Most of us only hear of the general categories, like doctors, scientists, teachers and athletes. As a result, we usually don't realize those occupations go into more depth than that. For instance, has anyone here ever hear of a haberdasher(yes I got that from Neville)? Specifically, a haberdasher is a dealer in men's clothing and accessories. My goal is to open the eyes of a younger audience to a variety of uncommon and interesting professions. This way, we can prepare and think ahead about the courses we'd like to pursue in High School. We can do this by contacting successful Pocono Mountain Alumni and asking them educate us about their job. They can come to either give a speech or bring interactive projects provided by their employer.Giving students a hands on learning experience will arouse new interest in different jobs. I thought we could put limits for anyone interested in signing up for these assemblies, like a minimum grade average or a minimum required attendance. This way we can encourage students to improve these areas in order to attend.They would take place early in the morning during homeroom to also discourage tardiness. Each assembly will either focus on a vague job category or a specific job. We could have these assemblies however often is seen fit or whenever our alumnus are available, whether that be once a month, once a week, or every other
In America, voting for the President is a privilege and a lie. Many Americans think when they go to the polls in November, they are voting for the President of the United States; but really, they are voting for a group of electors who have pledged to support a nominee for the President. The Founding Fathers were concerned that presidents would always come from a populous state and wondered whether the public would have the knowledge of various candidates necessary to make a wise selection. They did not have access to technology like the internet or smart phones as we do. In the United States we are all guaranteed one vote per person. Everyone has an equal voice in electing the people that serve in the government. Every four years during the month of November citizens of America go to the polls to vote for a president and vice-president of the United States. Am I right? Not really. They actually vote for electors that then vote for our president. It makes me wonder, "Are we a democracy?" Having the Electoral College defeats its purpose. I oppose the electoral college for these three reasons, in election 2000 the president that lost the popular vote actually won, everyone's vote doesn't really count, plus the electoral college has disrupted elections fifteen times!

When I found out I qualified to be a candidate for the NJHS, I knew I had to take this chance. This group is made up of people who depict leadership, character, citizenship, academic success, and service and I would love to join. These characteristics wouldn't just be valuable for a candidate to have, but for everyone to have to exceed in life. If I were to be in the National Junior Honor Society, it would give me an opportunity to ameliorate my future and motivate me to do better.

Finally, as a member of the Student Leadership Council, I have developed meaningful relationships with peers, advisors and community leaders, some who share my views and others whose views are utterly different from mine. I have been able to grow tremendously from my association with Students Against Destructive Decisions. Thus, it is my desire to continue volunteering for the Students Against Destructive Decisions Student Leadership Council, even after I graduate from high school, because it has been such a meaningful and rewarding experience. It is my hopes that I will be able to some day facilitate a Students Against Destructive Decisions Program in my community, as there is an urgent need for positive adult mentors.

Approximately 200 years ago, our founding fathers of America began a tedious process of carefully designing and crafting an idea to solve the problem of selecting president. Soon, the idea of citizens indirectly selecting the president soon bloomed into the formation of the initial College of Electors. Although some individuals cherish this firm establishment, I firmly think the Electoral College fails to balance power and politically sustain our nation.
I feel that we should keep the Electoral College but modernize it and make some changes for electing our president. The Electoral Congress is an outdated system that doesn’t always ensure that the citizens of the United State’s voices are heard. The reason the College was invented was because our founding fathers acknowledged that the information regarding the candidates did not travel to the different states quickly enough for them to be kept updated on the candidate's platform. So, they picked members of the Electoral College to stay in Washington, where they could easily be updated on the recent news of each candidate. From there, they would vote with the people of their state’s best interest in mind. Now, today it works in a similar but in a modified way. The votes of Americans are given to the College members for each state and they, in turn, vote for president. The biggest problem is that the members do not have to vote based on who the people chose, thus making it seem that the people's votes don’t even matter. That being said, there are also positive points regarding the Electoral College. For example, the College ensures that each state gets a voice and are kept a crucial part of the election process. Now, the issue is finding a compromise for keeping the Electoral College.

Theater 180 addressed the quest question of how do people understand and engage in community life? Through this class I’ve gained a better understanding of what civic engagement is. At the start of this semester I had very minimal knowledge about civic engagement. As far as I knew civic engagement was just volunteering but nothing much beyond that. With this class I have learned that civic engagement is much more than just volunteer work.
Have you ever been persuaded into voting? Well, you should have your own say on where your opinion goes. Voting is a right that every citizen in America over the age of 18 can do. Many people have become aware of the fact that the number of voters had reached its all time low. But as the newest voting season comes closer, we should still have a voice and the freedom to decide what we do. Which is, take a step against making America a compulsory voting country, because it proves unnecessary and there are other alternatives than mandatory voting.

The concept of citizenship traditionally has two meanings: it both implies legal relationships between a person and a country, thus being close to nationality, and defines a normative ideal of the association with a political community and an active participation in it; while analyzing the attributes of ‘a good citizen’, we mostly deal with the latter. Though it is democracy that enables us to fully exploit the capacities of our citizenship by giving us civil, political and social rights, it itself requires responsible citizens for proper functioning of its institutions. However, more and more people these days prefer to abstain from public life and to pursue private interests, and with the growth of passive citizenship, it is worth asking: what does constitute a good citizen? I believe that a good citizen is a person who never makes a choice between private interests and public activities, but the one whose life is balanced between those two, the one who needs to step outside the close circle to fulfill his life-mission, to realize his potential.
