The article titled 'Teaching Responsibility'; deals with the issue of student preparedness after high school. The article brings up the recent case of Jonathan Govias who is suing his private high school stating that the school did not prepare him for university. The article goes on to give two examples, one in Virginia and one in Ontario of how these types of problems are being dealt with. The editor agrees s that the school system should be held more responsible for its graduates, but makes it clear that lawyers only complicate matters. I believe that Jonathan Govias' case should be heard in a court of law due to the fact that schools have a certain responsibility and if it is not met then something needs to be done about it. I am in total disagreement with the Ontario's school plan to get rid of this problem and am a total fan of the Virginia pilot project, because unlike the Ontario plan they are actually looking to help the students and not their own pockets.
After dropping out of his first year engineering program at the university of Alberta, Jonathan Govias decided to sue his alma mater for a total of $140,000 claiming that the school failed to fully prepare him for what university had in store for him. Jonathan attended a private school, and as we all know private schools charge a large amount of money in order to provide a better education for its students. That is why parents enroll their children in private schools. Jonathan after graduating got accepted in the engineering program, which is a hard program to get into since a high average is necessary. Private education costs money, therefore making it a business that provides services and like any other business should be held responsible if their services fail, or does not meet the standard that the school promises to meet. I believe that the school is very much responsible for Jonathan's post secondary education. Private schools take pride in the fact that they can provide a better education than public schools and that they prepare their students with the tools they need to survive in the university world. It is also important to note that this case has not yet been decided in favor of Jonathan and that Jonathan should be given a chance to prove himself. The fact that this action against the private school is taking place shows that Jonathan has just cause for his decision to take his case before the judge.
Robert Duffley, a high school senior at Trinity High School, had withdrawn from his sophomore year early in the first semester after falling ill. Anticipating problems with his eligibility to participate in high-school sports during his senior year under certain NHIAA rules, Duffley’s principal sought a ruling from the NHIAA granting such eligibility. The NHIAA decided to allow Duffley to participate only during the first semester of his senior year. No reason was given for denying Duffley eligibility for the second semester. After unsuccessful appeals to the NHIAA executive council, Duffley filed a petition in the Superior Court, seeking equitable and injunctive relief. Duffley alleged "violation of his due process rights” and that the defendant had acted “arbitrarily and capriciously” in arriving at its decision, which was “unreasonable and unlawful."

Shame punishments should be implemented in the Justice system. Because we waste so many tax dollars for locking up small-time offenders, we should use shame to save money and make the system more helpful for those who are in it. Punishing by shame can be effective through many forms, such as, community service or participating in an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting to overcome drinking problems. Shame makes the punishment more personal to the offender and creates a solution that is best for society. If a graffiti painter had to clean up all of the graffiti in the city, he would be sick of it. Shame is a way we could solve the problem in the Justice system.
Public shaming is much more than just a punishment for people, they either learn nothing from it or hate themselves because if it. It should not be considered appropriate under any circumstances. A crime is a crime no matter how big or how small, people should do the time for what they did. They should not be placed in public and made a fool of. They should be placed somewhere where they can learn from their mistakes and get the help they need to better themselves as a human being.
On June 24, 2009, The Ontario Ministry of Education introduced Policy/Program Memorandum (PPM) No. 119, titled Developing and Implementing Equity and Inclusive Education Policies in Ontario Schools. Throughout this paper I am going to take a critical look at this policy using a combination of policy analysis approaches. Through my analysis I am hoping to examine, both the intended and unintended effects that may or might have resulted from the introduction and implementation of PPM 119. When I read this document when it first came out, I was very excited about the prospects of what it might mean to education in Ontario. The combination of time and the knowledge that I have gained through this course have allowed me to reflect upon my initial thoughts about PPM 119. Understanding the identified issue being addressed by the policy is the first step, examining how this policy fits into the historical / political context of policy development in the province of Ontario, recognizing the how this educational policy impacts Canada on the global stage, and looking at how this policy was developed and introduced to the public.
Determining college readiness is an essential part in determining who will qualify as a good candidate for admission into a college or a university. Deviance is a title that insinuates the violation of social norms in society. This can be described as adjacent to criminal and improper behaviour imposed by the people who break the social norms of a society. Thus, becoming subjective to a label of 'deviant'. Deviants often have punishment bestowed upon them by authoritive figures such as the enforcers of law. There are many universal types of deviance throughout societys over the world such as alcoholism, addiction, mental illness and homosexuality. All of these may be a result of biological and social constructionist theories of deviance, this essay will define the opposing differences and the relation of the two in this essay. Both hold contributing factors to the construction of deviance in society, but are both highly conflicting theories.
Public Shaming is defined as a judicial punishment imposed on a convicted criminal that includes humiliation in public instead of imprisonment. In Nathaniel Hawthorne 's novel The Scarlet Letter, the Puritans use public humiliation to punish those for their sins. Public humiliation may seem like the best punishment; however, in the novel Dimmesdale seems to suffer more from his own mind than Hester does by being put into public humiliation. Today, judges are still using public shaming as punishment for moderate and intense crimes. Judges believe that public humiliation can cause a greater change in a person than just sending them to jail; however, this is not a fact. Public humiliation should not still be used as a form of punishment for crime.
There is an old adage that claims it is better to be safe than sorry. Most people living on planet Earth would agree. The art of preparation is a skill every old person wants the youth of America to possess. Business leaders want their employees to be better prepared. Simple everyday people want to be ready for all kinds of disasters that life may have in store for them. Someone who was trying to be wise once said, ¡°Dig the well before you are thirsty¡±. This person was obviously relatively smart. Preparation is an essential tool for making life a more positive experience.
I am applying to Seoul National University to continue the development of my critical learning skills and to broaden my knowledge base. I feel I am now ready to complete a degree, and understand what is required to function successfully in our environment. I realize that to advance from the world of undergraduate college curriculum to that of an atmosphere of higher education in graduate training, takes much of a prospective graduate student??s time and effort.
