I believe the purpose of student council is to provide opportunities to extraordinary students to develop leadership skills. The development of leadership skills is not limited to only school activities and service projects, but it also includes the small conversations and collaborations that go into creating a success that student council can achieve. A primary strength is my attention to detail. After years of losing points to silly mistakes such as forgetting the smallest of details, I learned to focus my attention and skills towards small details. Some students still choose to do work and study, but they isolate themselves from others which leads to a lack or development in communication and collaboration skills. While River Bluff has succeeded in creating an environment that encourages the development of healthy relationship for socializing and work, I believe the River Bluff need to address those who don't take advantage. I believe the best way to solve this issue is to advertise and illustrate the benefits that River Bluff can create to individual students. Moreover, I think that we should expand upon Habits of Scholarship. Instead of just reminiscing about Habits of Scholarship with teachers repeating the same words continuously, we should try to create and provide actual examples that shows fellow students who isolate themselves that they are preventing their personal growth mindset by declining valuable opportunities. I frequently push myself, however, I tend to push myself too far. As a result, I put myself in situations where I am not necessarily in the best position or stance for me and I tend not to realize it until I come across the actual problem. The only time to I do realize my error is when I face the consequence or when someone helps me identify it. This issue won't prevent me from fulfilling my role, but it can make my role harder for me to play. Ralph Waldo Emerson, A well known author , wrote a quote stating " Unless you try to do something beyond what you have mastered , you will never grow ". This statement speaks true volume because you are not challenging yourself to improve the skill sets that you have and your are limiting yourself to what you can actually achieve. His quote should be used as an inspirational guideline to help encourage others to go beyond what they have already accomplished. Getting involved in certain activities or even trying something new can allow people to explore their potential in ways they would have never done prior. In order for someone to challenge themselves they should figure out new ways to improve their overall demeanor.
In the novel, What the Best College Students Do written by Ken Bain, we learn about how college student goes through rough times in their college life. The author brings up a common issue that occurs in the academic life of college students. It is the need of having self confidence and self esteem. Bain believes that if a student loves and admires themselves it will give the student a better advantage of having a well-being lifestyle than all their other peers that are having difficulties. Many college students focus mainly on their grades other than the knowledges that they are learning in class. The idea of having perfect grades in all the subjects are limiting the students from approaching activities that they might be interested.
From my experiences in high school, I know the kind of academic environment I want for my college experience. The English Honor Society appeals to me in many ways due to the presented opportunity of meeting new people, helping others while advancing my skills in the English language, and reviewing the subject of English Language Arts altogether. Finally, leadership is an equally important characteristic I display. As a class officer for the past two years, my job is to guide and encourage the class to participate in projects and events. Even though many were hesitant, I showed leadership and encouraged participation. I also am a possible candidate for an officer position in Student Council. I have been selected for this position based on my strong leadership abilities, such as bringing forth ideas, compromising for projects, and speaking up when others will not.
“Who’s going to step up?”. “Who’s going to change this?”. People ask these questions everyday. I realize that I have never truly thought about the defining characteristics of a leader. I was given a list of qualities and upon reading it, I proudly realized that I demonstrate leadership. But the important consideration should not be how I successfully match this definition, but instead why I do it. I was elected treasurer for the class of 2016, a student body elected official, and hold that position of responsibility by attending meetings weekly, promoting school activities (such as homecoming), and participating in student council planning and events as much as possible. I wanted to become treasurer because I wanted a say in decisions that impacted our class. I wanted to be recognized as an individual that my peers could come to with questions and concerns.
The National Junior Honor Society is a very respected and prestigious organization that I would be glad to be a part of. The students involved exemplify scholarship, leadership, service, character, and knowledge. All of which are traits that are incredibly important in my own life. I feel that each student with the privilege to commit to this foundation should devote some time and effort to those qualities.
These are the reasons why I personally exemplify the traits of someone who shows leadership. This is why I lack in the area of the scholarship pillar. For example, my first and biggest issue is that I fail to get my homework done and turned in on its due date. There are many ways to grow and become better at completing and turning in homework on its due date.
Throughout everyday tasks in the classroom, or outside of school, I step up and lead those who need to be led. I constantly find new opportunities to lead others and help the situation any way I can. Every summer the band has a marching band camp for a week straight that we must all attend. Being an experienced band member, I step up and assist all underclassmen and show then where to go and what they need to be doing. Instead of getting frustrated when giving the freshman directions, I am calm and collect and walk them step by step until they understand, something most leaders would not have time or patience for. With many plans to help others and lead within my community, I believe that I have what it takes to be a strong, and powerful leader for the National Honor Society.
My goal is to implement a similar program at the high school level where students are exposed to this level of support and companionship; all united in the same goal of helping each other succeed. It is also essential for students to witness what college is like before stepping inside for the first day of class. To see what college is like, and to experiment the environment goes a long way for students who are new to the experience. I found that some of the examples did not fit but in general I could relate to this as a strength theme. While I find myself sometimes having trouble focusing and waiting until a deadline is right in front of me, I do make sure to get things done. I almost always follow through and on the off chance I cannot, I make sure to make it up to that person one way or another. In these cases, I cannot apologize enough for my mistake and feel terrible about letting them down and not being able to follow through. It is my responsibility to own up to my actions and apologize for failures. Morals and ethics are a big part of this. If I find that something is going on that I cannot morally agree with, I will not support it. I believe in doing what is right at all times in effort to be responsible and a good asset to any team I’m on. Growing up, I had trouble saying no as I wanted to be involved in everything and take care of every task that came my way. I remember my dad telling me that I could be the person who tries all trades but masters none. While I still find myself volunteering for many things, I have learned to double check that I can take on a task or activity and do the best I can without causing trouble with my current involvements. I try to stay responsible by making sure that I don’t overdo it. Responsibility will definitely help me in the future as employers always look to make sure that employees are following guidelines and following through with what they say they will do. For their entire lives, these students have been motivated by an outside source to complete their work. Whether it was a teacher, parent, or tutor, students were constantly reminded of the importance of completing their assignments. As college students, however, there is a need for a greater sense of self-motivation. These students have not yet developed the maturity necessary to thrive in an independent learning environment. Many students go into college without the discipline and determination needed in order to succeed. These students struggle throughout their college beginnings and become discouraged at their poor performance compared to their previous high school successes. Other times, students are caught up in the “college experience,” and begin to lose motivation. College’s social aspect is a lifelong memory.
