Subliminal advertising is a big conspiracy theory in today’s society. It argues whether companies purposely insert ads to influence viewers without them even knowing. The is no subliminal advertising because there is no direct proof of companies purposely putting these ads in commercials, videos, etcetera, all of the reported advertisements were reported by paranoid parents and it’s all about peoples perspective of the image or advertisement. There are many more Disney movies with subliminal ads but these are just a few. In each of these movies there is at least one subliminal ad and in one or two there are two subliminal ads. In the lion king there is a supposed subliminal ad on the cover. The cover is an image of Simba’s face, it was depicted to be nice and innocent but a couple of parents saw otherwise. Parents claimed that there is an image of a naked woman wearing a thong. You honestly have to look deeply into the picture to even notice anything at all so these parents might have just been looking to get attention or money even. In the movie Aladdin there is not really a subliminal ad but a message. In a scene where Jazmin’s tiger is trying to attack Aladdin and he is supposed to be saying “Come on good kitty…take off and go” when parents have complained that it says “good teenagers take off and go”. Parents are really the only people reporting these subliminal ads, and if it is meant to be brainwashing children it is obviously not working if these children repeatedly watch these movies and have never caught these ads. Again in the lion King there is yet another subliminal ad. This subliminal ad shows and image of Simba collapsed on a hill, and yet again parents noticed that the dust that appears in the sky spells out the word “sex”. For some odd reason the children, who the images are supposed to be affecting, are not noticing these images at all. This does mean something. Another Disney movie that parents, not children, caught a subliminal ad in was “The Rescuers”. The movie was made in 1997 that is seven years after the whole subliminal ad conspiracy theory came out and I think it was just people being too paranoid and just letting their minds play tricks on them. Advertisers use the manipulation of language to create claims that suggest something about their products without directly claiming it to be true. Through this method, consumers are attracted to a product because they infer certain things about the product from its claim, even though those things are often not true of the product itself. There are not many laws protecting the consumers, however the Federal Trade Commission designed a few to prevent fraudulent or untruthful claims in advertising.

Sex in advertising has been around for many years now. Ever since the Maidenform fantasy over twenty years ago. Here is a great example of sex in advertising. It showed women in their Maidenform bras and had different schemes to each one. Maidenform were showing that if they wore this bra and look sexy they could be successful in their jobs and get out of the house. Basically these ads made women feel sexy, and more confident about their bodies. Quit being just a housewife, which many of them were back then. It was now ?The Maidenform Women. The power of subliminal advertising in effecting consumers is still unproven. The concept of subliminal advertising is based on a "threshold". "This [is] thought to be a fixed point below which awareness does not extend." (Sutherland: p.30) If a word is flashed on a television screen for 50 milliseconds a person would not be conscious of it. If the time of the exposure is increased the word crosses the threshold and a person becomes consciously aware of the word. This process varies within the same person from day to day. For example, if a person is hungry while watching television, advertisements of food will be noticed more than if that same person just ate. Sometimes we are more alert than at other times. The effects of being tired, using drugs or alcohol can also vary when a stimulus is registered.
Subliminal advertisement has been around long before the 21st century. Subliminal messages are said to be “below the threshold of conscious perception” (Credo Reference, 2011). It was first pioneered by Dr. James Vicary, in the 19th century, when he conducted an experiment that subliminally engaged the viewers to “eat popcorn” and “drink Coca-Cola” while in the movie theatre (Broyles, 2006). The experiment attempted to prove that subliminal messages are a technique that is effective. In his studies, Vicary reported that the experiment was successful. Vicary then went on to claim that this trail boosted coke sales by 56% and popcorn sales by 18%. For this reason, she noticed that the sales increased even though the message was only up there for less than a second, your brain still noticed it. The marketing of cartoons has become overpowering in the United States and so has the subliminal messaging. The marketing is targeted toward the children to cause them to want to view the cartoons on a regular basis, but the subliminal messaging is for the adults’ to target them into enjoying the “cartoons”. This is unfortunate because children watch the cartoons on the television and they see material that is not appropriate for their age group.
