Students who participate in Athletics benefit in many ways from participating in sports. Whether it makes them a multi-task better, become a leader, or just improve as a person throughout. Athletes are constantly being coached and guided by a person who has been through their shoes and is far more experienced in life than the athlete. Studies show the importance of coaches to athletes “A qualitative analysis of the data revealed that the coaches perceived the enhancement of student athletes’ personal development to be an important part of their role” (Banwell and Kerr). What most people don't know is the amount of effort and hard work that is given off by student athletes. This causes them to get far in life, due to the drive they have in themselves to push themselves to their limits. Student athletes are simply not just focused on their athletic performance, but how they do in school too. “a senior and four-sport athlete at Belding (Mich.) High, is set to graduate No. 1 in her class with a 4.2 GPA and 16 varsity letters—four each in volleyball, basketball, softball and track and eld. But arguably the most impressive number on her résumé is four: the number of dogs she has trained” (Fenwick, Alexandra, and Ted Keith).While being a valedictorian is already as difficult as it gets, being a top athlete at the same time would just be a miracle. This student athlete isn’t just a regular student. She is a prodigy, someone that will be successful in life due to the skills she has earned and learned about while in high school. Through athletes and academics this girl has managed to achieve something very little people have, Even after having the following notable achievements, she also manages to participate in extracurricular activities such as training dogs. The many ways that participating in sports and school at the same benefits student athletes will never be possible by a student that doesn’t participate in athletics. As many people know, parents put their kids in sports at a young age, not for them to get injured or healthy. Rather just so their kids will learn a lot about competing in a sport, the skills they achieve from participating in a sport goes a long way, especially in life. Athletes will always remain to be leaders and not followers, since they have to set the path for themselves for success. Athletes cannot be babied since they have so many things going on, it is very tough for another person to manage their life for them. As a result they have to manage most things by themselves such as managing time. Athletes continue to receive more opportunities to succeed than non student athletes, since there is such a high demand for them in today’s society that craves having high level professional athletes. Most importantly, they will develop more social skills and life skills than a normal student due to the extra curricular activities they participate in. Most student-athletes grow up as very innocent lads bedecked with tremendous talents and become very promising in sports. Thus, they become rays of hope for their families, neighborhoods, and schools yet to be determined. Like the lamb in William Blake’s poem The Lamb, they are fed “by the stream & o’er the mead; gave…clothing of delight, softest clothing, wooly, bright…making all the vales rejoice.” (Smith 24) Then they are exposed to the life of hard work in which only the fittest survives. This makes them ready for the different challenges in the sports scene.
High school sports are approached with clashing opinions. Some of these opinions are positive, and supportive of athletics. “Athleticism, among many activities, offers teens a physical outlet to exert their troubles, anger, emotions, and other feelings” (Chen 1). This can be observed in nearly all of the football players in Friday Night Lights. This can also be noticed in the world today. “Athletics help high school students understand their own abilities and talents” (Chen 1). This piece of evidence is very accurate when describing high school athletes. Sports can make a high school student humble. As can be seen by the preceding information, high school athletics can have a positive impact on a student’s life.

While this is not completely true, sports develop people in many ways still, some people say that “sports make me what I am today.” While it is impossible to prove exactly the way each individual takes in sports, it is seen that overall it has some positive effect. Sports are a tool of development and instead of it being a choice between sports and academics, the real answer is both and that they work together to constantly develop quality generations of people. Though problems exist, the true qualities of sports maintain the role they have in developing young ones.
Because of the unique issues facing student athletes, academic administrators and student affairs professionals are challenged to adequately address these challenges. While there may be existing services on campus to assist all students with success related issues, institutions must also take a closer look at the services that will be the most effective for student athletes. An important element is not only having a conducive learning environment for services, but also staff personnel who understand the complex life of a student athlete. Often in college, athletes will do just enough to get by and not care about what their academic performance means. Unfortunately, especially in some larger schools, preferential treatment for athletes does exist among the faculty. This also gives athletes the advantage at the time, but hurts them in the long run.
Youth sports can be a learning experience or it can be a health risk to the athletes. Youth sports can teach young children the value of hard work and discipline or it can be emotionally and physically damaging. The authors found sports and coaching to be related to development in youths in the following areas: personal and social skills, cognitive skills, goal setting, and initiative (Cronin & Allen 2015). Focusing on the area presented by Cronin & Allen, McFarland, U.S.A. provides examples of these area of development within the team members and within Jim himself. Jim White provided the link to help the cross-country team grow closer and form a community in the team and outside the team. When Thomas, a boy on the cross-country team, expressed to Jim that he will never be better than a farm hand who pick fruits and vegetables and will never be able to leave McFarland. Jim provides a goal for Thomas that if he keeps running he will be able to receive a college scholarship and become a better athlete and person. It will encourage students to try their best to accomplish superior grades. It opens their eyes in a different perspective on behavior as well as stronger scholastic peer relationships. It gives students activities excluding school work, because teenagers generally focus their mind on unacceptable actions. Parents commonly show passion along with appreciation when their child/children play a sport. They get to have a closer relationship and be elaborate with them more often than normal. Frequently, students do not care about their reputation or acknowledge the adults’ opinions on themselves; but in my opinion, playing sports and being mostly involved with their schools presents an improved character while in school and once they graduate. I was once told that “Sports do not build character. They reveal it.” Additionally, self-esteem in high school is hard to come by, occasionally sports help! Sports cause you to interact with other people and uplift you to do better. It presents a sharpened perspective on your schoolwork, career, future, and life altogether. In some cases, playing a sport can benefit you in an enhanced form. Scholarships can be a broad opportunity for valuable players with a good education on their shoulders. As well as, college recruitment can be another option. Money is hard to come by for college and if that seems to be a struggle for a student playing a sport can help tremendously. That
He sprints up and down the court, as sweat pours down his face and on to the hardwood. The player’s legs are in severe pain, and he is out of breath, yet he continues to run, utilizing every last portion of energy that he maintains. He desires to better himself, not necessarily for his own benefit, but for the benefit of his team. He knows that every single member of the team, including himself, must work as hard as they possibly can on the court to reach their potential and achieve success. Organized sports teach athletes some of the most powerful moral values and life lessons that any individual can attain. Despite the opposing opinion that students who take part in organized sports suffer academically due to time deprivation and focus misdirected away from the classroom, involvement in sports teaches young men and women to maintain imperative values, such as hard work, selflessness, and commitment, which ultimately improves student-athletes’ academic performance.
Most obviously, this will help student-athletes, beginning as young kids, all the way through college. Starcher (2015) argues that sport and socialization within it begins to affect children from an early age. Socialization is “the process of social interaction through which children, develop, extend, and modify their conceptions of who they are and how they relate to the social world around them (p. 205.)” Ordinarily, the socialization process begins so early and sport is one of the avenues through which this process is completed, so it is important to study the origin or where the student-athlete identity started to form. Sports programs have been an integral part of all schools. They support the academics of the school and therefore foster success in life. These programs are educational and help produce productive citizenship. They help students experience and build skills that may help them in their future, like interpersonal and time management skills. Education may kindle the light of knowledge, but sports help to maintain the proper physique. Sports are also an important means of entertainment and a use for energy after long hours of study. Sports increase a student’s performance not only in the classroom but also in their life.
