In today's society, students are so overloaded with unnecessary classes that they are deprived of a better future. Students drag themselves through school like robots, waiting for the programming to properly function in the world. However, not every student is destined to be a scientist or a mathematician; some are meant to be make-up artists, or thespians. In the school system every gift deserves to thrive. 150 years ago the world contrasts today’s society directly, from slavery, and many other laws, to the changes in fashion and music throughout the decades. Society suffers from educational ineptitude. If a doctor gave every patient the same medication, it would only benefit a few lucky patients, it is so obvious that the same medications would not work for everyone, when learning is the exact same thing, but much less understood. In classrooms students are given four daily pills that have varying side effects, a blue one for english, a grey one for history, a green one for science, and a black one for mathematics. To some it seems logical to give everyone pills, but if some of the patients were healthy, or need shots instead of pills, these would never help them. The people blindly leading the school systems through into these issues have simply encouraged these terrible teaching methods when instead they should be encouraging students to “[speak] up for free thought[.]” (“Mandatory Diversity Courses Are Cheapening the Liberal Arts Curriculum” paragraph 8) The terrible teaching that the students have to endure often leads to an even worse evil, standardized tests. If school was not ripping individuality from each and every student previously, these tests ripped off the bandaid. Every student is reduced to a number, a number that could not fully reflect how smart they are, but a number that has so much weight to it everyone sees it as the end all, be all. The stress of these standardized tests have become nothing but a very large burden, even Frederick J. Kelly, the creator of standardized tests agrees how terrible they are. He once said,”Standardizes tests are too crude to be used, and should be abandoned.” When even the inventor of such awful tests, agrees publically that they are awful, the school system is just blind by continuing to use them and be so reliant on the test scores. Students dread the time of the year when they stop with their course material and begin to prepare for test. Everyone is in agreement that some type of revolution is needed when it comes to education; eliminating standardized test will aid the reform. The need for standardized testing has proven to be ineffective and outdated; some leading educationalist also believe this because the tests do not measure a student’s true potential. This will save money, stop labeling, and alleviate stress in students and teachers.
Standardized tests have been used to see how much a child has learned over a certain period of time. These tests have been a highly debated issue with many parents and just people in general. In the article “Opting out of standardized tests? Wrong answer,” the author Michelle Rhee argues that people should not be trying to opt out of standardized tests because it allows the country to see how much a child has learned and the things they need to improve. On the other hand, in the article “Everything You’ve Heard About Failing Schools Is Wrong,” the author Kristina Rizga argues that standardized tests are not an efficient way to measure a student’s intelligence.
We live in a society where we are surrounded by people telling us that school/education and being educated is the only way to succeed. However, the school system is not up to the standards we want it to uphold. There are three issues we discuss the most which are the government, the student, and the teacher. In John Taylor Gatto 's essay “Against School”, we see the inside perspective of the educational system from the view of a teacher. In “I Just Wanna Be Average”, an essay written by Mike Rose, we hear a student 's experience of being in a vocational class in the lower level class in the educational system when he was supposed to be in the higher class.
Although there have been legitimate arguments supporting the benefits of standardized testing, such as their ability to successfully measure students’ proficiency, in recent years there have been concerns and disadvantages regarding how their misuse poses a serious threat to the American education system. Despite the belief that standardized tests should be used to measure students’ proficiency, there are more reasons outweighing this statement regarding why they shouldn’t be used for this purpose. Not only is this a particular issue with standardized testing, but the tests are becoming more high stakes and are being used unfairly to determine things such as graduation, or placement in a school, resulting in a significant amount of stress and anxiety in students. Testing corporations are also profiting from the design of these standardized tests, while standardized testing is also forcing teachers to all teach the same thing, leading to a lack of creativity in the students. Aside from these arguments, standardized tests have been found to be becoming flawed and have poor design.
The ability for all children from varying walks of life to receive a well-rounded education in America has become nothing more than a myth. In excerpt “The Essentials of a Good Education”, Diane Ravitch argues the government’s fanatical obsession with data based on test scores has ruined the education system across the country (107). In their eyes, students have faded from their eyes as individual hopefully, creative and full of spirit, and have become statistics on a data sheet, percentages on a pie chart, and numbers calculated to show the intelligence they have from filling out bubbles in a booklet. In order for schools to be able to provide a liberal education, they need the proper funding, which comes from the testing.

Parents and advocates of education can all agree that they want their students to be in the best hands possible in regards to education. They want the best teachers, staffs, and schools to ensure their student’s success. By looking at the score results from standardized testing, teachers can evaluate effectively they are doing their job. On the other side, a proponent for eliminating standardized testing would argue that not all students care passionately about their education and will likely not perform to expectations on the test. However, receiving the numerical data back, teachers can construe the student’s performances and eliminate the outliers of the negligent kids. Teachers can then look at the individual scores and assign those outliers to get the help they need in school. This helps every student getting an equal chance at education. Overall, taking a practice standardized test can let a teacher look at individual questions and scores and interpret what they need to spend more time on teaching. A school also can reap the benefits from standard testing to ensure they are providing the best possible education they can. The school can look at the average scores from a group and hold the teacher accountable for the student’s results on the test. The school can then determine the best course of action to pursuit regarding the teacher’s career at the school. Standardized testing is not the best way to measure how well a teacher teaches or how much a student has learned. Schools throughout the United States put their main focus on standardized tests; these examinations put too much pressure on the teachers and students and cause traumatizing events. Standardized testing puts strain on teachers and students causing unhealthy occurrences, Common Core is thrown at teachers with no teaching on how to teach the new way which dampers testing scores for all students, and the American College Test determines whether a child gets into college or not based on what they have learned during high school. Standardized tests are disagreeable; tests should not determine ranking of people.
Education remains a cornerstone for society as it has for decades. Technology advances, the economy fluctuates, and politics change, but education remains, not only important but imperative for personal and social growth. Standardized testing is not an effective way to test the skills and abilities of today’s students. Standardized tests do not reveal what a student actually understands and learns, but instead only prove how well a student can do on a generic test. Schools have an obligation to prepare students for life, and with the power standardized tests have today, students are being cheated out of a proper, valuable education and forced to prepare and improve their test skills. Too much time, energy, and pressure to succeed are being devoted to standardized tests. Standardized testing, as it is being used presently, is a flawed way of testing the skills of today’s students.
A larger issue that has been going on is that kids haven’t been paying attention in school and have been thinking about what the would do after school. Also, when students get access to a computer or electronic at school, they just play games. The teacher doesn’t even monitor what they are doing and they do nothing about it even though they know it’s happening. School is a place for learning, not playing games.

I guarantee you that.” This quote by Michelle Obama illustrates the idea that standardized testing should not have such a large influence on education in America. However, a majority of people are under the impression that standardized tests are an accurate method to measure a person's intellectual ability. I believe that standardized tests have developed into a very critical part of the American education system that is hindering the growth of students and teachers instead of providing a tool that can accurately measure knowledge.
We all know that kids say the ‘darndest’ things and with that, teachers today can be at the mercy of students and their words. Teachers need to protect themselves from false allegations of any misconduct from children. I think being in the room with several children will help protect you from those allegations. If one child falsely accuses you, those other students will hopefully have your back and tell the truth.
