a variety of adversities as a long time educator such as attending professional learning community (PLC) and department planning period (DPP) meetings. Her responses to various questions are compared to written advice for success in the college textbook Peak Performance: Success in College and Beyond in order to verify which skills and strategies are necessary in order to succeed. Throughout our lives we all experience a variety of things that help us define what success means to us. Some people look at success in a materialistic sense, while others take a more spiritual approach. Regardless of the way we view success or the factors that influence that view, we each have our own very unique Personal Philosophy on the subject. Personally, my philosophy is that the implementation of success strategies is key to achieving what one chooses to define as success. I have found that the three most effective success strategies I can use for years to come are being a critical thinker, improving concentration, and being an active listener. All three of these strategies are very practical and relevant to both my educational and professional pursuits, and therefore have proven to be the most effective in regards to my Personal Philosophy of Success.
Angela Lee Duckworth claimed grit to be the key to success. During an interview, she defined grit as “the disposition to pursue very long-term goals with passion and perseverance.” (qtd in Raz). Duckworth also mentioned that she wanted “to emphasize the stamina quality of grit. Grit is sticking with things over the long term and then working very hard at it.” (qtd in Raz). “For the last 11 years, Angela Lee Duckworth of the University of Pennsylvania has been conducting groundbreaking studies on grit -- the quality that enables individuals to work hard and stick to their long-term passions and goals.” (Perkins-Gough). Grit may be seen in several of characteristics throughout others. Although we may have different characteristics, my brother and I both comprehend grit to be the key to success.

Ever since the times of the BC era, wealth had defined success (Definition of Success). A wealthy person of those times would be looked at as a superior being, they would be someone you’d show respect for. They were successful. Although that's the definition of success back then, does it mean something different now? Like every human being, and every past structure of society, the word evolves with time because society's’ values change. The definition of the word “success” was often considered as the achievement of wealth, but now it has become modernized to fit into today's society. Today, success is thought as an individual doing what makes them happy in life, generally doing their best, or even contributing positive things to the world to make it a better place (What does success mean).
The true definition of success is the accomplishment of an aim or purpose. Although, many people have different perceptions of success. Success is judged by the individuals themselves. Success can be defined in many ways including: wealth, happiness, fame, etc. Success can be anything from material goods to concepts. It all depends on your concept and how you achieve your goals. You have to have persistence within yourself. Varying on your profession, you will need a certain skill level. Your definition of success can be suitable best for you, but not for others. It is about truly not giving up, reaching your full potential, and self-fulfillment.
Is there someone you know that is wealthy and prominent? Do they demonstrate the characteristics of a successful person in today’s society? Media today has effectively convinced our society into accepting an untrue, even possibly hazardous definition of success. Even though Webster’s dictionary defines success as “achieving wealth, respect, and fame,” the definition of success is different for everyone. Society wants us to accept that having money, having big house, and owning multiple cars is the key to happiness, and henceforth, success. This is a lie; success is not having a large amount of money nor does it have to deal with fame.
Happiness, what is it, and why do we strive to achieve it so persistently? Happiness in some points of view is portrayed as the state that is derived from self-awareness of a benefiting action or moment taking place. What of the moments that are not beneficial? Can a person still find moments of happiness and success in discord, a little glimmer of light shining from the deep recesses of our own consciousness? Plucking it from a mere moment, achieved from money, or is it so much more, happiness is the precipice that all strive to gain to better perceive their success. As a person lives, they are in a constant struggle to be happy. For instance, even the United States Constitution makes reference to the idea that every person has the inalienable right to pursue happiness. This was the resulting outcome of the enlightenment from France, spilling out into the rest of the world from 1650 through 1800. This revolutionized the idea that every single person has the inalienable right to happiness or in different views the right to succeed. As to how one peruses or conjures their happiness that is an entirely different concept and completely up to their preferred preference, but it is something that a person needs to find on their own for true success.
People often acquire and achieve success as a result of many factors. Hard work is among them. However, one needs hard work and luck as Gladwell’s expresses in his work, Outliers. The over all theme in the book is the fact that success for people is often a result of the society contributing from all possible ends (Gladwell, 2012). It is important that as an American aspiring success, one does not only focus on working hard but also takes the chances that come with them. This is in addition to the people having acquired the right levels of education and having the abilities to succeed. Yet, success has no formula. Gladwell argues that successful people cannot attribute their rates and levels of success to personal effort as opposed to the old age narrative by people that success is self-made. Success in life has no ultimate path, one can only succeed by mixing hard work with the right amount of wit and recognition of opportunities for success.
