I am writing to strongly recommend Tiffany Richards, who is a Graduate Student in the Program of Neuroscience at Stony Brook University, for the Congressional Black Caucus (CBC) Spouses Education Scholarship. Tiffany has worked in my lab since Summer 2016 and she is undoubtedly one of the most intelligent and hardworking Master students I have witnessed at our University. My laboratory studies the behavioral, electrophysiological and neuroanatomical aspects of spinal cord injury – with the overall objective to recover motor and sensory function after paralysis in rodents.
Tiffany grabbed my attention in the lab from the very onset – after initially recruiting Tiffany to my lab as a Masters student, I was fascinated by her commitment to research in the laboratory. She started shadowing my post-doc and research assistants in the lab, learned a variety of unique lab procedures, routinely attended lab meetings and actively participated in more than just one project. Because of her sincerity and enthusiasm for any task she undertakes, Tiffany embarked on her own research project. Tiffany ranks among the top 1% of all students I have encountered in my career and has my highest recommendation for a graduate Scholarship from the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation. Tiffany is not only deserving of this Scholarship; but this Award in turn, will greatly bolster her current and future research efforts and allow her to pursue Science for a professional career. My name is Kaha Salad and I am appealing my Satisfactory Academic Progress suspension. Autumn semester of 2013 was a difficult time for me, I was going through many different changes in my life and I just didn’t know how to adapt. I experienced a personal event in the summer of 2013 that made my life change forever. My Grandmother Khadija died, she was the light of my family’s lives. My mother was immensely affected by her death, she went into a state of depression and she then stopped working. I took it upon myself to help out my grieving mother and get a job to help pay with the bills that was piling up. I began working
Rosalyn Sussman Yalow graduated Hunter College as the first women to graduate in physics (Bauman et. al. 2011). She also led a way for acceptance and understanding of women’s role in science in America (Bauman et. al. 2011). She even inspired Mildred Dresselhous, who was a professor at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and president and officer of many Associations including American Association for the Advancement of Science, to pursue the career she wanted (Bauman et. al. 2011). Rosalyn born to Clara and Simon Sussman in New York City, on July 19, 1921 (Brody 1996). She married Aaron Yalow on June 6, 1943 and had two children named Elanna and Benjamin (Brody 1996). In 1977, Dr. Yalow won the Nobel Prize in medicine and was the second women to ever accept such an award (Brody 1996). She also taught physics in New York until 1950 when the Veterans Administration (during World War II) was interested in exploring and researching radioactivity (Brody 1996). As her life progressed, Dr. Rosalyn Sussman Yalow became an inspiration for young women who want to be recognized and achieve something in their life (Brody 1996). From when she was a child she was fascinated with science and decided to achieve something no women really does. Rosalyn Yalow went to school and started working in the science field, she managed to help the world of radioactivity and radioimmunoassay, how Mrs. Rosalyn impacted the world of science, how Dr. Yalow impacted the lives of other women, and how she never lost her passion for science even in her last years.
What impressed me about this particular scientist was her sheer dedication to her field of study. I mean, she was only getting paid 50 cents an hour to do gruelling mind work. That is just mind boggling to me. Also, it is truly amazing how many awards she won and things she accomplished during her lifetime. Especially since she was working at a time when women were considered a minority. Overall, this was just a truly amazing woman and I am glad I had the opportunity to research about her.

Two treatment types are being studied for spinal cord injury: injection of an antagonist of the ATP-sensitive receptor P2X7 and transplantation of human embryonic stem cell derived oligodendrocyte progenitor cells. In the spinal cord, ATP can act as an excitatory neurotransmitter (Domercq et al,. 2009). ATP is released in excess for six hours after the initial damage. Most tissue damage happens after the main injury occurs, so finding a treatment that will slow the secondary injury down is a main interest for clinical treatment studies. Injecting a P2X7 antagonist that is sensitive to ATP into the region of the spinal cord that has been damaged has been found to slow down secondary injury (Peng et al., 2009). Also, demyelination of neurons can be found after spinal cord injury. Transplanting human embryonic stem cell derived oligodendrocyte progenitor cells into the damaged tissue has shown to help with remyelinating the neurons. Th...

I hope to make some substantial progress on my project with Dr. Pellegrini and have presentable data by the end of the program and contribute to the scientific community. I also look forward to networking with fellow SPUR-LABS students and faculty. In my time at UCLA, I have realized that research is all but a solo act. It is a cooperative endeavor, and being in the program will provide a collaborative and supportive environment for me to succeed. Ideally, I would like to have at least one paper published during my undergraduate career. C.S. Lewis once said, “Experience: the most brutal of teachers. But you learn, my God, do you learn.” Such experiences, especially SPUR-LABS will hopefully aid my journey to graduate school and my pursuit of a Ph.D. and work in academia and work alongside of the professors and mentors I have today.

When it comes to working in a stressful environment while maintaining efficient, human, and profession-al conduct, I’m highly competent. In addition, my communication skills are sharp, as is my abil-ity to retain information and remember people. Thanks to my schooling and my keen interest in the industry, my research skills will keep my knowledge of the industry and practices up-to-date. In fact, taking in new material is a joy. The Clinical laboratory science field is vast and ever-changing, something I’m both excited and prepared to deal with. For this reason, I intend to re-main on top of advances in the field.
As a transfer junior attending the University of Illinois at Urbana – Champaign, I am more than excited to seek for and to be a part of the research team. All the classes I had in my previous college, which is Green River College, a two-year college located in Washington, are non-research based classes, and there were no research opportunities available for students; therefore, I cannot stand to let myself blend into research coursework at the University of Illinois. I found the Undergraduate Research Apprentice Program, and I believe this would be an excellent opportunity for me to start building my research experiences at the University. By looking through the graduate mentors’ descriptions, I am amazed by all the works they have made. All of them are fascinating and intriguing to me. Nevertheless, I am drawn to these three topics the most; they consecutively are Rekha Balachandran’s, Kim Drager’s and Aseel Addawood’s.
