First, a calorimeter was constructed with three standard styrofoam cups. One cup was stacked within the second for insulation, while the third cup was cut in half to be used as a lid. The lid was made to increase accuracy when recording the temperature. The temperature probe hooked up to Logger Pro software poked a hole in the top of the calorimeter by applied force with the end of the probe through the Styrofoam. Meanwhile, 40mL of deionized water were measured out in two clean 50 mL graduated cylinders, and poured into 100 mL beakers. The beakers and graduated cylinders were cleaned with deionized water to avoid contamination that may cause error. One of the beakers was placed onto a hot plate, which was used to heat the water in the beaker. The other beaker rested at room temperature. Once heated and at room temperature, the initial temperature was measured with the probe. Next, the two 40 mL of deionized water were poured into the calorimeter, quickly sealed with the lid, and the temperature probe emerged through the top of the calorimeter into the water to measure the temperature so the calorimeter constant would be determined. Wrangham has made a concentrated effort to prove that humans have evolved particular adaptations, like bipedalism, due to the introduction of cooked foods into their diet. In his book, he is legitimately arguing that humans are the way they are because early on in human evolution, early man discovered fire, discovered the joys of cooked foods, and developed all sorts of fascinating traits still being utilized today.

The Great Chicago Fire occurred during October 8th and 9th of 1871. The weeks leading up to this disaster were spent with an extremely watchful eye on the city due to the lack of rain. So, one spark or one small fire could start an extremely large fire because of how much wood had been used to build the city. There were even warnings given in form of a building inspection department idea that would inform the city that the buildings were “shoddily constructed firetraps”, according to the Tribune at the time. But there is good news, firefighters have contained 25% of the Thomas fire. Also the Santa Ana winds have decreased to 15-25 miles per hour so the fires will not spread as fast. There are 6 fires including the Thomas fire together they are larger than the nation of Singapore or larger than New York City and Boston combined. They have destroyed more than 1000 buildings combined. One of the fires called the Skirball fire has consumed 400 acres and destroyed 6 houses. It has also damaged 12 houses. But luckily it is 85% contained. There are also new fires that are becoming deadly called the Lilac and Liberty fires.
1) What are some of the fire anomalies an arson investigator will look for during an investigation? A fire investigator will first ensure that the fire did not have an accidental cause, by searching for clues like faulty wiring, cigarette smoking and overheated electric motors. Then the investigator will begin an extensive on-site investigation by first looking for containers that are capable of holding an accelerant, as well as an ignition device such as a candle. The investigator will also be looking for irregularly shaped patterns on the floor, which could be caused by the accelerant. Finally, the accelerant will search for signs of breaking and entering and theft.
