Introduction
Civil engineering deals with the things built around us and the environment. It causes the lives of people to be made easier and comfortable. Civil engineers also solve problems that are presented to them. Many people would think that civil engineering is only related to structures and bridges, but there is a wider discipline to it, some which are less known to people.

List out some of the sub-disciplines of civil engineering.
Environmental Engineering
Environmental engineering deals with the treatment of chemical and biological waste, the purification of water and air, and the remediation of contaminated sites, due to prior waste disposal or accidental contamination.
Geotechnical Engineering

Engineers in this field also develop, process and test materials by combining two or more materials to see if they can improve the characteristics of the material to suit specific needs. They need to know the fundamental properties and characteristics of materials, so that they can know how to change and improve the properties. Offshore Engineering
Offshore Engineering is a discipline that deals with the design and building of structures that are to be situated stationary in the ocean environment. Structures built in the ocean environment are usually for oil and gas. Installing platforms, laying pipelines and transportation of fuels are involved in this field. Offshore engineers also conduct surveys and tests to find worthwhile reserves of oil and gas.
Structural Engineering
Structural Engineering is a discipline where strength of structures is designed and analyzed to withstand the horizontal and vertical loading. Analysis of structures is done by determining the forces of each element. Design is the is the configuration of elements in a structure to resist forces that are already known. Overall, structural engineering is to make sure that a structure is strong against the vertical and horizontal forces where the structure …show more content…

Some areas water resource engineers touch are water treatment facilities, underground wells and natural springs.
Purpose
The purpose of each discipline mentioned above will be discussed below.
Environmental Engineer
Among the topics covered by environmental engineering are pollutant transport, water purification, waste water treatment, air pollution, solid waste treatment and hazardous waste management. Environmental engineers are involved with pollution reduction, green engineering, and industrial ecology. Environmental engineering also deals with the gathering of information on the environmental consequences of proposed actions and the assessment of effects of proposed actions for the purpose of assisting society and policy makers in the decision-making process.
Geotechnical Engineering
In this area of civil engineering, geotechnical engineers will perform a site investigation where the condition of the soil is studied before a structure is built. They extract soil samples and run tests on the soil to determine the properties and strength of the soil. After the properties and strength of soil is known, the design of the structure can be
