As a member of the second cohort of the Student Teacher Residency overall the experience was an awesome opportunity. While working on my undergrad through MSUD I was also working on completing my CLDE endorsement and student teaching at the same time. This was tiresome at times meeting for entire days in the middle of a teaching week every week instead of teaching. The hardest part was the fact that in my cohort all but two others were elementary school level and not secondary level. Sue was great about trying to make it more relevant for the secondary students but most resources we were provided for the first half of the year were not useful in our classroom. I have incorporated most of what I have learned. Even though sometimes I fail to link it to a specific persons research as in to why I do it. My class is set up to embrace conversation by using group work as the primary source of student guided education. My student’s various cultures are represented in the classroom. The center of culture in my room is a world flag that is surrounded by pictures of my students and quotes that they have produced. Many quotes are in their native language. Overall, I felt very prepared to teach in a culturally and linguistically diverse populations of students. I sought out a job in a pathway school to really get to utilize what I had learned.
As I stated before one of the biggest drawbacks to receiving my initial licensure and my endorsement at the same time was the amount of time spent in class and working on class projects instead of spending that time focused on my students. Even though most of the projects we did could be implemented into our classes often times we were not given enough time to prepare to do it in the most efficient way. Many things have been shared in this classroom environment. Issues have been studied that have caught the attention of the class and made them consider things that perhaps were not contemplated before. Over the past semester, one series of lessons have stood out to me more than any other. That particular set of lessons revolved around the issue of racism.

The town and the school reminded me immensely of my hometown and, I felt an immediate connection with the students from the community. Consequently, I recognized what it means to be a teacher throughout those five days when taught the students of the community. Immediately, on Monday we discovered that some of the lessons we had planned before the trip were not the best for the students, therefore, we needed to create modifications on the spot, I grasped that an outstanding teacher needs to be flexible and adapt in order to meet the needs of the students in the classroom. For that reason, we would modify our lessons as the day went since we would teach Kinder through 5th grade all on the same day, it was a daunting task, but in retrospect, I feel a considerable superior confidence with my abilities as an educator. Many teachers have taught me their subjects exceptionally well, which is very important as I prepare for my future. They have also taught me patience and how to behave appropriately. Over the past years, my religion teachers have made an impact on me. From Mr. Brazil and Mrs. Joyce to Mrs. Gates and Rouleau, I have learned a lot about my Catholic faith. They have educated me about how to live a life following Christ and the Ten Commandments.
I believe in culturally responsive teaching by embracing multiple perspectives and creating educational opportunities to empower students by drawing from their individual, cultural, and community identities.
At each point in my life, I had fabulous teachers that helped open my mind to the bigger world outside. But the person who taught me the most was my mother.
I have learned several valuable things from this project experience. First, it’s okay to not know how to do something right away. Ask, observe and experiment. Doing so will greatly enhance my ability to do it correctly and continue to learn. Second, I learned that this can be an experience in frustration if I always try to not make waves. Sometimes waves need to be made to better the project. And third, watch for similar frustrations with my students and intervene before it gets too serious.
All of my Towslee teachers were some of the best that I have ever had. This being said, out of all of them, one of the most influential teachers I had was Miss Boyer (now Mrs. Mellis). I remember that I had her for her first year teaching – it was so much fun. It was easy to see that she loved her job. I hope to be as enthusiastic of a teacher as her. being young at the time (it was second grade), I was still really impressionable and her teaching methods, along with the positive experiences that I had in her class, helped to mold my strong work ethic and yearning to gain more knowledge. Throughout my life inside of school, I never really had a favorite teacher. But I did have some that left a positive influence in my life. In my second grade class I had a teacher that definitely left a positive influence. She always helped or picked kids up.
My Math Teacher, Mrs. Ladd. When thinking back and remembering all of the teachers that I have had in the past, there is one in particular that comes to mind. Her name was Mrs. Ladd. She taught math at the junior high school.
My cooperating teacher has been employed in the field of education for 19 plus years. She has been in her current position as a Pre-Kindergarten teacher at the Lighthouse Learning Center for 12 years. Observing a teacher who has so many years of experience in the classroom is very beneficial. She shared with me this week her teaching philosophy that has evolved from her many years in the classroom. The components of her philosophy include a focus on people, strategies, and tools.
This class presented many real world challenges, the biggest of which was the overlapping project deadlines. At one point in the term, I was working on a group project and two other independent projects. All projects were due by the end of term, but due to their complexities, some would need more time than others.
My mentor teacher also half way through went through some personal health problems that made her have to sit a lot, this only meant that while students were working on their classroom work that I was able to walk around and observe students as well as answer questions that they have. It was a great learning opportunity for me because it really allowed me to jump in with two feet. This was such a great experience and it shaped me greatly as a future
